Apple Patent Suggests Image Identification Security Measure On iOS, Mac

A new Apple patent application has been uncovered that could make it possible for iOS and Mac users to authenticate their identity without requiring the use passcodes, third-party software or blood samples in order to unlock their Apple product.

According to the patent, the user would be able to unlock their iOS device and Mac through image identification. The system would display an image to the user from their iPhoto or iCloud profiles to then ask the user to identify who or what the image is of in order to issue an unlock of the device. To add additional security, the user could order the system to display additional images, just in case whoever is trying to force their way into your device has beginner’s luck. (more…)

Including The iPad, Report Claims Apple Owns 20.1% Of The PC Market

Including The iPad, Report Claims Apple Owns 20.1% Of The PC MarketWith the power and capabilities of our tablets these days, would it be fair to compare them to PCs? Well research firm Canalys seems to think so, and according to their latest report which combines the sales of Apple computers and tablets, Apple has roughly sold about 27 million computers during Q1 2013, owning 20.1% of the PC market which leads Canalys to dub Apple as the largest PC maker in the world. However it should be noted that other research firms like IDC and Gartner distinguish between the PC and tablet market, so really we guess it’s just a matter of perception.

To put this into context, rival firms like Lenovo managed to sell 14.8 million PCs, while HP shipped 15 million, giving them 11% and 11.2% of the market share respectively. Samsung’s combined PC and tablet sales gave them 9%, while Dell on the other hand managed 9.7 million desktops shipped, giving them about 7% of the market. What do you guys make of this? Do you think it’s fair that tablets are lumped together with PCs, especially since a lot of people are starting to use tablets for productivity purposes, web surfing, reading and even gaming?

Siri For Mac Could Appear In OS X 10.9 According To Job Listing

Siri For Mac Could Appear In OS X 10.9 According To Job ListingBack in September of 2012, a patent by Apple surfaced which suggested that perhaps Siri could be coming to Mac OS in the future, and rumors of OS X 10.9 also suggested that Siri and Maps could be integrated into the computer OS as well. As it stands there is no official word from Apple regarding that possibility, but a job listing spotted by Apple Insider has revealed possible plans as well, thus making the rumors and speculation a bit more believable.

The job calls for a Siri UI Engineer and according to some of the qualities the candidate should possess, it reads, “Familiarity with Unix, especially Mac OS X […] Passion for the Macintosh platform and writing simple, elegant software that is easy and fun to use.” Since Siri is currently limited to iOS, the requirement of familiarity with Mac OS X is rather interesting. Obviously no word on if this holds any merit, or when it will launch, but some believe Siri for Mac OS X could be announced for version 10.9. Either way we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Anyone looking forward to having Siri on your Mac?

Gartner: Apple just as Enterprise friendly as Microsoft by 2014

This week Gartner has released a report in which they predict Apple to be as accepted by Enterprise IT by the year 2014 as Microsoft is here in 2013. That’s may appear to be a mighty large feat for those unaware of the inroads Apple’s taken over the past few years into this space that’s traditionally be dominated by Microsoft, but the truth of the matter is as Gartner says – it’s certainly looking like Apple’s presence in the business world is about to get much more visible if (and perhaps when) it reaches past Microsoft.

MacBook-pro-13-retina-21-macbook-pro-13-retina--580x277

The report follows Gartner’s assertion that mobile apps will be of a much more hybrid nature in a very big way over the next few years. This idea and Apple’s growth in the Enterprise IT environment create vision for the future where businesses work with devices based on their hardware quality rather than the operating system they run. It’s important to note here that Gartner is affirming Apple mobile devices as already accepted in a large way by enterprise IT, while Apple’s desktop hardware and software is on the rise.

David Mitchell Smith, vice president and Gartner Fellow says that “Going forward, Apple will continue to benefit from consumerization and will continue to evolve Macs to take on more iOS characteristics.” It’s because of this cross-pollination that Macs will grow in their use by businesses across the market. Smith continues, saying that because the iOS universe is being pushed to desktop feature by feature and because Apple’s mobile lineup continues to be massively popular, Mac desktop systems will inevitably continue to be accepted by enterprise as consumer demand grows.

The Gartner team also spoke on Microsoft’s mobile systems in Windows Phone and Windows 8 (and Windows RT for tablets too, we must assume). They say that enterprise acceptance of these mobile systems are due in a large way to the relationship the companies have with Microsoft rather than the features the smartphones and tablets work with. Because Microsoft has “not benefited from consumerization”, as Gartner says, Apple will continue to grow in this rather healthy way.

Consumerization here is, as Gartner says, “driven first by consumer demand, and then by the demand of those consumers to bring that technology into the workplace.” How simple is that? Sounds like a winning strategy if there ever was one to be had!

Apple OS X 10.9 sees boost in secret beta testing

Back in November when we heard that OS X 10.9 was being secretly tested by a select number of users (most likely various Apple employees), we remained curious to see what kind of progress the new rumored version would make after a few months. Apple has been releasing updates to OS X every year or so, which means that 10.9 will most likely release sometime this summer based on the operating system’s updating cycle.

macbook_air_live_2-580x326

Back in November, a select number of websites were reporting that they were getting a few visitors that were running OS X 10.9, and now it seems that number has jumped quite significantly since then. AppleInsider has reported that the number of users running OS X 10.9 spiked in January, according to their traffic logs, claiming that they’ve gotten “thousands” of hits from OS X 10.9 machines.

Of course, last year Apple announced OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 during the month of February, so it’s very possible that we could officially hear about version 10.9 sometime soon, although we’re keeping the salt by our side as always. While it seems that 10.9 is really close to an unveiling, we won’t officially believe in it until we see it, of course.

However, it’s obvious that Apple will release a major update to OS X at some point in the future, and they’ve been on a yearly release schedule for the past few releases, so it could be as far ahead as this summer before we see 10.9 show up for download. The biggest question remains, however: What cat will Apple give its next major OS X update this time around?

Commander Keen designer crowdfunds a sequel of sorts, lets us make our own (video)

Commander Keen designer crowdfunds a conceptual sequel, helps us make our own video

PC gamers of a certain age will have very fond memories of the Commander Keen series — usually trying to pogo toward a hard-to-reach gem or frantically escaping a Dopefish. Key creator Tom Hall and his startup Pieces of Fun may be playing our heartstrings like a fiddle, then, by launching a crowdfunding drive for the Keen series’ spiritual successor, Secret Spaceship Club. Along with reintroducing the core sci-fi platform hopping we know so well, the game will include its own editor to let players build their own masterpieces. Newcomers just wanting to whip up a quick map should get a simple mode with easy drawing and visual, cause-and-effect scripting; those with some coding chops will have access to an advanced mode that lets them customize the scripting for objects, cutscenes and even the win conditions. We’ll have the option to publish maps for the world to see, and the results should be playable on a swath of platforms that include Android tablets, iPads, Macs and PCs running either Ubuntu Linux or Windows.

It’s an ambitious plan, and Hall’s development house would like to raise $400,000 by March 1st to make Secret Spaceship Club a reality by February 2014. There’s perks for jumping in early, however, such as becoming an in-game character. Anyone who’s still trying to learn whether or not aliens ate their babysitter will want to at least swing by the source link.

Apple says no to Java 7, blocks browser plug-in

You’ve likely already heard of the Java security scandal, which was something Oracle looked to fix quickly with an update to the software. Even though Oracle says it has patched the issue, some entities disagree. The latest to add its name to the list of dissenters seems to be Apple, as it has decided to block the Java 7 browser plug-in, even after the update was delivered by Oracle.

Javalogo

According to MacGeneration and this thread on the Apple Support Communities site, Apple has blocked this latest version of Java using its Xprotect software. Apple uses Xprotect to keep malware out, and this is the same software it used to block Java earlier in the month. Just as it did before, Apple has made Xprotect block a version of Java that doesn’t yet exist, meaning all earlier versions (including the current one) are blocked as well.

Apple isn’t the only one taking issue with Oracle’s claim that the security concerns have been addressed. The Department of Homeland Security is still recommending that consumers refrain from using Java after the update, saying that all of the security flaws have not yet been fixed. The flaw could potentially allow unsigned applets to run without permission, which in turn means that some of the more undesirable people of the world could potentially take control of your computer.

So, with the Department of Homeland Security still warning against using Java, it may not be such a bad thing that Apple has restricted access to the browser plug-in. This will naturally prove to be headache for a lot of different Mac users considering that Java is everywhere these days, but until Oracle provides another update, there doesn’t seem to be much that can be done. Stay tuned, because we’ll probably be hearing more about this soon.

Apple discontinuing Mac Pro in Europe starting March 1

Due to changes made to regulatory standards, Apple will be discontinuing the Mac Pro in Europe starting March 1. MacRumors received a copy of a note sent out to European distributors regarding the discontinuation of Apple’s tower computers, saying that the Mac Pros “are not compliant with Amendment 1 of regulation IEC 60950-1, Second Edition which becomes effective on this date.”

mac-pro-late-2010-2-slashgear-540x356

While the Mac Pro has been slowly dying off the past couple of years, due to lack of demand and what seems like no interest from Apple to give the series a big update, the discontinuation of the Mac Pro in Europe actually has nothing to do with this lack of demand from users. This only affects Europe and a few other surrounding nations, so Mac Pro sales will continue in all other countries as usual.

The new product certification standards in Europe appear to have something to do with a few internal components in the Mac Pro systems, such as power supply parts and various wiring. It’s currently unclear exactly which aspects of the Mac Pro line don’t meet regulatory standards, but any new Mac Pro systems will not be shipping over to Europe after March 1.

Resellers in Europe will be able to continue selling existing Mac Pro systems that have already shipped over, even if the March 1 date has passed, but starting at that point, no new shipments will be going to Europe. Apple has announced that a redesigned Mac Pro will come sometime this year after the company barely updated the line in June 2012 with outdated processors and no big improvements.
