Winscape virtual window makes the leap to Kinect in 4K-capable, 6-screen glory (video)

Winscape virtual window leaps to Kinect, jumps to 4K footage and 6 screens video

RationalCraft brought its surreal Winscape virtual window to market when the Wii was virtually the only game in town for affordable motion tracking. Microsoft’s Kinect has certainly changed the rules of the game since then, so it’s almost natural that a fourth-generation Winscape has just launched to make use of the much more sophisticated sensor. For a start, there’s no need to dress like Flavor Flav anymore: the camera can recognize anyone, even passers-by, without an oversized necklace. The larger-than-life footage used to generate the window effect has been given its own bump, too, and the app can now handle 4K video as long as the Mac underneath (sorry, Windows folks) is powerful enough to drive it. For those who truly want to be disconnected from reality, there’s even six-display support provided it’s all hooked up to a Mac Pro and a pair of three-output Radeon HD 5770 video cards. RationalCraft’s software is free to try out now, although the requirement for at least two big TVs, a Kinect controller and a fast Mac should say all there is to know about the practical cost of pretending the Golden Gate Bridge is visible from inside a living room in Cleveland.

Golden Master OS X Mountain Lion seeded to developers

Apple has hit a major milestone with its latest version of OS X Mountain Lion. Cupertino previewed Mountain Lion back in February highlighting a bunch of features that would be common between the new Mac desktop operating system and iOS. Those features include Messages, Reminders, Notes, Notification center, Game center, and more.

This week Apple released the Golden Master version of Mountain Lion to developers. Golden Master is a designation that means it is the final version of the software to be released to the public. Final version is a term used rather loosely when it comes to operating systems, because you never know what sort of last-minute changes may need to be made if issues are discovered.

With Mountain Lion going Golden Master, the last major hurdle has been cleared for the operating system to come to the Mac faithful. It’s also worth noting that back during WWDC Apple announced the new operating system would also get other features, including Dictation, iCloud Tabs, and Power Nap. The OS will launch this month, and the update will be $19.99. If you haven’t been keeping up with Mountain Lion, check out the video below to see 30 new features for the operating system.

New Google Chrome beta lets webcams go plugin-free, video chat gets a lot less Flashy

New Google Chrome beta lets webcams go pluginfree, video chat gets a lot less Flashy

Google has been talking up the prospects of integrating WebRTC into Chrome for the past several months. It’s now ready to put theory into practice with a fresh beta of the web browser. The upgrade uses WebRTC to let typical microphones and webcams talk to the browser without using a plugin like Flash or something otherwise so very 2011. Just to embrace this future of direct hardware support ever the more tightly, Google is also building in a gamepad programming interface that lets controllers tap into Chrome without having to rely on Native Client‘s magic. There’s more waiting at the source link, including more direct tie-ins with Cloud Print, so the more adventurous among us can get to chatting (and playing) right away.

Skype’s latest update for Windows and Mac apps fixes bugs, improves stability

Skype updates its Windows, Mac applications with stability improvements, bug fixes

Those of you who are frequent users of Skype on Windows, Mac or Linux will know that the Microsoft-owned video chat service is often rather busy pushing out updates to its desktop applications. And, you guessed it, today’s no exception. Unlike in previous occasions, however, this time Skype’s software goods are only for folks using Redmond or Cupertino machines — but they’re also quite diminutive, so the Linux crowd won’t be missing out on too much. How so? Well, both versions (Mac 5.8, Windows 5.10) aren’t really adding any fresh features, only bringing an undisclosed amount of “generic” bug fixes and some unspecified enhancements to keep the apps running smoothly. You can grab the updates now from either of the links below, or straight from the Skype application on your computer.

PC to Mac sales ratio plummets

This week its been calculated by the analysts at Asymco that in the world of recorded sales for PCs vs Apple‘s Mac computers, the ratio of the former’s sales to the latter is at its lowest since 1997. What we’re to understand from this situation is that there are around 16 PC computers sold- that’s every other kind of computer you can think of for the home or business, essentially – for every one Mac sold. Those are current day numbers. Compare that to 2004 when that number was closer to 50 to 1 and you’ll see the big difference right away – did you see this coming?

Breaking this chart down to the United States, it’s a lot closer to an amazing 3 to 1 ratio as Apple’s main focus strikes true in its home country. What’s most interesting though is Asymco’s several charts in one, one of them also including the iPad in with the Macs. If the iPad is considered part of Apple’s computer sales, you’ve got a whole lot smaller a gap between PC and Apple computer sales without a doubt.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, Apple sold 4.9 million laptops and desktops. In Q4 of 2010 Apple sold 3.9 million laptops and desktops, and in Q4 of 2009 they sold 3 million. Of course these numbers can be attributed not only to struggling PC makers in general, but to Apple’s massively successful launch of several products in the past few years such as the iPhone, the iPad, and the MacBook Air.

Even when the mobile products aren’t counted in the big chart, Asymco shows plainly that Apple is not only ramping up, they’re pushing the PC world down as they do it. Check the timeline below for more Asymco analysis action!

Sales ratio of PCs versus Macs hits levels not seen since 1985

Apple and Microsoft have been fighting it out in the PC industry since the early 80s. Back in 1984, the two companies were on more equal footing when it came to the sales of the individual operating systems on computers. Things changed over the 80s into the early 90s as the ratio between PCs sold versus the number of Macs sold hovered around 15 times as many PCs until around 1997.

In 1997, the number of PCs sold versus Mac computers sold surged to nearly 30 times as many PCs. That number continued to grow through 2004 where Microsoft had nearly 60 times as many PCs sold versus Apple’s Mac computer. 2004 was in when the Mac computer began growing significantly in popularity, and the ratio started to decline for PCs rather quickly.

By 2005, the ratio was under 45 times as many PCs sold versus Macs and continued to decline through 2011 when the ratio was nearly identical to what was seen in 1985 at roughly 17 times as many PCs sold versus Macs. Assuming the trend of increasing Mac sales continues over the next few years we could see the ratio of PCs versus Macs match what it was back in 1984 or even go lower. The chart above comes from the research firm Asymco and illustrates the rise and fall very well. This chart only includes Mac computers, iPads and iPhones are not included according to the source.

The iPhone MacPro Case: 3D-Print Yours for Free!

Well, it probably won’t be free for most of us who don’t have our own 3D printers, but still this is a great-looking case, perfect for all of the Apple fanboys who just love the Mac Pro. Heck, who wouldn’t want to have a Mac Pro they can stick in their pocket?

The iPhone 4/4S MacPro case takes the front of the Mac Pro and fits it onto the back of your iPhone. The design was created to maintain the integrity behind Apple’s design philosophy. I have to say as an iPhone case, this looks pretty awesome.

The designer Cinemo recommends 3D-printing this baby on Polished White Strong & Flexible (Nylon), but Polished Alumide would look cool as well. You can get yours directly through Shapeways if you don’t have a 3D printer for about $30(USD).

New Mac OS X malware discovered

Costin Raiu of Kaspersky Labs said that they were able to “intercept” the new advanced persistent threat or ATP using a new MacOS X backdoor variant targeted at Uyghur activists. Uyghur are a Turkic ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia. On Monday this week, a group of Uyghur activists were reportedly beaten up by the Chinese police forces while holding a peaceful demonstration. (more…)
