MOBISERV Robot Companion

As you age and your friends start to push up daisies, you would find yourself surrounded by folk younger than yourself (some by a long mile) more often than not. It can get lonely at times however, when all the young whippersnappers have their own lives to run and be busy with, which is why robots might step in to take the place of human companionship. The MOBISERV project is one of those ideas that could help out the lonely older folk out there, where it comes in the form of a mobile wheeled semi-humanoid figure that boasts a bevy of sensors, cameras, audio and touchscreen interface, functioning as a cyber-nanny of sorts to boot since the MOBISERV project is able to remind users to take their medicine, suggest a favorite drink or ask them to take a stroll in the park.

Not only that, this robot is capable of working in tandem with smart clothing on the patient, helping him or her monitor their vital signs, health and safety, as well as alert the relevant medical personnel and emergency services as and when required. Taking more than 33 months to develop among an alliance between research institutes, universities and technology companies across Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Holland, Switzerland and the UK, we do hope to see the MOBISERV project end up as an affordable robot companion to the aged in due time.

Iron Man Cast Makes Us Want To Break All Of Our Bones For It

Iron Man Cast Makes Us Want To Break All Of Our Bones For ItIt’s not uncommon for kids to get a broken bone at some point in their life as they live a dangerous life between snacks, multiplayer sessions of Call of Duty and nap time. Having your friends sign your cast is something we’ve all grown up doing, but that trend will soon be over if something like the cast we’re featuring in this story takes off.

Instead of asking your friends and current crush to show you sympathy by signing your cast, you can decide to take life by the horns and make your cast the most badass one anyone has ever seen by drawing on it so it looks like a portion of Iron Man‘s arm. Reddit user Caligineus decided the world needed to see his friend’s hard work, and as you’d expect, the submission became an instant hit on the site.

As you can see from the image, there’s some serious detail behind the drawing, which of course features Iron Man’s Pulse Laser that shoots out from the palm of his hand. It’s going to be a shame when the doctor cuts the cast off when her arm fully heals, or maybe this person can decide to live life with a cast on since this is one awesome-looking cast.

    Fight AIDS While You Sleep

Fight AIDS While You SleepAIDS is a disease that has yet to see a full, 100% foolproof cure – although modern medical technology has more or less allowed someone with enough means to live a long and full life thanks to a cocktail of ever changing drugs, while an extremely small percentage of folks out there do seem to be “immune” from infection. Well, assuming someone walked beside you and shared that you could help out in the fight against AIDS without doing anything or taking up your precious time, you might think that such a request was an impossible one. However, a paradigm shift might just change your perspective, as the FightAIDS@Home happens to be a project that requires an Android-powered device – be it a smartphone or tablet, and it will be able to make use of your device’s unused computing power, allowing you to do your part while sleeping.

Of course, this would mean your smartphone or tablet would work best if it were to have a full battery charge and hooked up to Wi-Fi. This does seem to be pretty much a modern take on the SETI project, and this particular FightAIDS@Home project will run on the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing app.

Latest LUMOback Sensor Is New And Improved

Latest LUMOback Sensor Is New And Improved Wearable technology is a category that looks all primed to explode across society – and I mean that in a good way, too, with a strong suspicion in my gut that Google Glass is the one which will spearhead this particular effort. According to LUMO Body Tech, a company that hails from Palo Alto, California, they have managed to come up with their very own posture monitoring technology, and over a course of time, it makes sense to introduces changes that will streamline the entire process, sporting a smaller LUMOback sensor which is even more comfortable to wear – not to mention having a longer battery life to last throughout the day.

The new LUMOback 3 will also come with a spanking new antenna, an improved exterior shell, and a belt that can stretch all the more, delivering a better fit and improved breathing for your skin that is located right below. Data will be transmitted to your smartphone so that you will be able to keep tabs on your posture readings at all times, but I am quite sure one of the best ways to correct any slouch – at least speaking from a guy’s point of view, would be to date this really hot girl, and you would be extremely conscious of your posture all the time. 3D Printed Ears To The Rescue

3D Printed Ears To The RescueI am not quite sure just how many people you know who actually cut off their own ears by purpose, or have their ears removed from the sides of their head by accident, but in either case, the victim will have no cause for worry where spare parts are concerned, especially since there are no miracle workers around these days to simply speak healing of a hastily cut off ear, unlike 2,000 years or so ago. Researchers over at the Hangzhou Dianzi University in China have successfully unveiled their Regenovo 3D printer, which will be different from other more familiar 3D printers in the market that play nice with plastic or metal dust, the Regenovo will be able to print out living tissue – including the tiny ears that you see above.

This is not the first team who are capable of printing out “spare parts” in 3D glory for the ordinary man on the street, as it has been done before in the past, including a team over at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. I suppose the age of “Repo Men” might be upon us sooner rather than later, don’t you think so? Other than ears, what do you think the most suitable body part would benefit from a 3D printer?

Have a pill text your doctor from within

bandaid-smartYou might think that you are smart and know how to take care of your health, but in a surprising statistic that was shown off by folks over at the World Health Organisation (WHO), it seems that approximately 50% of us fail to take medicines correctly, and slightly more than 50% of drugs have been prescribed, dispensed or sold inappropriately. That certainly does not sound too good, don’t you think so? After all, inappropriate sales or prescription of drugs could result in horrifying consequences for patients, and it will also cost healthcare providers millions every single year. Perhaps this is where technology is able to step in and help, and a tablet which is smart enough to text or tweet you when it enters your stomach might be the solution.

This definitely sounds as though it remains within the realm of science fiction, but far from it – Proteus could prove to be the next medical breakthrough that humanity is going to fall in love with and celebrate. Named after the microscopic vessel which ventured within the human body in the cult 1960s movie Fantastic Voyage, the Proteus happens to be an ingestible sensor, and the key to it working is the fact that it can be embedded in a tablet, functioning in pretty much the same way as that of a potato battery.

Your stomach acid happens to be the ionic fluid required to create enough voltage so that the sensor will come into life, which in turn, communicates with a small plaster-shaped patch that is worn by the patient, and this particular patch is capable of tracking vital signs, movement and sleep. As for the patch itself, it will be able to send whatever data it received to an app that resides on the cloud, and this information can be accessed from a smartphone, tablet or PC, being set to send an alert to family, caregivers or healthcare professionals so that folks around the patient can rest easy, knowing that the pills have been swallowed. The more paranoid folks might think of it as a way for the government to keep track of you…

    “Diagnostics-on-Demand” Medical Device Invented

GE as well as the University of Washington have teamed up, working on a “Diagnostics-on-Demand” medical device that is meant for use in the realm of infectious disease detection. This particular DARPA-backed program will focus on the creation of an instrument-free, paper-based, fully-disposable device which can see action in remote areas, considering how access to medical diagnostic equipment in those areas are extremely limited due to numerous reasons. With the “Diagnostics-on-Demand” medical device, it is small enough to travel with you, and can detect a wide range of diseases in under an hour depending on color-changing paper which is similar to those found on a pregnancy test kit.

Forget about TV on-demand, we are presented with on-demand medical diagnosis here, where it can be used anytime, anywhere in the world. Just how small is this new medical device? Roughly the size of a deck of playing cards, and it can pack in the kind of technology which allows one to detect infectious disease through a simple nasal swab in under 60 minutes. Definitely the device to have in this on-demand world that wants everything to be done quickly in the shortest time possible. Hopefully “Diagnostics-on-Demand” medical device would not be too pricey for developing countries. [Press Release]

GuideIN Tube Is A Self-Guided Intubation Robot

Another day, and yet another robot comes to save the day. This time around, we have the help of the GuideIN Tube, which so happens to be a self-guided intubation robot that you can see in action in the video above. It would be interesting to see just how much easier life would get for those in the medical line and are in the business of saving lives. Just about any anesthesiologist is able to tell you this – intubation does have a failure rate at times, and when it actually does fail, especially during moments when the patient is not spontaneously breathing and cannot be ventilated, this is when you press the panic button. With the GuideIN Tube robot, algorithms have been put in place in order to deal with the difficult airway.

The GuideIN Tube is the result of work courtesy of researchers over at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where they have managed to cobble together this robotic intubation device which will make use of infrared light in order to identify the airway, while guiding the tube toward it. Since it relies on infrared technology, the GuidIN Tube is capable of working in situations where the normal human eye might find it difficult to see, and that is always a good thing.

Robotic Intubater Makes It Easier To Guide a Tube Through Your Throat

It’s not the most pleasant experience, but patients placed under general anesthesia who might not be able to easily breathe on their own are usually intubated, a procedure where a breathing tube is inserted down into their tracheas through their mouths. Usually a skilled doctor or nurse guides the tube in visually, but students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a robotic alternative that guides itself in, minimizing mistakes.
