Huawei Ascend G 615 Smartphone Heads to Deutschland

There are tons of smartphones available these days, and Chinese gadget makers Huawei have just announced a new model which will be released in Germany very soon. If you like what you see, then you’ll be happy to know that this phone will probably make its way into other international markets in a short while as well.

The Huawei Ascend G615[DE] has a 4.5-inch 720p IPS display, a proprietary 1.4GHz quad-core CPU, 8GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, and a microSD slot. The phone has a 8MP camera and a 1.3MP front-facing one. The rear camera has a dual LED flash and can record 1080p video. Connectivity includes 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and HSDPA speeds up to 21Mbps. Its 2150 mAh battery is good enough for 360 hours on standby, and 11 hours of talk time.

Unfortunately, the G615 will ship only with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), so it’s two versions behind the latest edition, Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean). Though if you can deal with that, and its slightly bulky 1.05cm thick case, it actually looks like a pretty decent phone.

When it’s released in Germany, an unlocked phone will retail for €299 (~$400USD).

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Tablet: 8-Inches of Android Paradise

There are plenty of 7-inch tablets in the Android market, and just after Sony announced their Xperia Tablet Z, Samsung is throwing its hat into the ring with another tablet that’s just a little bit bigger than the others.

According to rumors and tipsters, the Samsung Galaxy Note Android tablet will ship with an 8-inch display. It’s expected to have on board Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, a 1.6GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 5MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front facing one. The 8-inch, 1280×800 display would make this tablet more portable than its 10.1-inch big brother, but at the top end of the crowded Android 7-inch tablet market.

The 8-inch Samsung Galaxy Note Tablet is expected to be launched between Feb. 25 and 28, 2013 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Sony NWZ-W273 Waterproof Walkman Lets You Swim with Your Tunes

If I didn’t have my music when I was running, I probably would have trouble with boredom and motivation, especially because I usually run by myself. So I can imagine the same holds true for any sort of distance swimming. Swimmers rejoice and check out Sony’s new sports MP3 player, that’s completely waterproof.

The Sony NWZ-W273 Walkman is an integrated headphone/MP3 player with 4GB of internal memory. Even if you swim more than a few laps, that should be plenty to load up your favorite tunes for a lengthy workout. Its IPX8 rating means it’s waterproof to up to 2-meters (~6.56 feet) in depth. The device delivers up to 8 hours of music playback, and has a quick-charge option which will juice it up in 3 minutes for an extra hour of playback.

I can already see hardcore triathletes using this in the water, because they will be easily able to use this on their bikes, and then in the water directly. Assuming, that is, that their particular triathlon allows the use of music players.

Amazon Lends the Music Industry a Clue with AutoRip

Rumors were circulating earlier this week that Amazon was set to launch a new service called AutoRip. According to those rumors, the service would provide users with digital versions of tracks on physical CD albums that they purchase and no additional cost. The rumors even went so far as to claim Amazon would be making the service retroactive covering any CD that consumers have ever purchased via Amazon.com.

Honestly, the rumor was a bit hard to believe but Amazon has now officially confirmed the service. Even more impressive than buying a CD today and getting free digital versions of the tracks that you can access on your smartphone or tablet is that the service is in fact retroactive. Amazon will give you digital versions of songs on CDs you purchased via Amazon.com as far back as 1998.

At launch, the AutoRip service is offered for over 50,000 albums on Amazon.com with more on the way. Albums available cover everything from new releases to back catalog albums. Amazon’s new service is made possible with deals with major record labels and music publishers. Deals are in place with EMI, Sony, and Warner as well as hundreds of independent music labels. The service is automatically enabled for any music you purchase and is downloadable via the Amazon Cloud Player at no cost.

iHome iDL 100 Stereo Clock Dock Charges Three Gadgets at Once

The biggest irritation for many people who moved from an older version of the iPhone to the new iPhone 5 was the smaller Lightning port. This meant that without an expensive and wonky adapter, your existing alarm clock dock and other plug-in accessories wouldn’t work with it. Until recently, if you didn’t want to bother with Apple’s adapter, there haven’t been a lot of other options.

Accessory maker iHome has revealed an interesting gadget that will be on display at CES 2013. The device is an alarm clock docking station called the iDL 100. The most interesting aspect of this device is that it has not one Lightning dock, but two.

That means you can charge two iPhone 5s, or 5th gen iPod Touches at the same time, or your iPhone 5/iPod Touch and your iPad mini. If you still have additional gadgets in the house that you need to charge, it also offers a USB connector. Charging capacity is up to 2.1 amps. In addition to being able to play music from docked iOS devices, the clock radio also has an auxiliary input jack for other devices. One other interesting feature is the time autosync, which ensures your alarm clock’s time matches that of a docked iPhone or iPad.

The expected retail price for the iHome iDL 100 is $149.99(USD), and a release date has yet to be announced.

Most Popular Posts of 2012

Well another year is over, and it was loaded with triumph and tragedy as usual. But as usual, humankind persevered – at least when it came to their gadgets and geekery.

All tolled, we published over 3,700 posts this year, bringing our total since we launched in 2006 up to over 14,200 posts. And that’s just one of our two sites! We know that not all of you visit Technabob every day (we wish you would – so why not subscribe to our RSS Feed?), so in case you missed any of our biggest stories, here are the 30 most popular articles we posted in 2012…

As you can see, there’s a pretty good variety of stuff, ranging from gadgets and video games, to geeky costumes, to the funny and just downright weird on the list. There’s also a typically large volume of Apple tech, and an atypically large amount of Assassin’s Creed stuff. Guess you guys couldn’t get your fill of Connor/Ratonhnhaké:ton this year.

Technabob continues to grow thanks to you guys. We ended the year with over 8.2 million unique visitors, and just over 15 million pages viewed on the site during 2012. And since we launched in 2006, we’ve had over 30 million unique visitors and 54 million pageviews. The mind boggles.

Cheap Wireless AirPlay Speaker Hack: Apple & Raspberry Pi

Tinkerers looking for a way to make their old speakers play nice with Apple’s AirPlay technology can now do so on the cheap, thanks to the Raspberry Pi, a neat hack made by Cambridge Engineering student Jordan Burgess and some free software.

The key component for Jordan’s hack is James Laird’s Shairport, an open source Airport Express emulator. Jordan also used the free Raspbian OS provided by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Here’s the hack in action:

The tinny sound isn’t just YouTube’s compression; Jordan reminds us that the Raspberry Pi wasn’t built with audiophile level technology, so you might want to get a USB sound card as well. Head to Jordan’s website for more details on the hack. I’m still hoping the AirBridge gets produced.

R2-D2 Wooden iPhone Dock: Help Me Etsy-Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Hope

You know, it’s funny that with all of the R2-D2 merch I’ve seen over the years, I’ve never envisioned the little maintenance droid in wood. But now that I’ve seen him made out of the stuff, I rather like the way he looks.

r2 d2 iphone dock 2

This rustic wooden iPhone dock was handmade by Mario of Valliswood, and bears more than a passing resemblance to R2-D2. He was made using sustainable hardwoods found in the woods of Croatia, and measures about 9 inches-tall, and his head swivels open to dock your iPhone or iPod Touch. I always thought that R2 should have an iPhone dock built into his body somewhere.

r2 d2 iphone dock 1

You’ll need to provide your own charger cable, but R2 is compatible with the iPhone 3G/3GS, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5 and iPod devices except the shuffle and new nano. R2 was always such a versatile droid, wasn’t he?

The R2-D2 dock is selling for $210(USD) over on Etsy. If you want him sitting under the Christmas tree this year, you’d better move quick before some sneaky Jawa snatches him up from under your nose.
