Last-chance Expand ticket giveaway and congrats to our Photo Contest winner!

Lastchance Expand ticket giveaway and congrats to our Photo Contest winner!
In celebration of Expand, our first enormous electronics extravaganza next weekend at San Francisco’s Fort Mason, we’re giving away 5 pairs of tickets to 5 lucky @EngadgetExpand followers. This will be your last chance to score a free pass before the big event, so be sure to join us for this one!

Here’s how to enter: mention @EngadgetExpand in a tweet that also includes which session in the now fully-unveiled agenda you are most looking forward to. That might not be the easiest task, since there will be a lot going on at the show: from DJ Spooky‘s live performance to Veronica Belmont‘s appearance on the Sci-Fi panel to Make Magazine’s Mark Frauenfelder co-hosting the Insert Coin awards – and then some. To be eligible to enter, you must be 18 years of age and a U.S. resident (please peruse the full rules). Get your tweets in by midnight EST this Sunday night for your chance to win; we’ll choose 5 entries at random to each receive a free pair of tickets.

Come say hi at our first Engadget+gdgt Live event in Austin tomorrow night!

Come say hi at our first Engadget gdgt Live event in Austin tomorrow night!

As most of you know by now, we’ve recently welcomed some old friends back to the fold here at greater Aol Tech. We’re thrilled to be working with the gdgt crew on our first event together, tomorrow night in Austin during SXSW.

We’d love to have you join us for a night of fun gadgety action — take a break from your intense schedule of panels and booze buses and come on out to mingle with gdgt and Engadget staff, check out the devices our sponsors are bringing in spades (plus win some!) and have a great time with like-minded technophiles. It’s free to attend, and you don’t even need a SXSW badge to get in. The one catch: you must be 21 or over to come to this party (upside: open bar!), although our future events will be all ages.

See you there!

ComScore: Apple strengthens lead as top US handset maker in early 2013, Android takes a small hit

DNP ComScore Apple

The latest numbers from ComScore show Apple strengthening its lead as the top US handset maker, with the iPhone nabbing an estimated 37.8 percent of the market as of January 2013. That’s a 3.5-point boost from October of last year, putting healthy distance between Cupertino and the number-two smartphone maker, Samsung. That’s not to say the Korean giant hasn’t grown as well; its estimated 21.4-percent slice of the pie is up a more modest 1.9 points.

Apple’s growth on the hardware front naturally has implications on the software side, and indeed this is the first time Android took a hit while iOS grew. According to the survey, Google’s OS still maintains a healthy 52.3 percent compared to Apple’s 37.8, but it’s down 1.3 points while iOS saw a small boost. Where does that leave BlackBerry, Windows Phone and the rest of the gang? Pretty far behind — as you can see for yourself in the chart below the break.

Hey, Atlanta! Let Us Buy You Some Beer and Give You a Sneak Peek of Gizmodo’s Upcoming TV Special

We’re taking the literal Gizmodo TV show on the literal road to give you guys a chance to see some clips before we air on BBC America on March 18th. (10:20PM after Top Gear!) And because I know seeing my pasty mug isn’t enticement enough, we teamed up with our friends Matt Hardigree and Travis Okulski from Jalopnik, not just because we enjoy their company (they’re actually terrible), but because they’ve got the pull to let us travel in style: I’m writing this now from the heated back seats of a 470 HP 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT over its built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. Not too shabby. More »
