Jolla intends to keep the MeeGo flag flying

Just last week, we talked about Nokia parting ways with MeeGo, but is that the end of the operating system platform? Yes, we do know that Nokia will no longer be manufacturing any more smartphones that will run on the Linux-based MeeGo platform any more, but Jolla is another company that has stepped up to the plate, and has every intention of keeping this particular mobile software platform up and running instead of being consigned to the heap of history. In fact, Jolla wants to roll out a new smartphone that is powered by the MeeGo-based software later in 2012.

It is said that Jolla is not the only bunch of enthusiasts that intend to see MeeGo remain up and running on a bunch of devices, as part of the Jolla team include people from the Nokia N9 team, including previous directors of the project. Most of the action of today is focused on the Tizen Linux operating system that leans more towards web-based technologies where Linux-based operating systems are concerned, and there is also the possibility that the future revision of MeeGo is known as project Mer.

Nokia ex-employees to revive Meego

So, what happens when a brand new smartphone operating system is fully built and ready for large-scale deployment but ends up being left for dead? If you ask a certain group of former Nokia employees, the answer is that you take it upon yourself to bring the OS back to life. That’s exactly what Finnish startup Jolla is looking to do.

The company, which is made up of ex-Nokia personnel, is planning to develop a bunch of new phones built in the Meego platform. Meego, you may recall, was supposed to be Nokia’s answer to the explosion of Android and iPhone popularity. It was to be Nokia’s last shot to stay relevant in the changing mobile phone market. But just as it finished putting all the bells and whistles together, it ended up partnering with Microsoft and Windows Phone instead.

At the head of the new company is one Marc Dillon, who as you might expect was an integral part of the Meego team. Dillon was Nokia’s chief operating officer and was the principal engineer for the now-defunct mobile OS. “Nokia created something wonderful – the world’s best smartphone product. It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story,” Jolla said in a statement.

Jolla promises MeeGo will live on, plans new smartphone to reward the faithful

Nokia N9 with Pleo

More than a few N9 aficionados felt their hearts sink when important MeeGo team members left Nokia this week, putting the fate of the entire swipe-friendly platform in doubt. Recently-founded Jolla was clearly watching, as it confirmed just in the nick of time that it’s planning to carry the torch further. The Finnish startup, which includes important members of the N9 team as well as veterans of the unofficial MeeGo community, not only plans to iterate on MeeGo but to build its very own smartphone with that foundation. Those attached to Nokia’s interpretation of MeeGo will have to adapt to a few changes: Jolla’s work is based on the related, partly HTML5-driven Mer Project and will have a “brand new UI” to go with the new hardware. It won’t be a literal N10 as a result, but we’ll find out just what direction Jolla is taking soon — it’s been working on the phone since late 2011 with plans to show its work later this year. As long as some of the N9’s spirit carries forward, we have a hunch that a lot of fans won’t mind the absence of a Nokia badge.

MeeGo kisses goodbye to Nokia

Parting can be such sweet sorrow, and here we are at the end of the road for the MeeGo team over at Nokia. Head of Development of MeeGo Sotiris Makrygiannis did share word that their team will no longer be available to work alongside Nokia. Just to recap, the team over at MeeGo are the very same folks who are behind numerous devices such as the N770, N800, N810, N900, N950 and, more recently (relatively speaking, of course), the N9. Forum threads over at the Maemo forums did point out some folks sharing their appreciation for the work that was done before, as they mentioned their thanks and wished the MeeGo team all the best in their future work. Who else are left working with MeeGo? Well, we do hope that the MeeGo-based Tizen OS should arrive pretty soon – and with plenty of flair, too, to live up to its predecessors’ billing.

Nokia N9 PR1.3 updates Twitter, Mail, Facebook and more

Nokia has released an update for its N9 MeeGo smartphone, introducing numerous new features and bugfixes despite officially abandoning the platform itself. The handset, a handsome forerunner to the original Lumia 800, now gets MeeGo PR1.3, with the new update bringing “over 1,000 quality improvements” according to the Finnish company.

Those improvements include various problems in network and connectivity being ironed out, though it’s the app tweaks that are likely to see more interest. The Twitter app now runs faster, according to user reports, and introduces streaming updates so that new messages appear automatically.

There are also changes in the Mail and Facebook apps, though Nokia is yet to release a detailed changelog for the 40.2012.21-3 update. Instead, we get a one-line summary that, unsurprisingly, is leaving owners of the N9 somewhat frustrated.

As for the developer version of the phone, the Nokia N950, there’s apparently no official news on when – or even if – that might get a PR1.3 release of its own.

Key MeeGo team members leave Nokia, N9 owners swipe away a few tears

Nokia N9 white

This week will be remembered as a volatile one if you’re a MeeGo fan. Just hours after Nokia posted the PR 1.3 update for N9 owners, the company’s MeeGo development lead Sotiris Makyrgiannis and other team members have confirmed that they’re leaving for greener pastures. The split appears to be an amicable one, with the crew largely going to CloudBerryTec to write mobile apps (including for MeeGo) and consult on software even as they share fond memories. What’s left is a lot of doubt over the fate of the swipe-driven OS itself. Nokia promised years of support for the OS as a side project following the big leap to Windows Phone, but it also hadn’t mentioned the possibility of important staff departures, either. We’ve reached out to the company for a fuller answer — if it turns out that MeeGo development is winding down, the staff shift could be the end to completely in-house OS creation at a company that was once defined by its custom platforms.

Nokia N9 updated to MeeGo PR13, boasts 1,000 improvements

MeeGo isn’t quite dead, and Nokia N9 users are getting another update pushed to their phone to prove it. PR1.3, a firmware refresh that’s been in the works at least since 1.2 was released a few months ago, has finally been made official. But this is no simple bug fix — the latest version of MeeGo offers an impressive 1,000 “quality improvements, including mail, Facebook and Twitter.” According to Nokia’s official support page, the update will also provide several network and connectivity enhancements. The 203MB OTA download is now beginning to roll out, starting with unbranded devices and branching out from there. Continue past the break for the full statement from Nokia.

Update: We’ll give a hat tip out to our commenters, who clued us in on a forum thread that discusses many of these “quality improvements.” It appears that a large number of them are indeed bug fixes. Some of the actual boosts involve camera feature enhancements, higher volume, NFC fixes, better video decoding and more precise copy and paste [thanks BertrandsBox!] We also initially experienced sluggish behavior on the new update, but a factory reset seemed to resolve the concern.
