Everybody’s MacBook breaks. At some point or another, the hard drive will shudder to a stop; the display hinge won’t hold up anymore; the logic board will cease to function. It’s only a matter of time. Fortunately, you can fix most of it yourself. Here’s how.
How to Set Up a PC, the Right Way
Posted in: Today's ChiliAll expecting parents have read What to Expect When You’re Expecting, because when that little bundle of joy drops out of mommy, you’d better be ready with lots of paper towels and a whole lot of specialized knowledge about what to do from that moment forward. Though it’s not quite as messy (or scary), setting up a new PC requires a similar sort of informed approach if you want to raise it properly from the moment it squirts out of the Fedex truck and into your life.
Tomorrow’s barbeque is going to be epic, a cookout for the ages. But first you’ll need to make sure your grill is up to the task. Here’s how to turn your fire pit up to 11 in time for the 4th.
We know playing online multiplayer or being able to shop on your favorite video game console’s marketplace is something we all like to do on a regular basis, but there comes a time in every game console’s life where it just needs to unwind and have some time to itself in order to get itself ready for days, weeks and months of regular service.
Today, Sony’s PSN will be taken down for a good chunk of the day starting at 11:00 a.m. ET to 10:00 p.m. ET for a scheduled maintenance, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to enjoy some Black Ops II multiplayer if you were hoping for some post-work shenanigans. Sony says if you’ve connected to the PlayStation Network within the past few days, you shouldn’t experience an outage, that is, unless you do experience an outage, then you’ll be out of luck for the rest of the day like the rest of us.
On days like this, it’s best to think of alternatives, like playing single-player games. If you absolutely need to play some kind of multiplayer game today, might we suggest a good board game?

Large Hadron Collider stops for two years of tune-ups, goes out on a high note (video)
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe’ve long known that the Large Hadron Collider would need to take a break, but that doesn’t take the edge off of the moment itself: as of Valentine’s Day, the particle accelerator has conducted its last test for the next two years. The giant research ring will undergo sweeping repairs and upgrades that should should give it the superconducting connectors needed to hit the originally planned 14TeV of combined collision energy, versus the 8TeV it’s been limited to almost since the beginning. CERN’s machine arguably earned the downtime. After a rough start, it went on to produce rafts of collision data and healthy evidence of the elusive Higgs boson. If you’re still down, think of the hiatus as doing us a favor — it postpones any world-ending disasters until around 2015.

Potholes are not a joke. They get in your way, damage your car and make you spill a Big Gulp’s worth of Grape Fanta on your already-dingy upholstered seats. But new research shows that Google Street View may be all municipalities need to correct the problem. More »
iFixit produces repair manual for MacBook Pro with Retina display, tests DIY’s limits
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhile we’ve been fans of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, iFixit hasn’t been so keen — a company based around DIY repairs isn’t fond of a system where most components are glued or soldered into place. That hasn’t stopped the team from developing a repair manual for those who want to give maintenance a try. A total of 16 guides show us how to disassemble or remove those parts that stand a realistic chance of leaving the system unscathed. While that does include some key components, iFixit continues to fly some caution flags: getting to one part often requires taking apart others, and removing the battery carries the very real possibility of permanent damage. If you’d still prefer to upgrade the SSD yourself (when an option) than pay Apple more for a custom order, there’s now a helping hand for your thriftiness.
