New Nokia Lumia Handsets Coming Our Way?

New Nokia Lumia Handsets Coming Our Way?With Mobile World Congress 2013 kicking off shortly, we are all ready and raring to go, but until then, we do expect a fair number of leaks and surprises head our way. One of the later rumors would involve a quartet of new Nokia Lumia handsets that are in the pipeline, where these were spotted in one of the logs of one ad network that serves up Windows Phone apps. A couple of the models are more or less confirmed, and they are the Lumia 720 and Lumia 520, carrying model numbers RM-885 and RM-814, respectively. After all, these two have been spotted in regulatory paperwork in the past as well.

As for the remaining two handsets, they remain pretty much mysterious, being known as the RM-887 and RM-860. The latter does seem to be a fan of Verizon, and the former could very well be leaning on the back of Verizon’s network as well. Well, whatever the case is, we admit that we are stoked to see just what Nokia has in store for the masses at MWC 2013 next week, how about you?

Nokia Music+ Officially Launched In The UK

Nokia Music+ Officially Launched In The UK

Nokia has launched its music subscription service in the UK by the name of “Music+” offering the users of Nokia Lumia smartphones to download unlimited music at £3.99 per month. Additional services include the ability to skip as many tracks as you want or simply unlimited track skipping, get access to higher quality track downloading via wifi, so users do not eat up the data package while downloading their favorite tune, and the ability to download lyrics for any songs. The service is available for the lumia app in Windows 8 devices. Web based access to Nokia+ is also planned for the future.

Users who do not wish to sign up for the £3.99 per month service have another option. They can sign up for a free trial of 7 days. Users can enjoy complete functionality for 7 days and test the service.  We are still unsure of when the service will be launched in American. We are however sure that the American audience will not have to pay the equivalent of £3.99 per month; instead it’s going to be $3.99 per month, when the service eventually launches in America.

Analyst: Nokia Tablet Won’t Debut At MWC 2013

Analyst: Nokia Tablet Wont Debut At MWC 2013

A few days ago, we saw a possible leak of a new Nokia tablet at an event the company held in Pakistan which we expected would be revealed at MWC, if such a device even exists. According to market research firm Strategy Anallytics, we could be wrong in thinking MWC would be the place for Nokia to debut their tablet.

In a blog post published earlier today, Strategy Analytics believes Nokia will only focus on its line of Lumia smartphones at this year’s MWC as channel checks made by its Tablet & Touchscreen Strategies service believes Nokia’s strategy at the show will be “smartphone first.”

Considering there are only eight Nokia Lumia devices currently available globally, Strategy Analytics makes a fair point Nokia may be choosing to focus on its smartphones this year. But if the previous tablet leak is any indication, maybe we’ll hear more about Nokia’s possible upcoming tablet some time after MWC.

Nokia Lumia 1000 Listed On China Mobile, Could Be The Lumia EOS/Catwalk

Nokia Lumia 1000 Listed On China Mobile, Could Be The Lumia EOS/CatwalkEarly in the year, we talked about how there is the possibility of the Nokia Catwalk taking on the mantle of the Lumia 920 as the Finnish company’s flagship device, but here we are with word that China Mobile has just listed the unseen and unheard of Nokia Lumia 1000 that could very well be the rumored Lumia EOS, or Catwalk.

We are not quite sure what to make of this – could it be a simple typo, or are we on the verge of something huge on the smartphone front? Only time will tell, and assuming that this is actually the Nokia Lumia 1000 without any typos being part of the mix, it would certainly be one tier above the current flag bearer for Nokia, which would be the Lumia 920. We await with bated breath to see just what Nokia has in store for the masses in due time, so patience will have to be the virtue which we hold on to at the moment.

What about you you? What do you think that the Lumia 1000 will be all about, is it a typo, or will it be another badly kept secret by a telephone company?

Lightning Review: Nokia’s Review of Its Own Phone

Today, Nokia-employed “staff writer” Adam Fraser published a “review” of the Nokia Lumia 620 on Nokia’s Conversations blog. That’s confusing! So we thought we could help clear things up by reviewing his review. More »

Will Nokia’s Next Lumia Get a 41-Megapixel PureView Image Sensor?

Released last year, the PureView 808 was essentially a prototype phone. It ran Nokia’s dying—and now officially dead—Symbian operating system but its 41-megapixel, one-inch image sensor was a beast. Now, The Guardian reports what people have been speculating and rumoring since Nokia dropped the PureView 808 nearly a year ago: The 41-Megapixel sensor is destined for a Nokia Windows Phone. More »

Nokia tablet tipped by CEO on heels of Surface

This week the CEO of Nokia Stephen Elop has hinted that they’ve once again begun considering the possibility of a tablet PC in the near future. This word comes from an interview Elop did with the Australian Financial Review in which he says the company is not announcing a tablet, but is watching the Microsoft Surface tablet specifically to see how the market will respond to Windows 8 in tablet form. Though this is not an official announcement of a tablet being created by Nokia, it does remind us that they’ve got tablets in mind as a potential future pathway.

surfacego

This is not the first we’ve heard of a Nokia tablet in the works. One of the more interesting hints came back in March of 2012 where Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari confirmed a tablet with the choice quip, “we are working on it.” It was back then that we also saw supply chain sources claiming Nokia would be using Microsoft’s Windows RT system (not quite named that back at the time) for its future first tablet delivery. Elop back then also noted that Nokia wouldn’t create a tablet until it could bring something unique to the space.

We also saw notes about a Nokia Windows RT tablet in December of 2012 complete with a keyboard cover containing a separate battery for the unit. Here in February of 2013 we’ve got Elop once again speaking up (with AFR) saying, “we haven’t announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely.” Elop went on to note that the Nokia is “studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet,” making it clear that they are “trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time.”

Be sure to read the post Where’s Nokia’s tablet strategy? from Chris Davies posted all the way back in July of 2012 to see another guide on this situation that holds true to today. It’s not just about Windows RT, Windows 8, or even Windows Phone 8 here, it’s about Nokia and their lovely Lumia lineup only existing as a smartphone-sized solution. Should Nokia stick to this form for a handheld unit, or does a company with such a massive name need a massive touchscreen offering as well?

Nokia PureView Phase 1 Sensor To Hit Lumia Range?

Nokia PureView Phase 1 Sensor To Hit Lumia Range?Sometime last month, we did talk about speculation concerning a Nokia Lumia 920 that will sport the PureView sensor, lining up nicely in time for a MWC announcement to wow the masses. Well, it seems that this particular rumor has been reconfirmed by folks over at The Guardian, who claims that they have come into contact with sources close to Nokia, touting that a future Nokia Lumia device in the US will see the same 41-megapixel sensor that one can find in the 808 PureView, running on the Windows Phone platform, with the codename EOS.

There are other rumors in the past that the EOS handset will be making its way to AT&T as well as Verizon, and in all probability, it will be a scaled down version of the PureView Phase 1 sensor that will carry 20-something megapixels to perform all the oversampling work. It is also said that the Nokia Lumia EOS will be slim to keep up with the times, machined from aluminum that will surely be pleasing to the eyes as such devices are wont to do in this day and age.

Nokia rolls out Windows Phone 7.8 update to Lumia users running 7.5

Updating one’s smartphone to a newer software version is always fun, and so some Nokia Lumia users have a reason to be happy today. Nokia is in the process of rolling out a WP 7.8 update for Lumia users who are running Windows Phone 7.5. For those with the Lumia models slated for the update, you’ll be seeing a notification soon if you haven’t already received it.

nokia

The update is being pushed out to Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800, and 900 handsets running operator-approved software or that are unlocked. The roll out is said to be taking place over the next few weeks, so if you aren’t seeing the update yet, you might have to be patient for awhile. The update is said to have gone through extensive testing before being released.

Improvements from 7.5 to 7.8 include the ability to share via Internet and Bluetooth, additional apps, including Nokia City Lens, and Camera Extras, which is meant to greatly increase the functionality of your handset’s camera. With Camera Extras, users will be able to take Smart Group Shots and action shots, as well as utilize a self-timer and create panorama images via stitching.

In addition, the start screen has been revamped in 7.8, offering re-sizable tiles (they can be made smaller or larger, depending on preference), as well as new lock screen options. Bing’s daily wallpaper feature, which has been available to desktop users for awhile now, is also provided in 7.8, changing the background image automatically every day to one of Bing’s image backgrounds.

Other extra features are less obvious, such as additional language support. When you’ll receive your update depends on the carrier you’re under. To ensure you don’t miss the update, enable notifications under “Settings” > “Phone Update” so that you’re pinged when the software update rolls your way. Nokia says to contact your carrier if you don’t get the update within three weeks.
