Marvel Unlimited brings 13,000 comics to iOS for $60 a year

When you’re a real hardcore comic book collector, you don’t often think about the idea of owning every single comic book ever made – but Marvel does. As one of the most well-known and well-read comic brands in the industry for many, many years, Marvel Comics began ushering in the digital age several years ago with digital versions of their illustrated stories on the web – and more recently in mobile apps. Now they’ve brought their ultra-popular unlimited access pass to a 13,000 comic collection – nearly their whole back-catalogue spanning over 70 years – humongous!

unlimteddddd

The difference between this app and the already released Marvel Comics app for iPad is your ability to see new issues. With Marvel Unlimited you’ll be limited to comics as recent as 6 months – for some of the most ravenous storyline addicts, this will be a bit of a boon. If you want to read entire collections of comics long gone, on the other hand, Marvel Unlimited will certainly be right up your alley.

unlimited

The app itself is free from the iTunes App Store and you’ll be able to pick it up for either your iPad or your iPhone – or both, if you’re feeling like reading all the time, no matter what, non-stop. You’ll see both the Marvel Comics app and the Marvel Unlimited app in the store – feel free to pick them both up for more comics action than you can possible handle.

You’ll find that some comics have special ways of walking through their pages while some are much more traditional. If you have a peek at a new (and free) edition of Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll find each tiny panel popping up with speech bubbles depending on who speaks first and which action happens when. If you check out Uncanny X-Men Volume 1, Issue 500, you’ll be able to zoom in on individual panels with a double-tap, the others being blocked by white while you peek.

The most traditional way you’ll see comics added to the fold here is a simple one or two page spread. You can zoom in with a pinch or a pull, but otherwise you’re flat as flat gets. Page turning is flat, there’s no extra 3D morphing going on, nothing like that. It’s a real one or two-page experience, front to back.

With Marvel Unlimited you’ll be paying either $10 a month of $60 USD for a whole year, and you’ll be able to read comics offline and keep what you want just so long as you’re still subscribed. With the Marvel Comics app you’ll be paying whatever you’d normally pay for each issue, and you’ll have access to “Marvel Now” – each time you purchase an issue in the real world, in a real comic shop, you get a download code that lets you grab it digitally as well.

offline

But please, please for the sake of our future generations of comic book fanatics, please put your back issues in sleeves with boards and tape – and don’t smoke! And don’t leave them out in the sun! And don’t let them get damp!

Marvel Unlimited Subscription-based Comic Book Service Comes To iOS

Marvel Unlimited Subscription based Comic Book Service Comes To iOSFor comic book readers, smartphones and tablets have introduced ways to interact with their favorite comic book series without having to go out and buy a new one every time an issue is released. Having all of your comics available to read on your smartphone or tablet devices is certainly a treat, although buying them individually doesn’t make it a cheap hobby.

Marvel is announcing today it’s subscription-based Marvel Unlimited, which offers access to the company’s catalog of over 13,000 published comics that span a period of over 70 years, is now available for iOS. The subscription costs $10 a month or $60 for a yearly subscription, although in order for newer comics to be included in the Marvel Unlimited subscription, it needs to be available for six months, which we know could put a damper on your weekly comic book discussions with your friends at your local Applebees.

Marvel’s original comic book app will continue doing what it does as its purpose is to deliver new comics in a digital format, although we hope one day Marvel decides to bring both apps together into one unstoppable comic book-serving application.

Iron Man 3 theatrical trailer unleashes army of Iron Men

Today is the day we continue the Tony Stark saga with the first full theatrical trailer for Iron Man 3, complete with full views of the main villain, plotline confirmations galore, and a bit of a teaser of what’s sure to be the final battle of the film. This movie contains much contemplation on the part of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark character and some hard decisions made by both he and his associates regarding the defense of the United States of America. To do this, for starters, they’ll be rolling out with Iron Patriot – clad in the stars and stripes of the USA flag on an Iron Man body.

urinfads

With this trailer comes confirmation of Tony Stark facing off against not just the Mandarin, but the United States of America – again, that is. This is a continuation of the idea that the USA – or entities therein – are not seeing Iron Man as a protective force that should be as private as it is with Stark, but as a weapon that should be integrated into the government’s own forces. Lucky for them, it appears as if a flock of Iron Men appear near the end of the trailer.

This trailer features characters we can assume will be played by the same actors as they were in previous installments of the film. The director is new, this meaning we’ll have a bit of a different approach one way or another, but the cast will be rolling out with a bit more solidity between films than we had between Iron Man 1 and 2. Now that we’re heavy into the success of the film series – and have seen several of the Iron Man characters in the collective Avengers film – we can expect the cast to stay largely the same from here on in.

iraea

Meanwhile you’ll be glad to know that the release of Iron Man 3 is still set for May 3rd and will be battling it out with Star Trek Into Darkness without a doubt – that film coming just a couple weeks later into the month. Iron Man 3 is one of several next-generation Marvel Comics films being released in the near future, each of the Avengers grabbing hold of a continuing series well into the next century as well. Stark ahoy!

Doctor Strange and Ant-Man movies confirmed by Marvel Comics president

This week the president of Marvel has confirmed that two characters you, as an average everyday citizen, may have overlooked as a youngster are now headed for “Phase Three” of the Marvel-made (and Disney-owned) major motion picture saga. It’s Ant-Man that’ll be jamming forth with Doctor Strange somewhere in the mix as well. Not that these two fellows will be coming up in the same film necessarily, but that they’re both on the docket without a doubt.

doctor-strange-03-654x341

The confirmation for Ant-Man came back in 2012, technically, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirming again with MTV this week that Ant-Man will only be made if director Edgar Wright can make it. And lucky you, this legendary man behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is indeed signed on for the Ant-Man movie for release in 2014. The Ant-Man movie being the only one of the “3rd” generation of Marvel movies at the moment, Feige was asked what characters would be up next.

rsz_irredeemable_ant-man_vol_1_10_textless-532x355

Confirming two things at once, Feige noted that, “you probably don’t have to look too far to guess” at which characters will be coming in the next wave of films, this referring to the Avengers-specific corner of the Marvel Comics universe. He went on to know that “Doctor Strange, which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them.” He also added a quick note about how “Guardians of the Galaxy” will be just as “totally different from anything else we have [done]” as Doctor Strange will be and as Ant-Man eventually will be as well.

What we’re expecting with Ant-Man and Doctor Strange is a couple of films (or, again, perhaps just one together, no matter how wild that would be), in which we’re in the Marvel Comics Universe, but we’re not necessarily on The Hulk’s doorstep. When each of the new phases of the individual Avengers characters come forth over the next two years and the Avengers 2 movie appears in 2015, we’ll quite likely be seeing both of these characters hinted at, if not seen in their first appearances entirely.

Avengers Initiative Tegra Enhanced Review

Though the Marvel Comics game by the name of Avengers Initiative is indeed available for an elite collection of high-powered Android devices, it’s the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor that’s breaking out the best of the best. The review you’re about to set your eyes on is done on none other than the ASUS Transformer Prime, the first device to sport the Tegra 3 – but chances are you’ll be breaking it out on the super-popular Google Nexus 7 tablet: and lucky you – that device works with a Tegra 3 as well.

This game was introduced for the market the week of Thanksgiving, 2012 – that’s right now, here, at the time of this posting, and here we’ve also got a special promotional price that’s making the download extra enticing. Right now you’ll be able to pick this game up for $4.99 USD – in the future it’s likely to be raised by a buck or two, but for the moment a five-spot will make it yours. It’s developed directly by Marvel Games is ready to not just promote the Avengers movie series, but to be a high-powered game of excellence in and of itself.

Again what you’re looking at in the demo here is the ASUS Transformer Prime, a device that’s more than a few months old but is still one of the most awesome tablets on the market, Tegra 3 and all. This game begins with the Hulk and will be continuing on with updates, special events, and more playable characters and storyline in the future. In other words – this game is set to be a gift that keeps on giving. All “episodic content” updates will be free, mind you – with Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man in the mix for 2013!

Enhancements for NVIDIA Tegra 3-toting devices include improved character textures, slightly more life-like environments, Iso-8 effects (game element with super fun crystal bashing), and realistic clothing – rendering sweetness in-frame! The only thing you might want to be wary of here is the download size – at 1.3 GB, it’s certainly going to be a space-eater you’ll want to think twice about. Otherwise it’s a straight up must-have winner – grab it through the NVIDIA TegraZone right this minute!

Star Wars Episode 7 “can’t get here fast enough”

It’s time for the directors and writers to chime in on the idea that Star Wars Episode 7, that taking place in the storyline after the first 6, will be made and released in 2015. This news came this week concurrently with the fact that George Lucas had sold the entirety of LucasFilm (his own production company) to Disney along with the rights to Star Wars itself. Lucas will remain part of the universe as a creative consultant, and the 7th, 8th, and 9th movies have been confirmed all at once – several big names in the film industry have commented in the short time since this announcement was made.

It was none other than Robert Rodriguez who made the comment about how quickly the film needed to be made. The excitement that many current big-names in directing and writing are feeling is a direct result of them having been draw into the industry originally by the first trilogy of Star Wars films. Rodriguez is certainly of age to remember the explosive nature of the first time Star Wars came into our universe.

“What an amazing world and legacy George Lucas has created — and it needs to continue in capable hands. I do think Disney is the best studio for the job and the fact that they brought in Kathleen Kennedy? I can’t imagine a better scenario. And 2015 can’t get here fast enough.” – Rodriguez

Kathleen Kennedy was up until now second in command at LucasFilm, and she’ll be in charge of operations now once the company is owned by Disney. Director J.J. Abrams had similar feelings about the situation, having once noted that it was difficult to pull Star Trek out into a major motion picture now in the present while Star Wars was still big, saying now that he’s pumped: “Part of me? Thrilled. Part of me? Terrified. Most of me? Thrillified.”

Disney also acquired Marvel Comics back in 2008, and since its acquisition made several films possible: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and The Avengers. Director of Iron Man Jon Favreau spoke up about the situation as well, noting that “The idea of another trilogy that further shrouds the Force in mystery as its secrets are lost to time – that’s extremely compelling. “I want so bad for it to be good. Can you imagine?”

We’ll be waiting too – and SlashGear will be running with no lack of insight on the goings-on inside LucasFilm and Disney as the next three years pass before Star Wars Episode 7 – prepare yourselves, readers!

NOTE: The image at the head of this post is a section of the cover art for Heir to the Empire, one of many possible next-episode storylines that will be followed by the ongoing Star Wars saga. Read it today!

Iron Man 3 Trailer video up in teaser of teaser

You’re a lucky person if you’re looking for a teaser of a teaser for Iron Man 3, because Marvel has just blasted us all directly in the face with 17 seconds of video you’ll never forget. This teaser trailer is a teaser of a teaser – strange as that may be – with visions of a new inverted Iron Man suit, the back of Ben Kingsley’s head, and lots of inception “BWOM” feelings with electronic buzzing blasts in the audio department. Needless to say, this trailer doesn’t exactly tell us a whole lot.

What you will see is the look of this new film, starting with the suit as it appears above. This suit will undoubtedly bring Iron Man some new set of odd powers and will work with the fabulous new abilities (and less some Tony Stark-killing elemental damage) as seen in the Avengers. You’ll also get a very brief glimpse at the new villain here Mandarin – as played by Ben Kingsley.

It’s being hypothesized by the fan underground that Iron Man 3 will include at least one of the Infinity Gems. These gems are all-powerful next-level power-packed artifacts that, when combined, create the Infinity Gauntlet – this ties in with the cut-scene that appears at the end of the Avengers movie. Here in Iron Man 3, we’ll likely lead up in to a set of several other one-off movies with the Avengers on their own, crowned off by another Avengers in a bit over a year.

Pepper Potts appears here again played by Gwyneth Paltrow in a situation that’s obviously causing her a great deal of pain. The gold Iron Man suit can be seen powering up for a blast and flying towards a swarm of flying armors not unlike his own. The whole video fades in and out with black – and it’s so very epic! But it’s only a teaser, and the real deal will be out tomorrow – can’t wait!

Marvel Comics gets Rage of Bahamut game mechanics in “War of Heroes”

Starting on October 11th, 2012, you’ll be able to take command of your favorite Marvel Comics superheroes and villains in a brand new game for both iOS and Android devices. This game is a hero card-based game working with all of your favorite classic heroes like Spider-Man and Captain America and introduces a brand new narrative to the comic-based environment. Here you’ll not be facing just Loki as it was in the Avengers movie just released to digital download at the end of last month, you’ll be diving in with the whole Marvel universe in strides!

The pre-event details include your ability to sign up for updates with your email and a free limited edition Black Widow card for you to start your collection off well before the final app release. This app will have a base set of cards and new character cards and events added on a regular basis. This format allows for a continually evolving gameplay experience – quite similar to what some of you might recognize as the format made popular by the real-life card game Magic: The Gathering.

UPDATE: This game will almost certainly be taking on the same format as the ultra-popular mobile-based card game Rage of Bahamut – exciting stuff!

We’ve yet to see how the mechanics of this Marvel-based game work, but from what we have seen so far, it’s going to be interesting! DeNA’s Mobage is responsible for the development of this game, and it’ll be showing up next at New York Comic Con at the Jacob Jarvits Center in New York City on the 11th of October through the 14th. That’s the same day as launch, of course, so keep your eyes peeled!

Meanwhile you’ll want to check out marvelwarofheroes.com to sign up with your email for information updates, and stick to SlashGear for more information on the game as it approaches. Note that this game is being prepped for both iOS and Android at the same time, this quite likely pointing towards a release on not just smartphones, but tablets as well, right out of the box. Let us know if you plan on joining in on the fun!

ABC S.H.I.E.L.D Series Pilot Being Co-written by Joss Whedon

This is so awesome! When I was growing up, a hot Friday night was watching The Incredible Hulk followed by The Dukes of Hazzard. It’s been a long time since a decent superhero show has been on television, and it looks like ABC is out to remedy that. Reports are coming in that The Avengers/Buffy/Firefly/Dr. Horrible/Angel director Joss Whedon is co-writing a pilot for new superhero TV series.

shield logo

The series is said to be based in The Avengers universe and called S.H.I.E.L.D. The series is said to follow the secret military law enforcement group with Nick Fury at the helm.

Reports indicate that Joss and his brother Jed are writing the pilot for the show along with help from spouse Maurissa Tancharoen. Whedon might even direct the pilot for the series if his schedule allows. Production for the pilot is set to get underway as soon as possible. ABC is also said to be getting a new TV series based on The Hulk ready as well.
