Thor’s Hammer Weighs as Much as 300 Billion Elephants, Says Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson just took the mystery out of a cosmic legend in comics, and somehow made it even cooler. How much does Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor and forged from a collapsing star, actually weigh? Turns out, stars weigh a lot. More »

Iron Man Arc Reactor Pocket Watch: If He Only Had a Heart

If Tony Stark had been born a century or two earlier,  he would have probably skipped the high-tech Arc Reactor and gone with something more like the Tin Woodsman had – a pocket watch heart. This is what that watch would look like. Yeah, basically a pocket watch that matches Iron Man’s armor.
iron man watch
This Iron Man steampunk style pocket watch was made by Adi Simion and even though it may not be able to keep track of time, I know that I would buy one in a heartbeat.

It also reminds me that we need to take some of these superheros and throw them into the Victorian era. Those are the movies that I would like to see. Somebody get on that.

Here’s a Teaser for Iron Man 3’s Super Bowl Ad

Because we’re all just suckers when it comes to anything Marvel, Iron Man and/or Bob Downey (and especially because Iron Man 3 looks so amazing), we can’t help but enjoy watching trailers for… freaking trailers. Iron Man 3 will showcase a new trailer during the Super Bowl so Marvel decided to tease the spot by showing an adrenaline pumping, emotion inducing 15 second teaser that includes some new never before shots. Namely, Don Cheadle as Iron Patriot? [YouTube] More »

Amazon’s LOVEFiLM signs Marvel cartoon deal

Amazon-owned Euro Netflix rival LOVEFiLM continues to ramp up its catalog, inking a deal with Disney UK and Ireland that will see Marvel animated classics such as X-Men and Iron Man go up for instant streaming. The new licensing will see hundreds of cartoon episodes added to the LOVEFiLM line-up, as the company attempts to further narrow the gap between it and arch-nemesis Netflix.

That sense of competition has been fuelled by recent research suggesting that, while LOVEFiLM has the edge in movie content for its European viewers, Netflix is besting it in TV content. The discovery came amid a round of new TV licensing deals for LOVEFiLM, including an agreement with Channel 4 earlier this month that will see titles like Peep Show, Father Ted, and The Inbetweeners added.

Meanwhile, a previous deal with NBCInternational and other content agreements with ABC and BBC Worldwide means the catalog is gradually expanding. Alongside it, there’s an increasing number of devices that support LOVEFiLM access, including the console trinity of Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360, Amazon’s own Kindle Fire and Fire HD tablets, the iPad, and other devices.

LOVEFiLM says shows from the past 50 years featuring Marvel characters will now be made available, with titles including Iron ManThe Incredible HulkFantastic Four, X-Men, and Silver Surfer. Subscriptions are priced from £4.99 per month.

Iron Man Gauntlet Shoots Real Lasers

New from Stark Enterprises: The Iron Man gauntlet. It looks cool on your wrist, compliments your Mark-whatever armor and as a special bonus, it even shoots real lasers. Not wimpy lasers, mind you – lasers that are high-powered and strong enough to burn things and pop balloons.

And let’s face it, that’s what you need to save the world. You never know when an angry clown villain will show up and attack you with his balloon animal army. This full metal gauntlet, runs on 1x 18650 plus 2x 14500 Li Ion cells and has two blue lasers packed in at 1.2W each, plus two 4mW ones for aiming. Check out the gauntlet in action in the video clip below:

Pretty impressive, eh? It was made by Patrick Priebe of Laser-Gadgets. Sadly he isn’t sharing his build plans, but you can watch the video and drool.

Gambit & Rogue T-shirts for You and Your Cherie

The love team of Rémy LeBeau and Anna Marie…Something was one of the most popular couples in mainstream comics, partly because for a long time, Rogue’s power meant they couldn’t make physical contact without Gambit turning into the world’s most charming vegetable. How romantic. How frustrating. How weird. If you’re in a similarly intense relationship, then these tees are for you, mon ami.

I have to admit, Gambit’s shiny and muscular armor looks really silly without his trademark trench coat. But I’d take this T-shirt over a Cyclops one any day, because Cyke is a jerk in the current Marvel world. You can order the Gambit and Rogue T-shirts at ThinkGeek for $20-$22 (USD) each.

Crocheted Magneto Helmet Won’t Protect You from Telepathic Attacks

I’m not sure what’s going on with the Marvel universe right now; the last time I read a comic book with Magneto in it he was taking orders from Cyclops. Whaaaat? I’ll always remember Magneto as the kind of dude who would – and did – rip out a man’s skeleton right out of his body. And that’s why I need this helmet so badly.

Avengers Owls: Give a Hoot and Assemble Already!

We all have our favorite Avengers. Personally, I’ve always liked Iron Man and Thor the best, but after Mark Ruffalo’s take on the green guy this past summer, I’m beginning to like the Hulk again too. Well regardless of which Avenger is your favorite, we can all agree that owls are pretty awesome creatures. So what could be better than Avengers owls?

Artist Morgan Chambers makes cool stuffed owls based on pop culture figures, among them The Avengers. These 7-inch-tall plush superheroes are handmade using eco-felt, and ready to take on all villains who dare to come their way. Okay, so them may not have any actual superpowers, but they will kill them with cuteness – one of the most dastardly weapons known to villainkind.

Oh, and if you’re feeing villainous, you can always go for the Loki owl.

For $35(USD) you can get a single plush owl, or for $95, you can pick your favorite three , and Morgan will make them for you. Since they are handmade, you’ll have to wait about a week per plush for them to be made, but the end result will be worth it. Just tell those supervillains they have to wait.

LEGO Iron Man Mk. VII Concept: Brick Man

A few months ago Mike McCooey wowed the Web with his poseable LEGO Spider-Man. Now he’s back with another poseable LEGO superhero, and with your support, perhaps LEGO can make it an official product. It’s an amazing build of Tony Stark in his Iron Man Mark VII armor.

Mike says that while his Iron Man figure is not as poseable as his Spidey figure, it still has over 50 points of articulation. It also has six independent light bricks: one in his head, chest, one on each head and one on each foot. Iron Man may be more fragile in his bricky suit, but he’s still packing heat. He has wrist-mounted lasers, thigh- and shoulder-mounted missiles and more.

You really should check out Mike’s Flickr page to see the details on this figure. Mike has also setup a LEGO Cuusoo campaign. You know how that works: if his campaign gets 10,000 votes, LEGO will think about making it official. Otherwise LEGO’s not even gonna think about thinking about it.

Netflix signs content deal with Disney

More popular movie titles are coming to Netflix, thanks to a significant deal made with The Walt Disney Company. The deal will give Netflix subscribers movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation, Marvel, and Disneynature. However, the deal actually doesn’t start until 2016 — about three years from now.

The deal will see Disney movies hit Netflix about six months after they come out of theaters, which is about the same timeframe that movies are allowed to broadcast on television. However, “high-profile Disney direct-to-video new releases” will be available for streaming starting next year, and older Disney films like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and Pocahontas, are actually available right now.

Previously, Netflix had been able to stream Disney movies through its deal with cable network Starz, but that deal ended back in February. Since this new deal involves Marvel and Pixar, we should be seeing popular films like Iron Man, Toy Story, and Monsters Inc. However, we’re not sure if the recently-acquired Lucasfilm will be involved in the deal. If so, the upcoming Star Wars film will also show up on Netflix.

While this may seem like big news now, 2016 is extremely far off, which means the industry may change and Netflix’s competition could butt in to create a hellstorm for Netflix, Amazon being one of the biggest threats. However, Starz currently holds the Disney contract through 2015, which is why Netflix won’t get it until 2016, so that deal is definitely secure from other services.
