iPhone microscope helps out the naked eye

“There’s an app for that…”, or so the saying goes, and we are quite sure that iPhone as well as Android owners have far more installed apps than stock apps on their respective handsets. While Apple might seem to be on the backpedal when it comes to their iPhone at this point in time in terms of market share compared to the expanding Android footprint, do bear in mind that Apple’s App Store is a well respected cash cow for the Cupertino firm, so to speak, as the App Store still outsells Google’s Play Store by a rather hefty ratio in comparison – and we all know that there is money at the end of the apps rainbow. What happens when you take into account hardware accessories as well? This is where this unique iPhone microscope accessory would come in handy for the medical field.

An international team of researchers recently reported in The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene that they managed to make use of a very simple microscope which was self-constructed, where thanks to a lens that costs just $8, it has been placed over the iPhone 4S’s camera and held in place with some sticky tape, and it was successfully used to detect the eggs of soil-transmitted parasitic worms, otherwise known as helminths, if you want to get technical about it. When compared to the results shown by a proper microscope when diagnosing children in rural Tanzania, it was discovered that for some nematodes, the iPhone microscope is more than capable of detecting worm eggs.

Well, what can we say about that? It would be nice if this makeshift solution was able to measure up to the kind of performance found in actual microscopes, but I guess that further refinements need to be made to ensure that this will happen sometime down the road.

Lifesaving Glasses

Glasses could turn into the next big tech thing. First you’ve got Google starting to tout their upcoming Google Glass product. Many of the functions of our smartphones will be included in their “smart spectacles” – which will attempt to eliminate the awkward fumbling that inevitably occurs when we need our phone. Next up in the world of glasses? A conceptual gadget from Johns Hopkins University looks to include a literal lifesaver on a pair of specs.

The recently announced Stroke Detector looks like a pair of swim goggles or Rec Specs. Included within are an infrared video camera and connection for a laptop. Together they measure and record eye movements. Strokes that occur in the back of the brain present symptoms of dizziness and vertigo which can also be present with simple inner ear issues. The key to understanding if it really is a stroke are their eye movements which are undetectable to a human.  Four million people a year visit US emergency rooms with stroke-like symptoms and only 5% actually do prove true. Most of these 4 million people go through a costly MRI which – in the case of those actually having a stroke – causes a delay in diagnosis. Time is of the essence when a stroke sets in. The Stroke Detector looks to save those valuable minutes, save lives and maybe even money.

Griffin MouthStick Stylus

I know that we live in an age where medical advances abound, but we are still not quite on the same level as that of Star Wars or Star Trek yet, where neural implants and cybernetics have advanced to such a point, where even a severely weakened Darth Vader could still end up being an imposing Sith Lord with the help of Emperor Palpatine and his reconstructive medical center. Having said that, here is a new age device that has debuted at HIMSS13, where it is known as the Griffin MouthStick Stylus and was specially designed after receiving the necessary input from medical professionals.

The Griffin MouthStick Stylus intends to expand the world of tablets, where it will bring touchscreen and button interaction to those who are living with manual disabilities. Yes sir, have you ever wondered how a disabled person, especially one who has lost their limbs or use of them, be able to make use of all current generation touchscreen handsets? The Griffin MouthStick Stylus will fit the bill nicely, where it was specially designed to provide comfort, stability and control while being held in the mouth.

According to Melissa Lapsley, B2B Education & Assistive Technology Product Specialist at Griffin Technology, “Everyone wants access to tablet technology. Japan approves worldwide sale of robot exoskeletons

Ever wondered how it feels like to wear a robotic suit on your daily walkabout? Japan, a country where robots rule (all right, I am saying that with extreme liberty. Robots do not “rule” there per se, but rather, the proliferation of robots in everyday life as well as culture is extremely well known), might soon help fuel an explosion of “robo mania” of sorts, by approving a new robot exoskeleton suit for a global rollout sometime down the road.

What you see above is a robot suit that is known as the “Hybrid Assistive Limb”, or rather, HAL for short, which has been specially developed to help and assist both the elderly and disabled to get around, and the mission to spread the wonders of HAL around the world has been aided by the receipt of its global safety certificate in Japan yesterday, which means a worldwide rollout is on the cards.

The Hybrid Assistive Limb comes across as a power-assisted pair of legs that were developed by Japanese robot manufacturer Cyberdyne (good thing it is not a company known as Skynet!), and Cyberdyne has quite a proven track record for robotic assistance tools, where they have come up with somewhat similar robot arms in the past, too.

A quality assurance body in Japan issued the certificate that was based on a draft version of an international safety standard where personal robots are concerned, and a full certificate for the finished product is tipped to be approved later The HAL holds the honor of being the first nursing-care robot that was certified under the draft standard, according to a ministry official. HAL is powered by batteries, where it is capable of detecting muscle impulses in order to anticipate and support the user’s body movements.

You cannot buy one off the shelf just yet though, as it remains on lease (some 330 of them) across 150 hospitals, welfare and other facilities in Japan since 2010, where it costs $1,950 thereabouts to rent a suit for the entire year.

Retinal implant allows the blind to see again

Blindness is arguably one of the worst afflictions one can have, making life exceedingly difficult. Nine people have been liberated from the from their blindness, however, thanks to a retinal implant that restores light to an eye that otherwise can’t see it. Called the Alpha IMS, this device utilizes the eye’s own neurons, unlike some other devices.

X-ray-showing-position-of-chip-and-power-supply-c-Oxford-Eye-Hospital-590x485

The device is implanted in the patient’s head and is powered via a separate battery pack that is wireless and located outside of the body. Underneath the retina, a grid containing 1500 electrodes is implanted, a method said to provide the patient with a higher resolution sight than other options. The implant works by detecting light.

The amount of light detected can be controlled by the patient via a dial that is located behind the ear. The grid works in much the same way as the light-detecting cells in the eyes, and for this reason it does not work for just any type of blindness. Rather, it works for those who have lost their vision due to a condition that has destroyed the eye’s ability to detect light.

The biggest advantage to the Alpha IMS over other camera-based methods is that it is more natural, and doesn’t require the patient to wear a camera. Because the implant is under the retina, the eye can be moved naturally to look around, giving the patient more freedom and a more natural vision. The patient’s own eye is responsible for detecting contrast and other such things.

Pedometer Walking Stick

Now, the $99.95 Pedometer Walking Stick is something that folks should have thought up of in the first place, but somehow or rather, no one came up with it until the folks at Hammacher did. As the name implies, this walking stick boats of a built-in pedometer which is more than capable of tracking steps, distance, time, and calories. It is constructed from lightweight yet sturdy aluminum, where the stick itself will assemble from two halves, twisting and locking into place without taking up too much of your time. Right below the handle on the shaft itself lies the pedometer that will activate automatically whenever its rubber tip strikes the ground.

This pedometer will then get to work, measuring every other step that is taken during a walking session while showing off the elapsed time. Whenever you stop, the pedometer will pause its counting to ensure accuracy. The display also shows off the total number of steps, calories burned, and distance in 10ths of a mile. With a contoured ABS handle that includes a polyester wrist strap and an upper shaft that has been coated with rubber for a comfortable grip, you know that the Pedometer Walking Stick is not poorly thought up of. There is also an LED light that clips to the shaft so that it can help illuminate walkways, or you can use it to flash a warning signal by blinking.
