Marshall Stanmore Speaker Review: Rock and Roll!

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the privilege of having my hands on one of the coolest looking Bluetooth speakers ever made, the Marshall Stanmore. But just because this speaker looks like a Marshall amp, does it sound good too? Well, the answer is a resounding “yes.”

For starters, the Stanmore just looks awesome, aping its bigger brethren, the iconic Marshall amplifiers used by musicians around the world. That in and of itself makes the Stanmore a speaker you want to show off – a real conversation piece. But ultimately, a speaker’s worth is judged by its sound, and the Stanmore doesn’t disappoint.

Inside of the substantial 11 pound enclosure are a pair of 3/4″ dome tweeters and a 5-1/4″ woofer, which are driven by 80 watts of amplification. This combination produces more than enough volume to fill a large room. In fact, I placed the Stanmore in the middle of my first floor – about a 1000 sq. ft. space – and I was able to enjoy my tunes throughout the entire floor.

I threw a wide variety of musical genres at the Stanmore, from electronic to jazz to classical to rap, and it handled them all with aplomb. With volume cranked to a 100%, there’s no perceptible distortion, though it’s unlikely you’ll need to drive the Stanmore at such ear-splitting levels. Thankfully, the speaker also produces clean, well-separated sound at low volume levels too. I was also very pleasantly surprised at the width of the soundstage that came out of its 13.7-inch-wide enclosure. A bass port on the rear helps keep the low end tight and thumpy, but never overbearing. For extended low end boom, you can place the rear of the speaker against a wall.

In addition to offering up tremendous sound, the Stanmore includes some features seldom found on Bluetooth speakers, including bass and treble controls, and multiple auxiliary inputs. In addition to RCA and 3.5mm analog inputs, you get a digital optical input as well, which makes the Stanmore a possible choice for living room use with media players and cable boxes. Keep in mind that the optical input only works when the output is set to PCM stereo.

The only I did encounter was the speaker’s relatively limited Bluetooth range. When using my iPhone 5 as a source, Bluetooth signals started to drop out around 20 feet from the speaker. This isn’t dramatically worse than other Bluetooth speakers I’ve used, but it’s not the best either. That said, if you leave your smartphone sitting near the speaker, it’s brilliant, but don’t expect to walk far away with your audio source in your pocket. I’d love it if Marshall had included Wi-Fi/AirPlay capability, but alas they didn’t.

Overall, the Marshall Stanmore rocks. It pushes out an impressive amount of crystal clear sound from a small enclosure that will fit neatly onto your bookshelf or table. Priced at $400(USD), it’s not a low-end speaker by any means, but you get what you pay for.

Marshall Minor FX In-Ear Headphones offers quality audio without being obvious

marshall-minorI know that I have mentioned before that wearing a pair of over-ear headphones is a surefire way of telling the world to leave you alone, you might not want to be too much of an introvert, which is why you can always wear a pair of in-ear headphones that offer a similar function, but it looks a whole lot less obvious and far more discreet. Of course, quality audio being pumped out through the in-ear headphones is another thing to take into consideration, and this is where the $64.99 Marshall Minor FX In-Ear Headphones come in handy.

Arriving in classic Marshall technology and styling, you will be able to choose from both black and white shades, giving you the privacy of rocking out on your own in style. Marshall has thrown in EarClick technology which will basically ensure the ear pad rests on your outer ear for additional comfort, while you will still be able to retain the ability to hear just what is going on around you should as a safety measure. Cranking it up is not an issue either, as these are able to go all the way to 11, now how about that? Each purchase will also be accompanied by a quartet of sets of interchangeable, silicone ear pads for a customized fit.

Marshall Major FX Headphones offers quality audio with a classic look

marshall-major-fxSerious audiophiles would always want nothing but the very best for their ears, and when it comes to a good pair of headphones, I would like to think that brand loyalty does play a very important role, although there are times when it would be good if one could expand one’s horizons and settle for something different. Who knows? Your ears might just thank you for it. The $99.99 Marshall Major FX Headphones could be your next purchase if you are on the lookout for a new pair of headphones, where it comes with classic Marshall styling and technology for that added touch of class.

It is the ideal pair of headphones for classic rock audiophiles, where it features a 40mm moving coil dynamic speaker to boot for that enhanced audio quality. In-ear headphones would no doubt be a whole lot more subtle, and those who are behind you will tend not to realize that you are wearing a pair, but when it comes to over-ear headphones, they are an obvious enough sign that you should be left alone, and do not want to be disturbed. The Marshall Major FX Headphones would play nice with majority of the devices out there which use a 3.5mm standard audio plug (in-line volume/call control only works with iOS devices), and within the adjustable headband, you will find the words “London England 1962″ inscribed for that added touch of authenticity.

Marshall’s mini Stanmore speakers available now for $400

Marshall’s mini Stanmore speakers: a small footprint for a not-so-tiny price. We first spotted these beauties back at IFA, and now it seems you can finally pick ’em up here in the States. If you’re willing to shell out $400 apiece, that is. The diminutive take on the Hanwell (and, by extension, actual Marshall amps) is available now through the company’s site — well, the black version is, at least. Cream (as pictured above) appears to be sold out for the moment, however. Must be all the Jack Bruce / Eric Clapton fans out there.

Marshall Monitor Headphones Review: Studio Sound for Your Ears

When listening to music or movies on your computer or mobile device, nothing beats a good pair of headphones. And while the market is flush with inexpensive earbuds, they often make me long for better sound quality. I’m happy to say that the Marshall Monitor headphones deliver on that promise.

marshall monitor headphones 2

I’ve been using the Marshall Monitors for the last few days as the primary method of listening to media on my computer and iPhone, and I have to say I’m extremely impressed with these headphones. The first thing you’ll notice about the Marshall Monitors is how good they look. They offer exceptional build quality, with a refined industrial design that echoes the classic Marshall amp design, but updates it.

Nice design touches include lightweight metal construction of the headband and ear swivels, well-padded faux leather earcups, and a padded-faux-leather headband with well-marked brass “L” and “R” channel indicators on the inside. The headphones fold neatly and can be stored in the included carrying pouch.

Another nice touch is that the cord can be detached, and you can choose whether to plug it into the left or right side of the headphones. As an added bonus, whichever 3.5mm jack you leave open can be used to plug in a second set of headphones if you want to share your music. The cord also includes a microphone and remote if you want to use the headphones for making calls.

But why would you waste a good pair of headphones on making phonecalls? These things really shine when listening to music. For starters, I love the excellent sound isolation with their big earcups. Yes, they do put a little pressure on your ears in order to form a tight seal and reduce ambient sound, but I didn’t find them to be uncomfortable, even after wearing them for several hours at a time.

marshall monitor headphones 3

Once I shut out the outside world, I cranked up some tunes, and really let the Marshall Monitors shine. I found their sound reproduction to be excellent, sounding as good as some studio monitors. Listening to Adele’s Right at Rain, I felt like I was standing on stage alongside her, the Hammond organ whirling directly into my ears. To test if they could rock out, I cranked up AC/DC’s You Shook Me All Night Long to 11, and I could feel the drum kit rattling my spine while Brian Johnson’s vocals scorched my eardrums.

There’s none of the overly boomy bass that many over-the-ear headphones have, but trust me, there’s still a solid low end. It’s just clean and accurate. Highs and mids are clean and distortion-free even at the highest volume levels I could throw at them. Marshall rates the 40mm drivers at a 10Hz to 20KHz frequency response range, with a 99dB sensitivity at 100mV@1KHz.

marshall monitor headphones 6

One unique feature Marshall offers are removable filters which attenuate some of the highest tones in the 8KHz to 20KHz range. These filters reduce some of the shrillness that some people might find unpleasant in the higher end of the audible frequency range. Personally, I preferred the sound without the filters in place, and that’s why Marshall gives you a choice. Removing the filters is as easy as popping off the magnetic earcup pads, pulling the filters out, and replacing the earcups.

marshall monitor headphones 4

Overall, I’m very impressed with the sound, styling, portability and build quality of the Marshall Monitor headphones. I guess I’m not surprised that the company behind some of the best concert-grade amplifiers would be capable of carrying across their expertise to personal audio devices.

If you’d like to grab a pair to make your ears happy, they’re available from Marshall’s website for $200(USD).

Look familiar? Yeah, yeah, it’s built in the classic Marshall amp style, but the new Stanmore speaker also has a lot in common with the already announced Hanwell. The big difference? Size. The newly announced speaker is a diminutive take on its older sibling — though it’s not tiny by any means. The speaker’s got a number of inputs: 3.5-millimeter, RCA, Bluetooth and optical audio. It comes in black and cream colors and will run you €400 here in Europe. It’s not cheap, certainly, but man it’s a pretty speaker. %Gallery-slideshow81818%

Marshall Fridge

marshall-fridgeI am quite sure that any musician worth his or her salt would have had heard of the brand name Marshall before, and most of the time, you would be familiar with it in music videos as well as commercials. The Marshall amp can be said to be a mainstay in the musical industry, but for those who have a great love for all things music, and yet want to decorate their home in a tasteful manner, there is the £399.00 Marshall Fridge which will be a surefire conversation starter, no two ways about it.

I guess to call it the “coolest amplifier in the world” would not be stretching the truth at all. Just in case someone comes up to you and compliment you on this bad boy, touting that it looks so real, it is rather difficult to tell the difference from the real thing until you open it, just nod knowingly, as the Marshall Fridge itself is made out from authentic Marshall amp parts. Yes sir, the next time you throw an awesome party, make it even greater with the Marshall Fridge, where all the dials go up to 11 – and I ain’t kidding you on this.
