A Glowing Book That Illuminates More Than Just Your Brain

Max Gunawan’s wonderful Lumio accordion book lamp has been popping up on design sites for the past year or so. But after a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, it’s finally available for purchase, bringing its soft glow to home libraries around the world.

The Lumio Lamp Looks Like The Most Beautiful Book You’ve Never Read

lumio

Sometimes the best Kickstarter projects are the simplest ones. Lumio is a lamp masquerading as a beautiful hardcover book with a wooden finish. To turn the lamp on, you open it up. To turn it off, you close. It’s equal parts simplicity and ingenuity.

Lumio came into being when architect and designer Max Gunawan was trying to design a modular home that could fit inside a compact car. When Max realized he didn’t have enough funds to build a working prototype, he decided to use the his built up expertise somewhere else.

“When I decided to pivot and translate the concept into a folding lamp, it was a natural progression to use the form of the sketchbook as a way to package the lamp,” says Max on his Kickstarter page. “That’s how Lumio was born.”

An LED powers the Lumio, which can last up to 8 hours when fully charged. The cover comes in dark walnut, warm cherry, and blonde maple options and is also embedded with magnets that allows you to easily attach the Lumio to metal surfaces.

Gunawan has raised over $400,000 on his Kickstarter page, shooting well past his original $60K goal. You only have a few more days days to pledge and nab a Lumio for yourself, so if you want one I’d suggest you get going now.

Lumio Portable Lamp Opens Up

Lumio Portable Lamp Opens UpNow here is a lamp that you might just want to check out. After all, isn’t knowledge supposed to be something that brings “light” to the world? Well, you can always illuminate the world around you with the Lumio Portable Lamp, where this multi-purpose piece of lighting equipment will actually unfold itself from a book. Isn’t that creative? In fact, this tiny and lightweight device tips the scales at a mere 1 pound, measuring 8″ in height and an inch thick. It can see action just about anywhere you want it to, where depending on your creativity, it is unfolded into a range of positions for different lighting needs, ranging from a full circle to replicate a lampshade or a half-circle if you need some under-the-counter light.

The Lumio’s battery has been rated to last for a good 8 hours on a solitary charge, and once you are done using it, just fold the Lumio into the book-like shape that it was created in. Expect to juice up the integrated battery via a power connector that is located discreetly on the spine of the Lumio. Right now, the Lumio remains a Kickstarter that needs your pledge of $95, where it will come with an FSC-certified wood cover in three finish options, namely Dark Walnut, Warm Cherry, and Blonde Maple should it meet its intended financial target.

Lumio hides a lamp inside the pages of a book, takes to Kickstarter (video)

Image

Last week, we stopped by the TechShop to check out Lumio, a lamp that’s masquerading as a book. While you could probably make one of your own with a few trips to IKEA, we’re rather taken with the idea of toting one of these around in our bags. Now, inventor Max Gunawan has followed through on his promise to get the hardware onto Kickstarter, where he’s already half-way toward his $60,000 goal to start his first production run. Still to be convinced that he needs your money? Head on past the break to watch the pitch.

Lumio desk lamp takes light reading literally (video)

With the future of reading heading squarely in the direction of electronic devices, what to do with the old timey book form? Build a lamp, of course. During a recent visit to the City by the Bay, we popped into the TechShop hackerspace and were introduced to Max Gunawan, the designer behind Lumio (not to be confused with a certain smartphone line of similar name). The product, developed in that very space, offers up a cool take on the desktop lamp, fitting it into a wooden, old timey-looking book form. Open it up and the pages fan out into what looks like a paper lantern.

It’s an LED light powered by a lithium ion battery that’ll give you around eight hours on a charge. Due to the foldable nature of the Lumio, the device is portable and can be opened into a number of configurations, to suit your needs. Gunawan is a couple of days away from launching a Kickstarter page for the project, in hopes of getting together $60,000. Interested funders will be able to pick one up for around $95 — wait for it to come to market, and that price will jump to around $125 or $135.

After the break, check out a video of Gunawan giving us the lowdown on Lumio.

Lumio a Kickstarter project worth looking into

For some of us, we would love nothing better than to unwind with a good book in hand after a particularly gruelling day at work, and this would mean three things: you would need a very comfortable sofa or chair to read your book, have some cookies and milk on the side, and of course, own a decent lamp or lighting source so that your eyes need not end up more strained than they already are after a long day at the office, staring at the monitor for hours on end.

Chances are most nooks and crannies of your home already have a lamp, but how about getting a lamp that is designed in a less traditional manner? Why not pick up the Lumio, a Kickstarter project that comes in the form of a book and also functions as a light source? It is made to function just like a book as well, where all you need to do is turn the cover, and the light within will turn on. It is powered by LEDs, and a full charge can last it up to 8 hours on the go, making it ideal to bring with you wherever you go. Thanks to its flexible nature, it can be styled a number of ways, ranging from a table lamp to a ceiling pendant and an accent light among others.
