Google Ending Meebo Bar Services On June 6

Google Ending Meebo Bar Services On June 6

Google regularly performs the ole “out with the old, in with the new” on a number of its products and services, with the most recent service to get the axe, Google Reader, being one of the few products the Internet actually seems to care about. The company is announcing it will once again be ending one of its services, this time, the victim is Meebo.

Starting on June 6, Google will give its Meebo Bar publishing tool the axe in order for the company to focus on other projects like Google+ Sign-In and a number of plug-ins. Meebo is a JavaScript plug-in that allowed for websites to easily share their content on a number of different social networks as well as additional ways to share a website. Developers who are still using Meebo are encouraged to remove its soon-to-be inactive code for their websites as the Meebo Bar will cease to load starting June 6. Although, if you still use the Meebo Bar to this day, we’re hoping this will be the spark that will get you to adopt a new way of sharing your content to others.

Meebo to retire toolbar on June 6th, plans to focus on Google+ instead

Meebo to retire toolbar on June 6th, plans to focus on Google instead

Just over a year ago Google snapped up a little social outfit called Meebo, quickly dismantling most of the firm’s services. The lone survivor? The Meebo Bar, an unobtrusive social toolbar that offers Facebook, Twitter and Google+ connectivity as well as minimal advertising. Nothing lasts forever though — Meebo has announced that the Meebo Bar will stop functioning on June 6th 2013. It’s a bit of a bummer for sites that employ the tool, but at least they won’t have to do anything to deactivate the service: Meebo says the code should become inert as soon as the service discontinues. The team says it plans to focus its efforts on Google+ Sign-In and Google+ plug-ins, which it sees as the best way to serve desktop and mobile publishers in the future.

Google retiring iGoogle, Google Mini, others for ‘spring cleaning’

Google retiring iGoogle, Symbian Search app, Google Mini, others for 'spring cleaning'

To everything (Turn, Turn, Turn). There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn). Sometimes those seasons can get a bit convoluted, however — or such is the premise of Google’s “Spring cleaning in summer” post, outlining the end of a handful of tech offerings. Because heck, even a company as big as Google has to pick its battles. On the chopping block this time out are the Google Mini enterprise search system, the Google Talk Chatback widget, Google Video, iGoogle and the Symbian search app. Of course, the company won’t be leaving people hanging entirely. Google’s pushing users toward existing properties like the Meebo bar for Talk Chatback and YouTube for Google Video (which already stopped taking uploads a while back), the latter of which will be fully integrated into the more popular video offering come August. More info on what all this means in the source link below.
