Video Game Character Tombstones: Sad Spoilers

Etsy shop Chinook Crafts is a treasure trove of geeky trinkets. I was going to feature its Pokémon Kanto gym badges by way of GoNintendo when I spotted an unusual category in the shop’s list: tombstones.

But if we think about it it’s actually kind of surprising that we don’t see more of these. Video games are ripe with death after all, from the ones we don’t even think about…

…to the ones whose deaths are given and thus inconsequential.

There are also deaths that jump start a game…

…including ones that turned out to be the start of an alternate reality and an entire series of games.

And as in real life, there are deaths in games that we’ll never forget, the ones that will leave you reeling in shock and despair. Like, The Transformers animated movie level of shock and despair.

The tombstones cost $10 (USD) each plus a variable amount of sadness. Check out Chinook Crafts for more designs. You creep.

Mega Man Board Game: Bittersweet Offering

There’s a new Mega Man game! It’s a, uh, *cough* a board game. Wipe your tears, Blue Bomber faithful, board games can be a lot of fun! Plus Jasco Games’ officially licensed game will let you play not just as Rock, but as a Robot Master too! Yes! No? Oh come on. It’s all we have right now. Look at the bright side.

Because the game is still not done, its rules (pdf) are still being tweaked as well, but I think I get the basic premise of the game. You and up to 3 other players are all Mega Man. The goal is to be the first Mega Man to beat Dr. Wily. Standing in your way are challenges strewn about the board, as well as the Robot Masters. The kicker here is that the players also control one Robot Master each. When you reach the “Boss Battle” stage of the board, you (as Mega Man) will fight the Robot Master of the player to your left.

Hold B to charge your Mega Browser, then let go and pledge at least $60 (USD) on Kickstarter to get the Mega Man Board Game as a reward. Or we can all just play Rayman Legends. Damn Capcom, what the hell happened?

Mega Man Bosses Bead Portraits: Rock’s Gallery

You don’t get to 10 Mega Man games without making a few enemies. 80 of them to be specific. Patrick Merrifield reminds us just how difficult the Blue Bomber’s life is with his massive masterpiece. Patrick made bead portraits of each of the Robot Masters that Rock faced in the classic Mega Man series.

Patrick said it took him over 90 hours and more than 67,000 beads to put the collection together. I don’t think I’ve ever arranged a thousand of anything. And yes, it is a collection of portraits, not one big wall, so you can split them however you want. You can’t buy them separately though. Here’s a closer look at one of the portraits.

Turn into Pay Man and buy the collection from Patrick’s Etsy shop for $1,000 (USD).

Custom Mega Man 2 25th Anniversary NES: Retro Master

The first Mega Man game celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, while its sequel is still “only” 24 years old. But it was Mega Man 2 that catapulted the Blue Bomber and his franchise to fame, and is widely considered to be one of the best videogames of all time. So I don’t think anyone would ridicule NES modders Platinum Fungi and Custom NES Guy for paying tribute to the legendary platformer one year in advance.

Platinum Fungi made the cutout backlit design, which features the eight Robot Masters from Mega Man 2, while Custom NES Guy did the slick paint job.

Cool Man. I’m not sure if Platinum Fungi is selling this particular console. You can hire him and Custom NES Guy for custom NES builds though, so maybe they’ll make another one for you.

Elizabeth Sherry’s Classical Videogame Art: Geek Mythology

Illustrator Elizabeth Sherry likes to make classical-style art based on videogame characters. No, not 8-bit. She went way more old school than that. Her digital paintings even have cracks and creases on them to make them look really old.

The one above is my favorite, but her Mario still life is a close second.

Billy Butcher Video Game Pop Culture Art: Come Play My Game, I’ll Test Ya!

Thanks to it8bit, I’ve found one of my new favorite artists: Billy Butcher. His collection Come Play My Game, I’ll Test Ya! is an edgy and lively mashup of pop culture, headlined by my favorite pastime: videogames. Can you name the references in each illustration?

My favorite has to be the Akira/Pac-Man/Ghostbusters mashup. “Tetsuoooo!!! Waka-Waka!!!”

Mega Man Unlimited Fan Game: Hold on to Your Heart Tank

It’s been quite a while since Capcom released an official Mega Man game; even its 25th anniversary gift to fans Street Fighter x Mega Man was mostly made by a fan. So forget about doing something right; it seems that if Mega Man fans want something done at all, they have to do it themselves. That’s what Philippe “MegaPhilX” Poulin and his friends are trying to accomplish with Mega Man Unlimited.

mega man unlimited by megaphilx

According to a Destructoid article from last year, MegaPhilX initially came up with Mega Man Unlimited just to join an animation contest sponsored by Capcom-Unity. When he decided to go ahead and make it a full game, he intended it to embody his ideas of what Mega Man 10 should be like, since the game had not yet been released at the time. MegaPhilX says that the design for Mega Man Unlimited was influenced by Mega Man 9 and 3.

MegaPhilX and five of his friends – Kevvviiinnn, ThunderThouin, Gabriel, Jocelyn and Jansim – have been working on the game for several years now and Mega Man Unlimited is finally in alpha stage. Let’s cut them some slack though, it’s not like programming this game is their full-time gig.

Here’s the latest trailer for the game:

And here’s its debut trailer, which MegaPhilX uploaded last year. It lays out the plot of the game and also shows gameplay footage:

MegaPhilX can’t say when they’ll be finished with the game, only that it will be released as a standalone PC app with support for both keyboards and game pads. Keep an eye on the Mega Man Unlimited website and Facebook page for updates on the game.

Capcom Creates Mega Man Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL Case

Capcom Creates Mega Man Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL Case

Nintendo announced it will be making two very cool looking Nintendo 3DS XLs available in June and July, but not to be outdone, Capcom has announced it won’t be offering its own unique Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL, but instead, will be producing a case to celebrate the anniversary of one of its most iconic characters.

The case Capcom will be producing is Mega Man-themed and will be available for both the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL as a way to continue the blue bomber’s 25th anniversary, which by our records should have ended last year. In any case, the Mega Man case looks to be made of a metallic material and prominently displays an 8-bit Mega Man on the front, while the back has a logo for Mega Man’s 25th anniversary. (more…)

Mega Man Plush Arm Blaster, Helmet Instantly Turns You Into The Blue Bomber

Mega Man Plush Arm Blaster, Helmet Instantly Turns You Into The Blue Bomber

We think it’s safe to say much of our audience enjoys a good video game every so often. The Mega Man series is one we’re also sure you’ve heard of as Capcom’s iconic blue bomber has appeared in a large library of games, that’s why when we saw this plush arm cannon and helmet, we know you’d certainly appreciate it.

Both of the Mega Man arm cannon pillow and helmet are available at E-Capcom for 6,090円 ($61.13 USD) and as you can see in the images, you not only can take a nap with either one, but you can also wear them to make you seem a lot less crazy when you tell people you are, in fact, Mega Man. Just remember that you need to stay at least 300 yards away from your next door neighbor who you insist looks just like Dr. Wily or else he could call his latest creation called “Police Man” to take you downtown and rough you up a bit.
