Nokia: 7 million Lumias sold to date in 54 countries, 4 million in the last quarter

Fresh on the heels of the much-anticipated Lumia 920 announcement, some new figures have come to light regarding its predecessors’ success. According to the Finnish phone-maker, a total of 7-million Windows Phone / Lumia devices have shipped to date. The firm was also keen to point out that this number comes from 54 markets in total — some 130 different operators. While this might seem modest, especially with only 600,000 of those sales being in the US, 4-million of those Lumia devices were sold in Q2, roughly double that of the preceding two quarters, so things are on the up. Now it just remains to see what impact any new Windows Phone 8 phones will have.

Nokia brings wireless charging to Virgin Atlantic lounges, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Nokia thinks you’ll like the wireless phone charging on your Lumia 920 or 820 enough to want to take it on the road, and to that end it’s striking a deal to bring the cable-free experience beyond the home. Both Virgin Atlantic’s lounge at Heathrow Airport and countertops at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the US will let you top up your Windows Phone without having to hunt for a power outlet. We’re still waiting on details like the timing, but we’re glad to know that we won’t have to lug around our FatBoy Recharge Pillows just to keep living in Nokia’s vision of the future.

Nokia’s New City Lens and Maps Make Lumia an Augmented Reality Beast [City Lens]

Nokia Lumia 920 Officially Revealed: PureView Camera, Wireless Charging, Snapdragon S4 Processor

920

Nokia has finally put weeks of speculation to rest at its New York press conference today, as the Finnish phone company just pulled back the curtains on its newest flagship handset: the Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia 920.

As expected (thanks to plenty of pre-event leaks), the new Lumia sports a 4.5-inch 720p display, a 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, a 2,000 mAh battery. Again, not exactly the sort of spec sheet that will set your world on fire — it’s on par with many current high-end Android devices — but Windows Phone has never been the most hardware-intensive mobile OS out there.

That said, there’s plenty to like about the Nokia’s refined take on Windows Phone 8 hardware. It retains the same design language featured in Nokia’s previous high-end Windows Phones (full disclosure: I still love the colorful, angular, polycarbonate chassis Nokia uses), and that said, it would be easy to mistake a 920 for one of its predecessors were it not for the new Windows Phone logo centered along the bottom edge of the screen. The Lumia 920 also supports Qi’s wireless charging standard, so it all takes to charge the thing is to rest it on with a “Fatboy” charging pillow. Yes, really. Fear not though, the 920 still has a bog-standard microUSB port for charging the old-fashioned way. What’s more, the Lumia 920′s screen plays nice with touch input even when a user is wearing gloves — where has this feature been all my life?

Though the device itself doesn’t offer up many hints, a (possibly over-dramatic) introduction video reveals the inclusion of a PureView sensor. Granted, the Lumia 920 only features an 8.7-megapixel sensor compared to the chunky PureView 808′s 41-megapixel behemoth, but Nokia’s Jo Harlow calls the new handset the “best smartphone camera” out there. The Lumia 920′s camera isn’t quite as whiz-bang amazing as the original 808′s was (no zooming without losing image quality, sadly) but additions like Nokia’s “Floating Lens” image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics help make Harlow’s claims believable.

Given the 920′s focus on capturing top-notch photos and video, Nokia is also playing up the 920′s PureMotion HD+ screen tech, something that Harlow points as providing “better than HD resolution.” Nokia’s favored ClearBlack technology is present and accounted for too, and it’s gotten quite a boost — the device can detect ambient light (say, sunlight for instance) and make adjustments to brightness and color to enhance viewability.

It was only this past spring that Nokia crashed onto the US smartphone scene to stake its claim and make inroads into consumers’ minds and hearts. Now, just five months later, the Finnish company’s poised to overtake the buzz of its fledgling, former Windows Phone flagship, with what many consider to be a true high-end contender: the Lumia 920.

As one of the first Windows Phone 8 devices to be officially announced, this device augments Espoo’s line with a larger, curved 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2,000mAh battery, NFC, integrated wireless charging and an 8-megapixel rear PureView camera capable of 1080p video. The display packs WXGA (1,280 x 768) resolution, is 25 percent brighter than the next best panel on the market and it’s the fastest LCD that Nokia has ever shipped on a smartphone. What’s more, the screen also boasts what Nokia calls “Super Sensitive Touch,” which promises to let you use it even when wearing gloves or mitts.

As you can tell from its humpless back, this PureView is not that of the 41-megapixel variety — it’s merely all about the branding, as the moniker will now ring synonymous with “high-end cameras.” Despite that fall from 808 grace, Nokia’s Head of Imaging Damian Dinning has assured detractors the magic is in what’s done with the optics and pixels and not sheer gargantuan sampling size. To wit, the 920 employs a “floating lens,” which, in layman’s terms, translates into hardware image stabilization and also packs impressive low-light capabilities — an area the company’s seems squarely focused upon.

In a true return to form, the 920 also hearkens back to the Lumia that started it all, opting for the “sinuous tapering” that debuted on the 800 with glass edges that blend gently into the polycarbonate hull. Unfortunately, not all of that design language has made the transition, given its chassis now appears glossier and more polished, distancing itself from that premium matte finish. Still, as looks go, the handset’s keeping to its 900 origins, appearing nigh indistinct from its predecessor save for that attention-grabbing mellow yellow hue.And as a bonus, Nokia’s imbued the device with integrated wireless charging, based on the Qi standard, which corroborates those leaks we saw just last week. The Lumia 920 will arrive in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants and both are expected to ship “in selected markets” later this year.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 4, 2012

We’re getting ready to end a Tuesday that has produced some rather big news, so let’s jump right into it, shall we? By far the biggest story of the day had to do with upcoming the Apple event. Apple started sending out invitations for the event today, using a picture that gives away what to expect at the event (spoiler alert: the iPhone 5 is coming). With an iPhone 5 reveal essentially confirmed, analysts are predicting success for the new handset, saying that it could potentially sell 10 million units this quarter. Not bad, provided the device actually hits those marks.

Speaking of the iPhone 5, Apple has prepared itself for the lawsuit Samsung promised should the iPhone maker release device with LTE functionality. iPhone 5 nano SIM cards were also spotted today, leading us to believe that the next iPhone will be launching shortly after it’s revealed. Apple isn’t the only one with an event incoming though, as HTC also started sending out invitations for a September 19 event of its own today. The Galaxy S III has knocked the iPhone 4S out of the top US sales spot, and we enjoyed a rather colorful Nokia Lumia 920 leak today.

After seeing it pop up a few times, Verizon announced the Samsung Galaxy Stellar today alongside the new LG Intuition, and Nokia has teased that some of its Windows Phone 8 Lumias might come complete with wireless charging. The FBI fell victim to a massive AntiSec hack today, and after the FBI agent targeted in the attack called for hackers to help the FBI fend off these kinds of breaches, the FBI called out AntiSec and said it wasn’t involved in any such attack. The Panasonic Toughbook 19 has been reintroduced with new third-generation Intel Ivy Bridge processors, and we caught a glimpse of the Nokia N9, which will sadly never see the light of day.

JXD has a very familiar-looking Android gaming device on offer, and today the Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies was given a release date. The Pantech Flex is heading straight for AT&T with a budget price tag, and Syabas has announced the next iteration of its popular Popcorn Hour media player. Bethesda released Hearthfire on the Xbox 360 earlier today, a spec list for the (hopefully) upcoming Panasonic GH3 was leaked, and Huawei has finally given the Ascend D1 – its new flagship device – a release date. Finally tonight, Square Enix has a new Final Fantasy collection for die-hard fans, but you better be ready to hand over a stack of cash if you want to get your hands on it.

That does it for the SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up for this Tuesday. Now, go out and enjoy the rest of your evening!

Nokia Lumia 920 appears in five color leak

Another image has appeared showing off what very well may be the hero device at this week’s Nokia/Microsoft event, this being the Lumia 920, a Windows Phone 8 smartphone for the next generation. This model has been leaked with information leading us to believe that it’ll be working with PureView technology in its 8 megapixel camera, this notion all but confirmed by Nokia’s PureView chief this morning. His comments including how “it’s NOT about the number of pixels but what you do with them” appearing as a direct response to criticism over the not-yet-confirmed Lumia smartphone.

This newest image shows the Lumia 920 in a variety of colors, the white and the black casings being ones we’d not yet seen at this point in time. The rest of the leaks suggest that this device will indeed be running Windows Phone 8 complete with its new smaller set of tiles for a more diverse range of abilities on the device’s home screen. This device will likely be popping up with a dual-core processor from Qualcomm and will have both front and back-facing cameras.

You’ll see a volume rocker on the right along with the power button and a physical camera shutter button as well. The whole model appears quite similar to the previous Nokia smartphone range with Windows Phone, particularly in the case of the Nokia Lumia 900. Nokia will be continuing their image branding here and will be pushing hard with Microsoft to keep the Windows Phone universe strong – and growing, of course.

The Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system from Microsoft will be part of the company’s big push for the next generation of Windows software on the whole, this including Windows 8 and Windows RT for tablets as well. Stay tuned for more information on Nokia’s contribution to the party as we head to the New York media event tomorrow bright and early – be here at 9:30 AM EST for all the newest blasts straight from Nokia!

BONUS: the back of the Nokia 820 has also been shown by the same source – in purple!
