Google Street View Explores Venice Italy

I’ve always found it curious that the entire city of Venice, Italy is built on the water. The way to get around much of the city is by boat, and the main thoroughfares are canals between different buildings and walkways. As close as I’ve ever gotten to exploring Venice, Italy is watching James Bond chase bad guys around the city.

If you want to explore Venice, but can’t afford the airfare, Google has announced that its Street View imagery is now available for all of the canals and walkways of Venice. To grab the Street View imagery, Google workers used their Trekker Backpack and covered 265 miles on foot and 114 miles by boat.

Google says that it covered all the major attractions in Venice and also covered some of the lesser-known features including the synagogue of the first Jewish Ghetto and the Devil’s Bridge on Torcello Island. Google has even offered up a behind-the-scenes video showing how it captured some of its Street New footage in Venice. This is way cooler than those Street View images of CERN and the Large Hadron Collider.

Pokémon X/Y Creature Map: Catchtography

Redditor Bobdor made a very useful map that lists the Pokémon available in Pokémon X/Y based on where you can catch them. Instead of selling or even asking donations for the map, Bobdor chose to share it with all of us for free. That’s the spirit of Kalos at work. Depending on what you want to get from the games, the map could either be a minor or a major spoiler. I think it’s an essential cheat sheet, much like the type chart.

Aside from organizing the creatures by locale, Bobdor also included a list of Pokémon that you can only obtain through evolution or Friend Safari. The only major omission in Bobdor’s map is the list of unobtainable Pokémon that you can only have in Pokémon X/Y if you already got them in previous Pokémon games, but again Bobdor has done more than enough.

Ready to catch ‘em all? You can download Bobdor’s map as a PNG file or as a PDF file. Redditor Thorium also setup an online version of the map if for some reason you don’t want to keep a copy of it. Forget about Goomy, Honedge and Hawlucha; we should be making Bobdor memes and fan art.

Grand Theft Auto 3 Map App for Google Glass: OK Glass, Take Me to Staunton Island

One of the most basic features of Google Glass is its ability to display a map. The folks behind that feature probably didn’t think people would use the wearable computer to navigate virtual worlds though. App developer Mike DiGiovanni is working on an app for Glass that displays a real-time GPS map of his location in Grand Theft Auto 3 as he’s playing. It’s redundant, but it looks really cool.

Mike hasn’t provided a detailed explanation of how he made the app, but he said on Google+ that he’s considering sharing the app once he’s polished it. Speaking with Examiner, Mike also said he wants to make more apps for games, citing a rearview mirror for Mario Kart or a recreation of the slick menu interface from Dead Space. The tiny display on Glass may also be great for showing data that’s not meant to be seen by other players.

The videogame applications for Glass are very interesting, but I think gamers would also love to see video game interfaces in real life for kicks. For example, let’s flip Mike’s app and have a GTA skin for Google Maps. Or maybe pair Glass with a sensor and have a life bar indicating your stamina. Or perhaps have quest markers over important landmarks and people.

What the Military Issue Rifle Is in Each Country of the World

Different strokes, different folks. Different guns, different countries. Here’s a map showing the military issue rifle for each country in the world. You’ll see familiar M4s, AK-47s, AK-74s, some M16s and tinkles of other weaponry. Judging by the map’s choice of colors, it seems to group weapons that are of a similar family together by color.

86,000 square miles of Great Britain meticulously recreated in Minecraft

86,000 square miles of Great Britain meticulously recreated in Minecraft

There are those with free time, and then there’s Joseph Braybrook. This fine bloke managed to recreate some 86,000 square miles of Great Britain within the Minecraft universe, and moreover, it took but a fortnight to concoct. Further justifying his work as more than goofing off, he used Ordnance Survey terrain data in the world’s construction, leading Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, to proclaim the following: “We think we may have created the largest Minecraft world ever built based on real-world data.” The new universe contains over 22 billion Minecraft blocks, and once players have downloaded the 3.6GB file, they’re free to build at will. Just don’t go planting any US flags — that’s just downright rude.
