App (and Device) to Keep You Healthy

Plenty of iPhone apps exist to help you stay healthy. You have food tracking, exercise tracking, heart rate monitoring. The list goes on and on. We can’t seem to get enough apps to help us live healthy lives. One more to add to your list for later this year is Lapka Personal Environment Monitor. Lapka consists of 4 small devices that connect to your iPhone. Once the Lapka app is downloaded, attach a device and measure:

  • Organicity of food and water: Includes a probe to look for significant nitrates, caused by residue of synthetic fertilizer, indication of a non organic source.
  • Humidity: Temperature and relative humidity to exist in the optimum climate.
  • Radiation: Each particle is counted to help you understand how it may impact you.
  • EMF/Electromagnetic field: Electronics, telecommunication devices and power lines can create adverse effects.

Lapka is more than just a measuring device however. It analyzes data received with both your personal history and with average target values of each environment. You can also collect snapshots of your data through the day to create your own comfort diary. Then Lapka literally helps you optimize your surroundings to live a better healthier life.

After a very successful Kickstarter campaign (raising over $170,000 on an ask of $25,000) Lapka is in production. They anticipate a late 2012 launch with a $220 price point. Sign up for email updates at mylapka.com to stay in the loop.

Think about it. Food tracking apps are good, but you pretty much know that eating the French Fries is not good for you. And apps can check some of your vitals, you can too though. But there are many unknowns in this world that impact our health and that, without a scientist in tow, we can never measure. Lapka is coming, to help us learn more about our environment, stay safe and stay comfortable.

Thanks: Fast Company

Audio/Visual Alerting Pillbox

Goodness gracious, has technology advanced to such a stage where the humble plastic pillbox is now electronically inclined, so much so that you no longer have any more excuse not to pop those pills as prescribed by your doctor? I guess so, especially when you have the $249.95 Audio/Visual Alerting Pillbox that not only delivers visual indicators that it is time of that day again, it also delivers audible and visual alerts. The pillbox will beep once every two seconds when it is time for you to get those pills going down your esophagus, while a green LED on the front of the box will illuminate as part of the visual reminder repertoire.

Not only that, the compartment which holds the correct medication will also light up. The only way for things to go wrong would be human error as you fill up this pillbox with the wrong medication, and also when you forget to juice it up. Good thing the Audio/Visual Alerting Pillbox is able to operate for up to half a dozen weeks with a four hour charge by the AC adapter. It has its own internal memory that will store the name of each medication, dosage amount, frequency, and drug indications, while letting you print a medication reference sheet separately which you can attach underneath the lid.

Hangover Heaven, Las Vegas – For When you Feel Like Hell

Sure, we’ve all been there. Maybe its the weekend, you get together with some friends, and “just one more”, turns into one too many, and after a night of trying to sleep with one foot on the floor to stop the darn bed from spinning, you wake up with the worst skull splitting headache, with little sweaters on your teeth and an overall tired-to-the-bone, sick all over feeling that just won’t let you enjoy any part of the day to come, no matter how much fun you thought it was gonna be.

Well, if you’re in Las Vegas, theres hope. Quickly call Hangover Heaven and hop on the bus for some proprietary hangover help, developed by Doctor Jason Burke. The 45 foot bus is a rolling hangover clinic outfitted to serve 10 – 14 patients at one time in luxurious air conditioned comfort and can bring you back up to party speed in no time. Hangover Heaven will also visit you at your hotel room, or shuttle you to their freestanding clinic.

Hangover Heaven’s premier “Salvation” treatment consists of intravenous hydration, anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory medications and also includes special vitamin therapies that promise to make you feel better pretty quickly in spite of the $149 dollar price tag. For a morning after that doesn’t involve too much damage the 99 dollar “Redemption” package might suffice, and simply involves some quick intravenous fluids to flush your system and get you back on track. Lastly, for a night out that renders you unable to even leave your bed the next day, the good doctor will visit your room and provide assistance to you and your closest friends, starting at around 400 dollars a pop.

So don’t let the night of your life ruin an entire day… just call Hangover Heaven. Unfortunately, the service is currently only available in Las Vegas, but I see the concept catching on in some of the worlds bigger cities, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and probably on college campuses everywhere.

HeartMath emWave2 Portable Training Device – Transform Yourself

Its obvious that things are becoming more chaotic these days. People are working harder, sleeping less, and pushing themselves to the limit. Ask your average guy on the street if they feel stressed out, and the answer is almost always a resounding yes. Stress certainly takes its toll on a body, almost all studies confirm that continuous stress is simply not good for us, and for some people the damage is irreparable, we have to find a way to manage our minds where we really can handle it all.

Check out the HeartMath emWave2 Portable Training Device by using information collected via pulse sensors and translating that data into simple line graphs on your computer, the Portable Training Device can teach you the steps you need to relax, and put yourself in the proper state of mind, completely assisting you in achieving the right balance for improved communications, sleep, health, or generalized clarity.

The device itself works around the idea that you can mentally control your heart rate, and yes, it really can be done. For those of you familiar with the idea of biofeedback it seems to be based on a very similar concept, learning what relaxed actually is… and then learning how to be able to achieve that state consistently, and when you need to.

Learning to change your emotional reactions doesn’t seem like an easy task, but the emWave2 Portable training device may just give us the edge we all need. The emWave2 is sold in a portable version, desktop version or bundled with programs designed to enhance specific aspects or your life, like meditation and prayer or even stopping emotional eating. WIth prices starting around 229 bucks, the emWave2 Portable Training Device is available at amazon.com

The Future Glucose Monitoring – The “Eyes” Have it

There certainly have been some advances in the way diabetics test their blood sugar levels. Glucose monitors have gotten more compact, the amount of blood needed for an accurate test has gotten much smaller. iDevices have been thrown into the fold with special apps for keeping track and sending results to your doctor. Heck they’re even developing a tattoo that changes color in response to your glucose levels, but what we really want is a way to accurately check those levels without having to be stuck with a needle… ever.

Well, scientists at the University of Michigan as well as a biomedical engineer at Arizona State just might have some answers to the kinds of devices we’ve been waiting for, the U of M scientists have developed a sensor that is able to detect diluted levels of glucose in the tears of animals, and Dr. Jeffry Labelle from Arizona State is working with the Mayo Clinic in order to develop a device that you simply press against the white part of your eye in to check your levels. Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Dr. Labelle’s device boasts an accuracy the same as blood testing, the material is easier to gather than a blood sample, is painless, and requires only that a test strip be held against the white of your eye. Unfortunately, presently the sample requires swift handling and immediate measurement to get those accurate results, so thats where the scientists have their work cut out for them. They are now working to make this painless test  more user friendly and consistent. Never fear however, their diligent work looks like it could payoff sooner than you think, and the device could be in your hands in as little as 2 – 5 years. Wouldn’t that be great?

Roomba makers iRobot trialling RP-VITA medical robot

iRobot, the creators of the popular Roomba cleaning robot, have created a medical assistant dubbed RP-VITA (Remote Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant) aimed at being used in hospitals. RP-VITA is the result of a $6 million investment in InTouch, with the robot able to navigate hospitals using a myriad of sensors, such as sonar, a laser range finder, and two cameras. The robot is also able to intelligently create a map of the designated hospital, although it’s primarily navigated using a joystick by a remote doctor.

RP-VITA is designed to be used by a remote caregiver, able to hold video calls for around five hours via an included monitor and webcam. The robot can be controlled remotely using a laptop, desktop, or iPad, and is designed to be used in emergency situations so that doctors can get quick access to a patient. Information about patients can be pulled down over WiFi, and when not used for video calls the RP-VITA can access records via a medical cloud storage system. Just like the Roomba, it will return to a charging base when it needs more power.

The RP-VITA has all the sensors to navigate a hospital without any assistance, but it can’t be used unaided until it’s given the go-ahead by the FDA, which could happen by the end of the year. It isn’t InTouch’s first robot either: the company previously created the RP-7, reportedly at work in around 600 hospitals and serving 70,000 patients each year. RP-VITA, meanwhile, will cost hospitals between $4,000 and $6,000 a month to run.

Age Man Suit helps the young identify with the old

The young might find it rather alien to sympathize with the older generation, as they have yet to realize the wealth of information that the more senior generation have for us to tap into. Well, we too, wonder how come grandpa and grandma just cannot keep up with us when we were younger, running around like a jackrabbit without a care in the world. Well, here is a way for the younger generation to empathize with the older folks – through wearing the Age Man Suit. Yes sir, the Age Man Suit is extremely cumbersome, and it ensures you are transformed into a stiff and blurry-eyed version of yourself in years to come (for most of us, anyways).

The Age Man Suit will feature a yellow visor, knee and elbow pads, in addition to a Kevlar-style vest and padded gloves, or so says The Guardian. This suit was created by German researchers so that modern societies are able to “sensitize” themselves to the lives and needs of their rapidly-aging populations. Kevlar, eh? Do all senior citizens feel bulletproof?

Tanita’s Sleep Meter is Internet connected

They say that getting enough hours of sleep is important, and not only that, picking up quality sleep is also another issue as quantity alone should not be used as a benchmark. If only there was a way for one to be able to measure the quality of sleep. Wait a minute, Tanita has a potential solution in the form of their Sleep Meter which is strategically located right under your bedclothes. Basically, the Sleep Meter is said to be effective even when you are sleeping on your side, as it is fully capable of measuring the sleep state of the user regardless of how he or she is sprawled all over the comfortable mattress..

The Tanita Sleep Meter will rely on a sensor that contains water to perform the necessary readings required, where its measurement data will then be made available over the Internet for remote monitoring capability. Also known as the “Sleep Scan (SL-511),” this device is hoped to see action for business use, particularly in nursing and caring businesses, hotels and express companies. Shipping of the Sleep Meter will kick off early August to volunteer testers, while those who want to pick one up for themselves will have to wait until early October.

The Sleep Meter will come with a mat-like sensor that is placed under bedclothes, and whenever you lie on the bedclothes, the sensor will get to work automatically, measuring your sleep state. Should you make some movement away from the bedclothes, it will stop whatever it is measuring at the moment, sending such measured data to a server over a wireless LAN connection.

After receiving the data, the server will start to use its built-in algorithms to analyze it. The user of the Sleep Meter (upon waking up, I suppose) or a manager is then able to perform a check on the analysis results that comprise of (but not limited to) sleep stage, sleep score, and sleep type through a simple act of accessing the server.

Basically, all vibrations sent to the water contained in the mat are picked up by a condenser microphone. These detected vibrations will be separated into a trio of components (pulse, breathing and body motion) that are based on the differences in frequency, intensity, etc. Using those vital data, analysis results are then calculated. Sounds like a dream job, testing the Tanita Sleep Meter. What do you think?

Do you want your Baby to Look like a Celebrity?

There really is no good reason to feel uncomfortable engaging in a conversation about a sperm bank. There are a number of perfectly understandable reasons to utilize the services of such a place, and I do believe that people should be able to have children if they want to, and its certainly none of my business how they go about it. There isn’t too much new in the sperm business these day, but there is something you may not have heard about…

California Cryobank, a reproductive tissue service, is offering a Donor look-a-like program, offering you the subjective input of the Cryobanks’s employees who let perspective parents choose a baby-daddy who they think looks like your favorite star. So if you want a “baby like Beckham” this may be the place for you. If a donor looks like more than one famous person, they will list them all for you, making it easier for you to visualize what your offspring may ultimately look like.

Curiosity got the best of me, and of course I had to take a look, all donors are listed with height, eye, and hair color information and, if applicable, their celebrity look-a-likes. Right off the bat I found a nice Ben Affleck and a rather short Derek Jeter. It seems as though there are limitless pages of donors to choose from and different ways to list them, including by education level, religion or ancestry, heck finding a dad is a lot easier than finding a husband!

Door to door delivery of this specialty sperm starts at around 455 bucks, but the price can quickly multiply when you consider the various add-on opportunities, including facial feature reports, medical histories, childhood photographs or even a handwriting analysis all compiled on your intended insta-dad. I’m not sure if features are more important than say, IQ… but I suppose careful screening and healthy babies should be the ultimate goal. How do you feel about making a celebrity baby.. you know, without the actual celebrity?

Ancestry by DNA – Finally Answers the Question, Where do I Come From?

Everyone has a unique family history, but some folks seem to know more about who and where they come from and others would like to know more, but there isn’t really anyone left to ask. I have found that even the people who have a firm grasp on their family story recognize that the story always ends somewhere, obviously well before the actual beginning. Where do we all really come from? Who were our ancestors? I only know about my great-great grandmother, who came before her? at least tell me where she came from…

Well, it probably won’t give you all the answers, but it’s an interesting start, check out Ancestry by DNA offering unique DNA tests that can answer some questions about your percentages of European, Indigenous American, Sub-Saharan African or East Asian ancestry. So if you’re wondering where your real roots lie, this may be the test for you… and you might be very surprised at what you find.

Also offered is Lineage DNA testing, this test will allow you to discover your direct ancestors geographic origins. You can trace maternal, paternal, or both lineages and learn about the migration routes your ancient family traveled, on their way to making history, and ultimately, making YOU.

The Ancestry kits are mailed to you directly and contain a DNA collection kit, a certificate that is suitable for framing, and a comprehensive guide explaining your results. The Lineage kits contain the collection kit and a full color lineage certificate listing your haplogroup (groups that share a common ancestor) along with a description booklet and the guide. Prices start at around 99 bucks. Check out ancestrybydna.com for more information. At least now I understand why this nice Italian girl likes Chinese food so much… go figure.
