Meizu MX2 Is Now Official

It was slightly more than a week ago when we reported that we spotted the Meizu MX2 in the wild, and it did not take too long before this spanking new smartphone has become official. Yes sir, the Meizu MX2 has just been announced on an official basis, and underneath the hood, this bad boy packs in a quartet of 32nm Cortex-A9 CPU processors, accompanied by 2GB RAM, carry a 4.4″ display at WXGA resolution (which amounts to 1280 x 800 pixels) alongside a rather impressive 347 ppi pixel density. Shame that it does not fall under the phablet category to keep up with the times, but perhaps there is some good as well for it being a decent sized smartphone.

Apart from a speedier GPU, there is also Meizu’s version of Flyme 2.0 running on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Folks living in China will be able to get their hands on the Meizu MX2 when it hits retail shelves in that part of the world from the middle of December onward in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities, retailing for $400, $480 and $640, respectively – and these will no doubt be unlocked devices. There is no word on a global release of the Meizu MX2 just yet, so stay tuned.

Meizu MX2 packs 16GHz quadcore chip, 44inch display and Jelly Bean, due midDecember

Amidst the fierce competition in the Chinese mobile market, Meizu has managed to keep up with its annual cycle to unveil its latest flagship device, the MX2. Announced at the launch event in Beijing earlier today, the MX2 comes with a Samsung-made 1.6GHz, Cortex-A9 quad-core SoC dubbed “MX5S,” along with 2GB of RAM, a 30-percent faster GPU, a 4.4-inch 347ppi (1,280 x 800) gapless display with 3.15mm bezel and efficient “New Mode 2” technology (the description of which sounds like IGZO to us), an improved eight-megapixel BSI F/2.4 camera and a choice of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in memory. There’s also a front-facing camera, dual-mic noise cancellation, MHL video output, S/PDIF audio output, a non-removable 1,800mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0 and HSPA+ radio at 2,100MHz (2G at 900/1800). As before, the white double injection-molded back cover can be taken off to access the SIM card slot, but there should also be various color options in the near future. Read on for more info, and do also check out the official introduction video after the break.

Update: We now have some hands-on photos courtesy of Stone Ip from Engadget Chinese. They’re in the second gallery below.

Meizu MX2 Spotted?

Meizu does seem all set to make an announcement of the Meizu MX successor later this month, but some enterprising folks have managed to get a hold of hands-on images, leaking them to the Internet, of course, and creating quite the buzz along the way. It does seem as though the Meizu MX2 will do away with the overall design that tends to resemble that of the iPhone, in order to gain a character that it can call its own. You will no longer find any more physical controls located below the display, where these have been replaced by the now standard on-screen Android navigation controls.

Not only that, the display aspect ratio is no doubt very different at first glance. Meizu has decided to stick to the 3:2 display which is similar to what the iPhone has, although the resolution count seemed to have bumped up to 1280 x 768 from 960 x 640 pixels – which is always a good thing. Expect the Meizu MX2 to be powered by a quad-core processor, in addition to running Meizu’s Flyme skin on top of Android, which we hope it will be Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The Meizu MX2 will be announced in China officially this coming November 27th.

Meizu to unveil new flagship smartphone in Beijing

It’s that time of the year again. Meizu’s just sent out invitations for the upcoming launch of its new flagship device which, according to founder Jack Wong, will be dubbed MX2. While details are scarce, Wong previously mentioned that he’s still not interested in making tablets, but he’ll certainly be making a larger phone. In fact, Wong recently leaked a screenshot (posted after the break) that contained sketches of the new UI, but the screenshot itself came at a resolution of 1,280 x 800, which is rather different from the old 960 x 640 in terms of detail and aspect ratio. Considering that Wong had also expressed that there’s no point in going beyond 400ppi (ouch), chances are the MX2 will come with the more common 330ppi pixel density, which would give a 4.57-inch diagonal screen size; though 312ppi is also a possibility, which would make it a 4.8-inch device. Both options would still be sharper than the original 4-inch MX’s 292ppi. Whatever the truth is, we shall find out at the Beijing Water Cube on November 27, so stay tuned.

Meizu MX Review (Quad-core)

Most people in the USA have never heard of Meizu, and that’s because it is a Chinese company that has not yet entered the U.S market. However, they have made a name for themselves abroad by launching this cute quad-core phone: the Meizu MX.

The name stands for “M10″ and it was unveiled in December of 2011, then was launched several times in 2012 in a dual-core, then quad-core version. It had people lined up in front of stores, so we were really curious to get our hands on one. For some of you, this will be your first introduction to Meizu. For others, this review will bring additional details about the Meizu MX. But all of you should pay attention: this company is rising fast. (more…)

Meizu MX 4-core review

Meizu MX 4-core review

If it feels like yesterday you read our in-depth review of the dual-core Meizu MX, you’re not too far from the truth. In reality, it’s been just over seven months and we’ve already moved onto the smartphone’s quad-core sequel, aptly named the Meizu MX 4-core. Not only is it easy to confuse the two phones by name, but good luck trying to tell which one is which. Indeed, the two handsets are quite similar both inside and out, with the exception of some improvements in a couple rows on the ‘ol spec sheet.

The biggest surprise isn’t necessarily the speed with which the company cranked out a second MX, and it’s not even the reasonable price (HK$3,099, or US$400, or the 32GB version, and HK$4,099 / US$530 for the 64GB). Nope, it’s seeing Meizu, a manufacturer known for its copycat products, evolving into a relevant player beyond its native China. So how does this latest effort stack up? Read on to find out.

Next-generation Xiaomi Phone rumored to house quad-core processor, 720p display

Nextgeneration Xiaomi phone rumored to house quadcore processor, 720p display

Following last year’s launch of its potent, price-savvy Android smartphone, Xiaomi is already purportedly crafting its even more powerful successor. Alongside a bundle of blurry cam images, leaks from within factories making the next iteration say that it’ll pack a 720p screen, one of Qualcomm’s quad-core processors and a dual-flash setup alongside the camera. There’s still the curious absence of a front-facing camera, but this should to help ensure the phone lands with a price tag just as attractive as Xiaomi’s last device. While rival manufacturer Meizu priced its latest quad-core phone at around $480, the Foxconn-based moles reckon this next-generation (likely MIUI-powered) slab could land at just over of $300. If all these rumors (and that price) have piqued your interest, you can head on the source for a handful of extra images.

Meizu MX 4-core is new name for quad-core smartphone

Meizu was one of the first few companies to come up with what they call the iPhone killer, although it is without a doubt that Meizu failed in its objective. I am quite surprised to see the smartphone company last all the way till today, as I still have not seen any of my friends carry a single Meizu device all these years. Surely someone out there has been using Meizu phones to warrant the company not throwing in the towel? Well, the Meizu MX has just been renamed to the Meizu MX 4-core recently, where it will be made available for sale from June 30th onwards.

The 32GB model will retail for around $400 after conversion, while those who want double the storage space can settle for a $530 Meizu MX 4-core, or thereabouts. Forget about the 16GB model – it does not look likely at this point in time for such a capacity to be released. You will be able to choose from ivory white, milky lime, lilac purple and misty pink colors.
