LEGO Xenogears Concept: Weltall Order

As I’ve mentioned before, Xenogears is one of my favorite games. So I was so excited when I heard that someone had proposed LEGO versions of the PlayStation classic’s mecha. Sadly, Diego Cabrera submitted his proposal on LEGO Cuusoo back in 2012 and it still doesn’t have the minimum 10,000 votes.

I don’t know if Diego edited his proposal since he first created it, but as of this writing all you can see on Cuusoo is the image of Xenogears, the final form of Fei’s Weltall. But Video Game Stuffs was able to save Diego’s LEGO models of the other Gears. I’m not sure if these are all he made – the other heroes’ Gears are missing, such as the awesomely bulky Siebzehn – but right now these images are all we have.

I don’t know if Cuusoo places an expiration date on proposals, although I was still able to place my vote for Diego’s proposal. I do know that Xenogears is no Back to the Future, Ghostbusters or Minecraft. But if you’re a fellow fan of the game it wouldn’t hurt to show your support for this awesome concept. I hope Diego updates or resubmits his proposal now that it’s getting a new wave of attention.

Poke’Mecha: In Soviet LEGO, Pokémon Carry You

A few months ago we saw a LEGO robot Charizard. Here’s an evolution of that idea, courtesy of Flickr member Stormbringer. His Poke’Mecha series depict the famous video game critters as large LEGO robots piloted by minifigs. You can’t pocket these monsters.

Stormbringer said that Blastoise is the first and the sturdiest of the three toys. Venusaur took him the longest to build because he had trouble finding azure-colored parts. Charizard is his favorite of the three because it was a challenging build, particularly its head and wings.

Summon your mechabrowser and head to Stormbringer’s Flickr page for more on his Poke’Mecha. He said he’s planning on building more of these, which is great news, but I hope he takes his project to its only logical conclusion: make the Poke’Mecha combine to form a larger robot monster. Or at least a huge Pokéball.

Pacific Rim Crimson Typhoon Cosplay Isn’t Worn by Triplets

Peter Kokis aka Brooklyn Robot Works made a shiny costume based on Crimson Typhoon, China’s ace against the kaiju in Pacific Rim. The costume is far from perfect – the proportions and even the colors are off, and it’s missing its trademark blades – but it’s still an impressive piece, especially when you find out what it’s made of.

Peter calls his costume the Brooklyn Typhoon. It took him a total of 550 hours to build. It probably takes him as long to walk a mile in it because it weighs 152lb. Peter says that his mini-jaeger is made from an assortment of everyday objects, including “2 rat traps, 7 mousetraps (2 types),  53 toy truck wheels,  2 business card holders,  hockey helmet,2 plungers,  rotating lawn sprinkler,  4 egg slicers,  4 ice scrapers,  4 ladles,  4 slotted spoons,  camping thermos, toilet flush valve,  8 ice skate blade guards (2 types),  2 baseball throat guards,  trashcan foot pedal,2 spoon draincups,  2 blender bases,  4 hair cutter spacers,  2 kneepads,  thermos base, ski goggles, football shoulder pads,  6 shinguards (3 types),  2 hockey leg guards,  wall outlet plate,  3 vitamin cases(2 types),  3 manicure bowls,  3 doorknob wall guards,  hand towel holder,  4 bicycle splashguards(2 types),  25 turnbuckles,  corner paint applicator,  slotted ladle,  2 faucet strainers,  paper towel holder,3 screen door latches,  handheld spotlight,  2 flashlights,  closet pole mounts,  lots of bottlecaps” and more. Voltron Deluxe Hoodie: And I’ll Form the Hood!

Defend the universe with this badass hoodie from 80s Tees, featuring three fifths of the Lion Force Voltron squad in their proper positions. The only thing I don’t like about it is that Keith’s Black Lion looks a bit depressed in this hoodie. A matching pair of Blue Lion and Yellow Lion sweatpants and slippers would probably cheer him up.

While you can’t disassemble the hoodie into three cuddly lions, the Black Lion’s jaw is detachable for practical purposes.

You can order the Voltron Deluxe Costume Hoodie from 80s Tees for $160 (USD). The store also has a version of the hoodie without the lion heads, although why you’d want that over this one is beyond me.

LEGO Monsters vs. Mecha Dioramas: Pacific Bricks

Hobby Inside is a South Korean professional LEGO building crew. They make multi-layered and very detailed LEGO dioramas for display. While most of their work depict cities and landscapes, they also have a handful of dioramas that feature monsters and mechas duking it out on a wrecked city, like this unmistakable nod to Pacific Rim:

I’ve also included Hobby Inside’s two other robot versus kaiju pieces in the gallery below. One features a Mothra lookalike – Hobby Inside calls it Mothle – while the other has a Godzilla lookalike called Legora and a giant robot called Insider-V (perhaps a mix of Gundam and Combattler-V?).

What I really love about Hobby Inside’s dioramas is how they use LEGO to represent motion and objects that I would never have imagined could be depicted with LEGO. Things like the vapor trail behind the Jaeger’s missiles, Mothle’s web, Legora’s flame and smoke rings and the exhaust coming out of Insider-V’s rocket fist.

If you want to see more of these dioramas, Hobby Inside has detailed breakdowns on its website. The site is in Korean, but it’s worth checking out just for the pictures.

Fan Made Titanfall Titan Mech Action Figure: That Was Fast

Titanfall is an upcoming online multiplayer FPS for the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. It seems to be one of the better launch titles for the Xbox One, putting an emphasis on agility and speed while rockin’ some sweet-looking mecha. A Japanese custom toy maker appears to have the same strengths. He managed to make a replica of the game’s giant robot, even though the game isn’t out yet.

I could very well be mistaken, but I’m guessing the toy maker uses the moniker nammkkyys. What I gleaned from his blog is that he based his replica on the publicly available trailers and images of Titanfall, as well as the large Titan bust that was shown at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. What makes his feat even more impressive is that he made it from scratch; it’s not a mod of an existing action figure. I think he took a few liberties here and there, but overall he did a great job. The action figure is about 9.5″ tall, which by the toy maker’s estimate makes it a 1/30 scale replica.

Check out nammkkyys’ blog for more images of the impressive Titan action figure. Be sure to check his previous posts to see his work in progress images; those will give you a better idea of his skill and dedication. Seeing as Respawn Entertainment i.e. Titanfall’s developer itself was the one who spread the word about nammkkyys’ work, I wouldn’t be surprised if he scores a free copy of the game for his work.

Custom Pacific Rim Crimson Typhoon Action Figure: Go Modded or Go Extinct

This custom 7″ action figure of the Crimson Typhoon wasn’t made by triplets. It was modded by toymaker/jaeger meister/apocalypse canceller John Mallamas aka Jin Saotome.

custom crimson typhoon pacific rim action figure by jin saotome

Jin modified NECA’s official action figure of Pacific Rim‘s Chinese mecha to make it more poseable and attractive. He replaced its arm hinges and added ball joints on its ankles. He also replaced the hands using parts from Transformers action figures and made a plasma blast prop for its left hand. He also installed an LED on its eye and added a ton of sculpting detail. Finally, he repainted the entire toy, adding details like wear and tear.

Jin put the action figure up for auction on eBay, but it’ll most likely be gone by the time you read this. But he’s also going to sell custom action figures of Pacific Rim‘s main mech Gipsy Danger as well as of the Knifehead Kaiju, so watch out for those on his deviantART page. He should make his own take on a mecha-Kaiju.

LEGO Evangelion Unit-01: You Can (Not) Top This

We’ve seen the father of this LEGO mech hybrid; now it’s time to meet its mother. It’s a scale model of Evangelion Unit-01 from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. Eva Launch!

lego neon genesis evangelion unit 01 by moko

Japanese LEGO enthusiast Moko says it took him three years to complete this masterpiece. The figure stands nearly 4′ tall and weighs almost 21lbs. Its torso is just a tad too bulky, but honestly I didn’t think you could make something this slim and articulated using LEGO pieces. It even has proper joints! Plus the colors are spot on.

Gundam Tempura: Deep-Fried Mecha

You know, they say everything tastes better deep-fried, and I have to agree. My wife an I always talk about how you could fry up some old shoe leather, and it would taste good. I wonder how a fried Gundam would taste. Guess I don’t have to wonder anymore…

Now I’m in the mood for tempura. Thanks a lot, Lazorz.

LEGO Gundam is Too Good to Be Official

If you spent the rest of your day putting your skull back together after seeing Gyuta K.’s LEGO Eva Gundam, brace yourself. Because as it turns out, he has an earlier project so awesome it will beam saber your brain to bits. It’s a LEGO action figure of the White Devil, the RX-78-2 Gundam.

lego gundam rx 78 2 by gyuta

Like many action figures, this LEGO Gundam has several points of articulation, making it quite poseable. And like many LEGO creations, the Gundam has swappable parts, including two different chests. One chest has a cockpit for a minifig Amuro Ray while the other transforms into the FF-X7 Core Fighter. I think I just saw parts of your cerebellum drip out of your nose.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to de-blow your minds. You see, Gyuta K. uploaded the pictures and details of his masterpiece on MOCPages way back in 2010. I know what you’re thinking – LEGO Cuusoo! Gyuta K. did submit a proposal to LEGO’s website, but it was rejected “for not following the Guidelines.” I guess it was just too badass to be mass-produced. Activate your Newtype powers and fly to Gyuta K.’s MOCPages page to see more of the action figure.
