Apple announces 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display: 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, Thunderbolt and HDMI starting at $1,699

Apple announces 13inch MacBook Pro with Retina display 2,560 x 1,600 resolution, Thunderbolt and HDMI starting at $1,699

If the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display was feeling lonely up there on its high-resolution pedestal, it needn’t any longer. As expected, Apple just announced a 13-inch version to keep it company. The 2,560 x 1,600 resolution means that 13-inch screen offers a ppi of 232, marginally more than its larger brother’s 226. As well as that lovely new display, there’s a pair of Thunderbolt ports, and a full-size HDMI port to let you make good use of it with, as well as a pair of USB 3s. While this might not be the primary focus of the day, it will definitely be one of the more hotly anticipated reveals from the company’s San Jose event this afternoon. The base model will run you $1,699 and comes with a 2.5GHz i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of flash memory. At the top end you can expect 768GB hard drive, atop a Core i7. And, like last time, to top it all off, all the new goodies come in a slimmer, desire-stoking design — weighing a whole pound less than the 2011 13-incher and at just 0.75-inches thick, 20 percent thinner. Already full of want? Then don’t hang around, as it ships today! In the meantime, keep your retinas locked right here for our hands on.

13-inch Retina MacBook Pro build options leaked

Today at the Apple event that’s going to take place starting at 10AM PST there will more than likely be an iPad mini to be pumped about, but before then, the MacBook Pro with Retina display at 13-inches must be shown – and it’s leaked. This leak comes from 9to5Mac where they’ve got essentially the full run-down of the models that will be available later today. That’s another unconfirmed factoid in this situation, mind you, that the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display will indeed be up for sale by the end of the day online.

This update to the MacBook Pro with Retina display line will have at least three different iterations, each of them with different amounts of Flash storage. The processor speed will remain constant across the two lower models, while the third will have the only processor boost. This update works with many of the same hardware upgrades that the 15-inch version has, but we’ll have to wait on the full run-down from Apple.

• 2.5 GHz, 128GB of Flash storage, 8GB of RAM
• 2.5 GHz, 256 GB of Flash storage, 8GB of RAM
• 2.9 GHz, 512GB of Flash storage, 8GB of RAM

These three models will be available for order right after the event is complete and we’ll be grabbing the full specifications right as they’re dropped by Apple. Stay tuned to our Apple portal for all the hot action, and don’t forget to check out our full Retina display-toting MacBook Pro review right this minute – that’s the larger version, mind you.

Retina Display 13-inch MacBook Pro Appears on Google Before Today’s Apple Event

If Google’s web crawlers are correct, there will be a new Retina display 13-inch MacBook Pro announced today. The Apple Store is currently down, so we can’t follow the link, but a Google search for “13-inch macbook pro” returns results at the official Apple site referring to the new model. More »

New Apple TV Events channel will stream the special event later today

If you haven’t already bookmarked our liveblog (you should get right on that), Apple‘s revealed that it will resume broadcasting its events –starting today. Appearing alongside a new events channel on Apple TV, we get a brief mention of today’s conference in San Jose. But until it kicks off at 10AM PT, you can kill some time by watching Apple’s back-catalog of events, which are ready to view on the new channel.

Update: Better still, you can also hit up Apple’s events site to stream it in your browser of choice Safari on OS X 10.6 or later.

Retina 13-inch MacBook Pro pricing tipped at $1699

The folks at Apple have been tipped to be bringing on the 13-inch version of their lovely Retina-quality display-toting MacBook Pro soon, and with a price tag that jumps $500 over the non-Retina version of the device. The 2,560 x 1,600 pixel display on this device was reported as having started production earlier this year – in August, to be precise – and the announcement of the notebook will quite likely be appearing at the Apple event coming up on the 23rd (next week.) This notebook will almost certainly have the same specification upgrades that the Retina MacBook Pro had in its original iteration as well.

This new MacBook Pro will be significantly thinner than its predecessor. It’ll have some downward and outward-facing head vents and will be working with a Thunderbolt port, of course. You’ll be working with USB 3.0 (one or two ports, we shall see) and a full-sized HDMI port as well. This version of the MacBook Pro will be working with the newest version of the power cord that Apple presents as as the most advanced and physically sensible version yet.

You’ve also got a full-sized SD card reader and a headphone jack – and remember, all of this information comes from the look we’ve had at the MacBook Pro with Retina display we’ve already had a look at – all 15 inches of display that it is. This device has a whole new fan system inside, it’s got a whole new upgraded processor under the hood, and some lovely NVIDIA GeForce action for graphics, too. Benchmarks on the 15-inch version we’ve reviewed already showed the newer version to out-do the older version by a significant margin in several areas.

The battery time will be the same as the previous model, the design will replicate the 15-inch model, and the unit will more than likely be up for sale well in advance of the holiday season. Have a peek at our recent posts regarding this unit in the timeline below and feel free to bet on it being shown off next week. Join us on the 23rd to see how it all goes down, we’ll be covering the Apple event live!

Retina MacBook Pro: The Best Worst Laptop I’ve Ever Owned [Apple]

A couple of months ago, I had a life-altering experience: I bought a new iPad. I use the term “life-altering experience” because before that day, I was a staunch opponent of all things Apple. I was a devout Linux and Android devotee, and I only really used Windows because I had to, and because I would never, ever be caught dead using a MacBook. I only bought the iPad because I needed a retina device to use for testing. At least that was my intention. More »

IRL: Nuu SoftKey, MacBook Air and Thermaltake’s eSports Cyclone Edition gaming mouse

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Welcome back! This week in real-life adventures with gadgetry, Sharif recommends an $80 gaming mouse and Dan pleads with you all not to buy a certain keyboard case for the iPad. As for Philip, he just purchased his first Apple product after years of buying Windows laptops and Zune players, which means he’s got a little explaining to do.

Apple, other thin laptop makers pass latest round of EPEAT tests after summer mini-drama

MacBook Air 13-inch front view with grass wallpaper

Apple gave eco-friendly computer fans a brief jolt this July after it backed out of EPEAT certification, only to restore most devices just days later. While we can’t say we’re completely shocked at the follow-up, EPEAT has confirmed that at least one “ultra-thin” laptop from Apple has just cleared the verification process. The as yet unnamed system is more likely to be a Mac that had already earned the recycling-friendly rating in the past, such as the MacBook Air, rather than a sudden turnaround for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The look wasn’t exclusively devoted to the Mac side, though — EPEAT cleared Apple’s computer as part of a wider test that also greenlit extra-thin portables from Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba. We’ve reached out to get a more definitive list, but the approvals should ease the minds of those worried that ever-slimmer laptops are forcing us to give up our green efforts.
