The Most Perfect Lego Recreation of the Original Macintosh Humanly Possible

You’ve seen out good friend Power Pig’s work around Giz before, but he’s totally outdone himself here. This is his Mona Lisa. (PUN. THAT WAS A PUN.) It’s an absolutely perfect recreation of the original Mac, exactly as it was pictured in that first ad. More »

What American Macintosh Factories Looked Like Last Time Apple Built Them Here

Tim Cook laid some pretty exciting news on us today, saying that an entire Mac line would be manufactured in the US starting next year (some iMacs are already assembled here). But time was, that was just ho-hum standard for all Macs, when they were made in Fremont, California. More »

Mac Mini Review: Apple’s Tiny Computer Is Finally Worth Your Time

The Mac Mini has always been that runt you might buy if you couldn’t afford any other Apple computer. Which is to say: it was the Apple computer you bought when you should’ve picked up a budget Dell or something. No longer. The 2012 model is a fantastic, affordable, and small. More »

Mac Mini Apple ][ Disk Drive Hits the Auction Block

Remember the Mac Mini that was modded into an old Apple ][ Disk Drive a couple of years back? Well, the modder behind the build has now put it up for sale on eBay, to make room for other projects.

It only has a 1.5Ghz Core Solo CPU and 2GB of RAM, so it’s not the latest and greatest in Mac Mini tech, but on the other hand it’s way more powerful than the 1978 floppy drive upon which it is based. My favorite part of the mod has always been the slot-loading DVD drive that’s perfectly aligned with the old floppy disk slot.

Modder Charles Mangin has listed the 5-1/4″ floppy drive cum Mac Mini with a starting bid of $500(USD), but if you absolutely must have it, there’s a Buy-it-Now price of $1000.

Never-Before Seen 1983 Mac Commercial Discovered [Video]

Software wizard Andy Hertzfeld— one of the geniuses behind the original Apple Macintosh—found these rare interviews from an original Macintosh commercial that was never aired. It reminds me of the now-classic product intro infomercials made popular during the Second Coming of Steve Jobs. More »

Apple retires Lion from Mac App Store, there’s a new king in town

Cue the video of 10.7 walking off into the sunset. Today is Mountain Lion day, and with the arrival of the new operating system comes the departure of its predecessor. Clicking the link for Lion will bring up a “The item you’ve requested is not currently available” error message in the Mac App Store. Mountain Lion hits the Mac App Store, is one $20 credit card deduction away

You’ve read (or closely skimmed) the review, you’ve watched the video — now it’s time to fire up your downloading finger and see for yourself. The latest version of Apple OS X just hit the Mac App Store, carrying a a modest $20 price tag. Of course, this round is download-only, so if you want to get your grubby paws on the desktop version of AirPlay Monitoring, Messages, Share Sheets and the rest of those 200+ features, this is the only way to do it.

Update: Looks like the big cat is “Temporarily Unavailable” for download. We’ll let you know when that’s not the case.

Update: Everything seems to be fine now. Download away.

Microsoft did quite a decent job of keeping us entertained with yesterday’s unveiling of its most recent Office package and all of its promising integration with SkyDrive. Still, Redmond left out any mention of how the cloud service would play out for OS X users working on Office 2011 for Mac. Well, according to The Verge, Microsoft’s informed the site an update that’d bring some of the features introduced in Office 2013 to the Mac crowd is indeed in the works. The SkyDrive refresh is said to be coming at the same time as the official launch of the 2013 Office bundle, which means you’ll have to stick with your current workflow at least for a few more months.
