Nokia City Lens released from Beta for Lumia devices

It’s time for the greatness of Nokia’s own City Lens technology to be released into the wild, the same powerful beast shown earlier this year at CTIA and more recently on the Lumia 820 and 920 lineup! This software brings the power of Nokia Maps to the virtual universe showing an overlay of places and attractions on your real world view through your device’s camera. City Lens will be available for several Nokia devices for real, in a v1.0 version out of Beta, starting today!

If you use the Nokia Lumia 900, 800, or 710, you’re in luck. These devices will have access to City Lens starting today. All you’ve got to do is follow the following directions to grab it quite quickly! You’ll be using your device’s camera to see a QR-code first and foremost – from there you’ll get the download and you’ll be on your way! Note that you do need an internet connection to grab this download, so make sure data or wifi are on!

1. Press the Search button on your Nokia Lumia and then tap Vision
2. Scan the barcode
3. Tap on the link when it appears on the screen
4. Install the application from the Windows Phone Marketplace

You could also, of course, just go straight to the Windows Phone Marketplace, but that’s not nearly as fun a process! Have a peek at our hands-on with City Lens through the eyes of the Nokia Lumia 920 here, and note that the final version for the 920 and the 820 will vary just a bit from the version you’re seeing for your 900, 800, or 710 today.

With Windows Phone 8 as it appears on the 920 and 820 you’ll find some features that only appear on Windows Phone 8 devices and above. With this version of City Lens, you’ll be able to pin to start any category tile. You’ll also be able to add your own favorite searches, and you’ll be able to use City Lens in both portrait and landscape modes. Check our timeline below for more City Lens action!

EE confirms Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and Samsung Galaxy S III among first handsets on new LTE network (updated)

Confirming those early rumors, Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 flagship will come to the UK exclusively on Everything Everywhere’s newly re-branded EE LTE network. The 4.5-inch Lumia 920 will launch on the freshly announced carrier later this year, along with the Lumia 820, Samsung Galaxy S III LTE, Huawei Ascend 4G and HTC One XL (if the on stage demo is anything to go by). We’re still waiting for the full list of hardware to be confirmed, along with availability details, but for now, you can start deciding your weapon of choice.

Update: We’ve just added the press release, which confirms the HTC One XL is among the launch handsets.

Update: Looks like that GS III will be an exclusive “titanium grey” color running Jelly Bean out of the box, according to Pocket-lint. Also, EE just confirmed to us that — as rumored — it has exclusivity over the Lumia 920.

Nokia Lumia Flame to replace the Lumia 710?

Now that we have come down to earth from the high at Nokia’s press event in New York last week, it is time to go through numerous rumors concerning Nokia’s range of Lumia devices. It seems that the Nokia Lumia Flame – at least according to The Verge, will see the Lumia 710 through the exit door as its replacement. Obviously in an effort to keep up with the times, the Lumia Flame will come with a Windows Phone 8 operating system, complete with a 4” display as well as a rumored chipset that is similar to the one found in the Nokia Zeal, which would mean a 1GHz dual-core processor as well as 512MB RAM.

Other specifications making their rounds include a 5-megapixel camera as well as 4GB of internal memory that can be further augmented using a microSD memory card. Apart from that, there is also word being bandied about that a Nokia Lumia Glory will oust the Lumia 610, being a Windows Phone 7.8 device though, would mean it will most probably lack the kind of press treatment that higher end devices enjoy.

The Engadget Interview: Nokia’s Kevin Shields on PureView, floating sensors and the ‘missile’ that is the Lumia 920

Nokia's Kevin Shields talks PureView, floating sensors and the 'missile' that is the Lumia 920

A conversation with Nokia’s Stephen Elop, as we had earlier this week, is quite an experience. He’s kind, friendly, charming and obviously extremely passionate about everything Nokia — but his PR deflector shields are always full-forward. Ask him a challenging question and you’ll be greeted with a very gentle response that sounds like an answer but is actually just a deftly delivered retooling of some standard PR-friendly message you’ve probably already heard.

Interviewing Nokia SVP Kevin Shields is, as we’ve seen in the past, a somewhat more… direct experience. Why did Nokia go with a gloss finish on the 920 instead of the matte we loved on the 800 and 900? “Because it’s awesome.” How durable is the 920? “It’s like a missile.” How confident is he that wireless charging will take off? “We are all in.” Shields was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time after Nokia’s event this week to talk Lumia and to explain just what “PureView” means now that it’s been applied to a second phone. Click on through to get educated.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: September 7th, 2012

If you’re a person who follows the morning wrap-up here on SlashGear exclusively, you’ve found yourself lacking a bit of coverage this week – do not despair! It’s not because I and we don’t love you, it’s because we’ve been hard at work with so much hardcore in-depth onsite coverage that the wrapper was trampled underfoot! But here’s a tip, before you continue on to today’s morning coverage: there’s also an evening wrap-up that’s there for you each day to bring you the best in all-day SlashGear news as well; check it out in our SlashGear Evening Wrap-up tag portal now!

Start your day off right with a look at some new high-res Mars photos from Curiosity as it makes with the social network self-portrait shots. LG is bringing a $20,000 television to the market, it’s got so much excellence inside, you’ll think you got a bargain! If you’re paying attention to the iMac and Apple Thunderbolt supplies out there in the market, you’ll notice a great possibility of a September Apple refresh in more sectors than just one.

In the UK you’ll find Everything Everywhere planning an event on the eve of the iPhone 5. There’s a November 2nd release date mentioned this week by insiders working near the Nokia Lumia 920. There are a few Euro carriers saying the same thing. Madden NFL 2013 has sold an amazing 1.65 million units in its first week on the market.

There’s a device called the HTC 8X, also known as the HTC Accord, out there in the works right now with leaking details and a press photo to boot – looks flat! If you’re a fan of The Avengers from Marvel Comics, you’ll be glad to find the Avengers Initiative out in the mobile market now – starting with iTunes, of course. You’ll want to check out the new AirBridge if you want to out-stream AirPlay in the near future – must see and wireless get.

If you’re a Mac Pro user, you’re still loved! In addition to that, NVIDIA has unveiled the Quadro K5000 video card for you to keep you up to date in the real world – check it out right this instant. The iPhone 5 may very well be chopping out Samsung – but take that story with a grain of salt, Samsung’s been a GIANT member of the iPhone innards team since the beginning. The idea that they’re out is almost unthinkable. Apple has also been tipped to be bringing a Pandora rival with streaming music action within months – prepare for it!

How to Enable Image Stabilization on the Nokia Lumia 920 (Not Really) [Nokia]

It seems that Nokia screwed their Lumia 920 camera demo even more than we thought. Not only they faked the video but also faked photos. More »

Verizon confirms ongoing talks with Nokia for potential tie-up, declines to kiss and tell

Remember that image sent recently by an anonymous tipster showing two versions of the Nokia Lumia 822 nestled comfortably within Verizon’s device management system? Turns out there is something cooking between the Finnish phone maker and Big Red after all. The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon has confirmed plans involving a Nokia Corp. tie-up, with sources familiar with the deal saying that the companies have been in talks since the spring. Just exactly what it is they’re working on, however, still remains a mystery. Apparently, Verizon and Nokia are playing their cards close to the vest and refusing to disclose specific details about a potential deal. Still, the betting money is on some sort of tie-up involving Nokia’s Lumia line. The Windows 8 handsets have seen a deluge of news this month, mostly involving the new 920 and 820 models. Whatever Nokia’s got planned, several analysts also said the company needs to act fast. With Samsung’s popular Galaxy S III already out and Apple’s new iPhone expected to launch soon, Nokia’s new phones are expected to see some tough competition.

Nokia Lumia 920 hands-on extended cut: City Lens and PureView

We had an extended look at the Nokia Lumia 920 this week courtesy of Nokia and Microsoft, complete with a brief glance at the difference between standard and PureView photography technology. What you’re about to see is a look at the unibody-like design of the hardware first, then a vision of what it means to work with Windows Phone 8 with Nokia-specific additions like Nokia City Lens and wireless charging right out of the box. And of course you’ll have Microsoft’s full suite of Office apps to back you up as well, SkyDrive included!

Have a peek first at how Nokia presents an updated vision for their Lumia line with a lovely 4.5-inch display and a body that’s 10.7mm thick, 70.8mm wide, and 130.3mm tall. You’ll be seeing a bit of a “smile” at the top and bottom of the device as the front stays flat under the pillow of the display glass and the back curves to the contour of your hand. This device is available in yellow, red, white, gray, and black, and will be available to actually own later this year – price and release dates have not yet been revealed, mind you.

Inside you’ve got a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Processor, inside you’ve got NFC capabilities as well as wireless charging abilities right out of the box, and the whole shebang will be available eventually with GSM, WCDMA, and 4G LTE connectivity as well! This device works with a microSIM card, has 1GB RAM and 32GB internal storage – with 7GB cloud storage free via SkyDrive.

Of course one of the most fabulous elements in this device is its Carl Zeiss Tessar lens working with 8.7 megapixels of power with PureView technology. You’ve got a glorious bit of technology under the hood here, folks, ready for image stabilization, lightening of dark environments, and such vibrant scenes as you’ve never seen before. Have a peek at our hands-on photos and video above and below and don’t forget to hit the timeline below as well for more key points from the Nokia event – and stay tuned for more Lumia and Windows 8!

Nokia Lumia 920: A Bigger and Better Windows Phone?

Unless you’ve been living in a cabin somewhere near a lake or in the woods, you’ve probably heard about Nokia’s Lumia smartphones. The previous models were pretty good, but Nokia’s upped the ante with the Lumia 920, a week or so before the iPhone 5 is set to be announced.

nokia lumia 920 smartphone

The Nokia Lumia 920 runs Windows Phone 8, packs an 8.7 MP Nokia PureView camera with optical image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics. Under the hood, it’s got a speedy 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 1GB or RAM. Its 1.2 MP 720p front-facing camera will let you video chat with your friends.

The screen looks gorgeous – at 4.5 inches it should do well. Its curved “PureMotion HD+” display offers a crisp 1280 x 768 resolution – even higher res than the iPhone 4S’ 960×640 Retina display. There’s an automatic sunlight reading mode and the ability to sense touch inputs through regular gloves. Its screen will also respond to fingernail touches, which is good for people with longer nails.

The phone comes with 32 GB of built-in storage. Though it doesn’t have a microSD-card slot, so it’s not expandable – though you do get 7GB of SkyDrive online storage as well. It’s equipped with a Qi-compatible wireless charging battery, which is nice and has a 2,000 mAh capacity. The price hasn’t been announced yet, and it will be released in Q4 2012.

Nokia Lumia 820 hands-on extended cut with NFC

It’s time to have a bit longer look at a video showing off Nokia’s brand new Lumia 820, the smaller of the two smartphones revealed this week with a fully functional version of Windows Phone 8 onboard. This device has many of the same powerful attributes as the Nokia Lumia 920, but has a bit smaller profile and brings in rounded edges and an interchangeable backplate that doesn’t have NFC embedded right out of the box. What we got to see yesterday was not just the special NFC-toting backplate that you can purchase separate from the 820, but the device working live with Nokia City Lens and Nokia Transport as well.

If you’ll head back to our original hands-on with City Lens drive suite you’ll see how this software has been in the works for Nokia devices for quite a while now. With the launch of the new Windows Phone 8 line of Nokia Lumia devices, this GPS-centered world-expanding set of apps is able to show you how unique the Nokia vision can be. The video you’re about to see includes another peek at City Lens as it applies to New York City – full of locations for whatever activity you so choose: perhaps you’d like to head to a local pizza joint?

You’ll also see our Nokia host show us through Nokia Transport which on the Lumia 820 demonstrates how long a journey from your current location to a chosen location would take on the train and on foot. This app is able to not only tell you how long it would take if you started right at the minute you found the info, but in the future as well. If you’re starting in 10 minutes, your journey might take a whole lot different amount of time depending on traffic – Nokia knows.

And of course there’s the NFC action you’ll also be seeing in our hands-on with the Nokia-related accessories shown off this week as well. Here the Nokia Lumia 820 can take part in the fun with its own NFC backplate – or battery cover, whatever you want to call it – if you do so choose to partake. Having this separate option for NFC allows Nokia to offer the device at a lower cost if the user doesn’t need the technology – fun stuff!
