Marvel launches Avengers Initiative mobile game

Mobile gaming fans are always on the lookout for the next interesting video game to download on their tablets and smartphones. If you’re a fan of Marvel superheroes, a new game has hit the iTunes App Store from Marvel called the Avengers Initiative. The game marks the beginning of Marvel’s first episodic series built exclusively for mobile devices.

The first episode in the series has players playing as the Incredible Hulk. Future episodes in the series will put players in control of other Avengers superheroes. Each additional episode will be free after gamers pay the $6.99 to the purchase the app. The goal of this mobile game for Marvel was to bring console quality graphics and game play to mobile gamers.

The game was developed by Wideload Games and is a gesture-based action game with HD quality graphics according to the developer. The combat was designed for mobile devices and gives players attack and combo controls controlled by swiping fingers. Game play features distinct fighting styles and has special legendary moves available.

The first episode allows players to customize the Hulk with exclusive costumes. Players can unlock new super abilities to upgrade combat stats as well. In the first episode, the Hulk battles bad guys released after some sort of mysterious event called the Pulse. The game is only offered for iOS devices right now, but it will be coming for Android users with enhancements for Tegra 3 devices.

Hulk Computer Casemod is Simply Smashing

Hulk fans are sure to love this awesome radioactive green computer case mod. Even the Hulk himself would just stand before it in amazement rather than try to smash it and he smashes everything.

In fact, I dare say that it would bring a tear to the Hulk’s eye. It features a whole mess of green cold cathodes, action figures doing various things, external hardware, and cooling equipment that glows and looks like radioactive ooze. It’s completely over the top, but in a good way.

This unbelievable piece of art was the highlight of this year’s ‘bring your own computer’ at QUAKECON 2012. You can see why. It was built by Derrick Johnson who knows that it is better to build and not destroy like the Hulk. Check out the gallery over on ScrewAttack for more great pictures.

ABC S.H.I.E.L.D Series Pilot Being Co-written by Joss Whedon

This is so awesome! When I was growing up, a hot Friday night was watching The Incredible Hulk followed by The Dukes of Hazzard. It’s been a long time since a decent superhero show has been on television, and it looks like ABC is out to remedy that. Reports are coming in that The Avengers/Buffy/Firefly/Dr. Horrible/Angel director Joss Whedon is co-writing a pilot for new superhero TV series.

The series is said to be based in The Avengers universe and called S.H.I.E.L.D. The series is said to follow the secret military law enforcement group with Nick Fury at the helm.

Reports indicate that Joss and his brother Jed are writing the pilot for the show along with help from spouse Maurissa Tancharoen. Whedon might even direct the pilot for the series if his schedule allows. Production for the pilot is set to get underway as soon as possible. ABC is also said to be getting a new TV series based on The Hulk ready as well.

CatVengers: A Movie I’d Pay $15 to See

Now before you get all mad at me for saying that I was kind of disappointed in the big noisy mess that was The Avengers, I must mention that I was battling the brain-bending side effects of a new medicine, combined with the headache inducing 3D glasses and an IMAX screen on the day I saw it, so maybe I need to give it another chance when it comes out on Blu-ray. But for now, here’s a film that I’d most definitely go see in the mean time.

catvengers 1

Yes, those are cats – dressed up as Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and The Hulk. Well The Hulk isn’t exactly dressed – hes’ more like a big naked green cat. But that doesn’t make the Cat Avengers any less awesome. I love how Captain (or is it Cattail?) America looks kind of spooked by Thor’s electric hammer. Though I was hoping to see a rat dressed as Loki.

This hilarious digital painting comes from the mind of Alana McCarthy of GeekyPet, and is available as a 10″ x 8″ digital print over on Etsy for about $15(USD). While you’re over there, be sure to check out Alana’s other geeky animal creations, including Batcat, Jabba the Cat and Captain Jean-Mewc Piccat (I made that name up but I thought it fit.)

Kid Builds Life-Size LEGO Iron Man

Remember Evan Bacon, the kid who built the life-size Batman LEGO? Well the now 14-year-old LEGO fanatic is back with another sizeable superhero creation. This time, Evan crossed over from the DC Comics to the Marvel universe, creating a life-size model of Iron Man, entirely from LEGO bricks.

Evan says the 6-foot-tall model is comprised of about 18,000 individual LEGO bricks. Iron Man’s eyes, arc reactor and palm even light up. The sculpture was on display at the recent Brick Fiesta 2012 in Austin, TX.

All told, the model weighs in at about 80 pounds, and won the People’s Choice Award at Brick Fiesta. Great job, Evan! I can only hope you’re planning on building all of the Avengers and Justice League over time. Of course, you might just go broke buying LEGO bricks.

The Avengers 2 Release Date Revealed

The superhero flick The Avengers was one of the biggest earning films of the year and proved so popular planning for a sequel commenced right away (if not before the movie was released.) If you’re a big fan of superhero movies, you’ll be excited to hear that the launch date for the sequel to The Avengers has been offered up.

It appears that the film is simply called The Avengers 2, and Joss Whedon will be returning to direct this one. The release date that has surfaced for now is May 1, 2015. Sadly, that’s nearly three years from now. I honestly thought the movie would come out as quickly as the studio could turn around another film. I guess one of the reasons it’s going to take a while for the film the hit theaters is that Iron Man star Robert Downey, Jr. is working hard on another blockbuster superhero film right now, and is currently shooting Iron Man 3.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait as long to get our Marvel fix, as Iron Man 3′s expected launch date is May 3, 2013.

Marvel and Fox Haggle over Rights to Daredevil and Silver Surfer

I think we can be honest in that one of the worst superhero flicks to be based on a comic book hero ever was Daredevil. As cool as the movie could’ve been, the finished product we saw in the 2003 film was rather cheesy. With so many superhero franchises being rebooted recently, you may be wondering if someone’s going to try their hand again at Daredevil and the answer is “yes.”

Apparently, Fox has had the rights to make another Daredevil film for while. The holdup was that the chosen director, David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Hard Candy), dropped out of the project and Fox had to find a new director. Fox has now lined up director Joe Carnahan (Narc, The Grey). However, if Fox doesn’t start filming by October 10 rights to the character will revert to Marvel.

That would mean Marvel could sell the rights to another film company or do what it wanted with Daredevil. According to reports, Marvel is willing to let Fox hold onto the rights to Daredevil for a bit longer with one condition. Marvel, and its owner Disney, wants access to characters that Fox had previously licensed including Silver Surfer and Galactus. Legal discussions aside, we can only hope that with Carnahan’s dark and brooding style that his Daredevil actually gets made.

Plextor M5 Pro bulges SSD envelope with 94K IOPS and 540MB/s

Plextor M5 Pro SSD

Plextor’s newly launched M5 Pro is angling to be the top dot on the SATA III SSD spec charts — and looks like it will mostly succeed. The Marvell Monet controller lets the unit hit a continuous 540 MB/s read and 450 MB/s write speeds for the larger models, as well as a hefty 94,000 read and 86,000 write IOPS. Those figures would put it ahead of or alongside most of its competitors except in steady write speeds, but Plextor claims that hustle is not the model’s only trick. It also makes use of “True Speed” tech to minimize performance drops with age, uses 128-bit error correction to eliminate data inaccuracy and offers 256-bit full-drive encryption. The 128GB, 256GB or 512GB drives will be available mid-August for prices that have yet to be determined, but it’s likely to be well north of its budget namesake, the M5S. You’ll find the full PR after the break.

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe Blu-ray set gets its own trailer (video)

If you didn’t head down to Comic-Con and check out the Marvel Cinematic Universe Blu-ray boxed set and its special case for yourself, Marvel has put together a video trailer. From the S.H.I.E.L.D. briefcase itself to the custom artwork and tesseract replica awaiting within. Usually, trailers are reserved for movies themselves, and not just the packaging, but maybe this is worth the exception. Check out the video and let us know if you’re convinced, or if some combination of the $140 price and The Dark Knight Rises arriving in theaters makes it a pass.
