Mars One, the program that is planning to create a human settlement on Mars by 2024, has received over 200,000 applications of Earthlings who are interested in leaving their home planet forever by taking a one-way ticket to Mars. This short documentary examines a few of those people’s motivation to leave everything behind.
To send man to the moon? Pffft, that was one of the great achievement of mankind in the 20th century, but the 21st century – we’re looking farther and farther away. Enter Mars One, a privately-funded company that intends to send humans to colonize the Red Planet by the time 2025 rolls around. Such an undertaking is more or less a one way trip, but it has seen quite an enthusiastic response, with more than 200,000 people signing up already to date. Mars One, however, must have been disappointed with the numbers since they were looking forward to at least 2,000,000 applicants. Still, there is a different plan that is being prepared by Mars One, that is, to launch an unmanned lander to the surface of Mars by the time 2018 rolls around.
This unmanned lander will be working in tandem with a geostationary satellite, where it will be able to provide the public with a live feed from the surface of Mars. It will take several years after that for the colonists to arrive if all goes well, such a live connection would be able to show those of us on earth just how life on Mars would be like. Another reality show that is set to experience high ratings, except that it will be a setting that takes place far, far away from the comforts of our living room.

Right now, there are dozens of theoretical proposals for how humans could eventually populate Mars (or the Moon), each as crazy as the next: Space elevator. Inflatables. Giant 3D printer. But there’s something wonderful about watching these zany concepts emerge, each with its own unique logic. The latest? A plan to create cave-like dwellings for the one-way astronauts aboard Mars One.

Posted in: Today's ChiliIs life on earth so bad, that you would want to make a quick break for it and head off to the Red Planet? If you have answered in the affirmative, think it not that you are some sort of weirdo, as there is a growing number of folks – numbering more than 100,000 already, who have applied with the Mars One project, where they would leave earth permanently and help to colonize Mars. CNN reported that more than 100,000 people have already sent in their applications to Mars One. Mars One happens to be an organization that intends to establish a permanent human colony by the year 2023, and it seems that the dateline is way too close for comfort (to me, at least).
Mars One intends to send a few groups of four people each in order to create a human presence on Mars, but they will have to be permanent residents there, on a one way ticket. CNN quoted Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp, “There is also a very large number of people who are still working on their profile, so either they have decided not to pay the application fee or they are still making their video or they’re still filling out the questionnaire or their resume. So the people that you can see online are only the ones that have finished and who have set their profiles as public.” Hmmm, the gene pool is going to be really limited there though in the beginning, don’t you think so?
