If you’re a Nokia Lumia 820 or 920 owner, you now have a chance to try the Amber update a little early. WindowsMania.pl has posted unofficial ROMs (820, 920) that upgrade international versions of the Windows Phones to the Amber release ahead of Microsoft’s rollout. Both ROMs are relatively easy to install from a PC using NokiaViews.com‘s instructions, although they’re risky: they require wiping the phone’s data, and there’s no guarantees of future official upgrades. Even so, the new code may be worthwhile for Lumia fans who’d rather not wait a few weeks for a minor OS refresh.

What happens when you take 200 Lumia 820s and pin them to a wall? You get a 12,000 x 6,400-pixel display, natch. This week at Build 2013 in San Francisco, Nokia and Microsoft teamed up to show this tiled monitor made of identical phones each running the same custom-built app. A master handset is used to control what’s on the wall by communicating with each phone over WiFi (IP multicast). One demo was showing a massive animated grid of live tiles representing a selection of apps from the Windows Phone store. In another demo, the wall was displaying Bing Maps (using Here data) and being controlled interactively by the master handset. Take a look at our gallery below.

Vodafone’s British division has been shy to embrace Windows Phone much at all in recent months. There’ll be no such reservation as of February 6th, when the carrier starts offering a wide array of Windows Phone 8 devices. HTC’s Windows Phone 8X and 8S will ship in subdued colors, while the (partly expected) Lumia 620, 820 and 920 will be available in livelier hues. We’ve yet to hear about pricing — and there’s no mention of Samsung’s ATIV S, for completists — but the launch remains good news for UK residents who want to try Microsoft’s approach to smartphones without leaving the Red Dot network.

The Lumia 820 has been tucked away behind the shadow of its bigger brother ever since it was revealed, but if any phone represents the Windows Phone 8 vision — different phones for different people — it’s this next-generation Lumia. Avoiding the unibody build of the rest of the family, this phone has an outer shell that’s removable and can work with a range of cases: glossy, not-glossy, ruggedized and capable of wireless charging. It’s a nice option, one that offers a taste of hardware customization before you’ve even started swiping around the Live Tiles and customizing the color schemes.

Under the lid, there’s a removable 1,650mAh battery, with access to expandable microSD storage. Other specs include 1GB of RAM, the same 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor used in the Lumia 920 and a 4.3-inch OLED 800 x 480 display, albeit with the same glove-courting super-sensitivity found on that other new Lumia. On AT&T, it’ll be $50 upfront, half the outlay for the 920, while in the UK, it’s priced SIM-free at £380 in the UK, again compared to £445 for the bigger model. At this reduced price, you won’t get to sample Nokia’s optical image stabilization, but you’ll still get a Carl Zeiss lens paired with an 8-megapixel sensor. So there’s some understandable drawbacks compared to Nokia’s statement phone and its two greatest strengths, but how does Windows Phone 8 fare on a cheaper handset?
