SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 28, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening, folks. A number of Samsung devices are threatened by Apple’s motion to ban their sale, but Samsung assured today that it will “take all necessary measures to ensure the availability” of those targeted devices in the US. Jury foreman Velvin Hogan spoke to Bloomberg about the Apple-Samsung trial today, discussing the difficulties the group ran into while trying to decide a winner in the case and the process of determining which company was in the right. It’s an interesting interview, so be sure to give it a watch.

On the same day that the NPD says that good tech service is the reason why Apple has so many repeat customers, a supposed Apple Genius training manual leaks, giving us a rare look at how Apple trains its employees. The T-Mobile Galaxy S II has been updated with support for NFC and Isis, and T-Mobile has some big plans for NFC. Speaking of T-Mobile, it looks like the company has a new plan to sell against the next iPhone when it (hopefully) launches next month. MetroPCS is offering a new phone to go along with its 4G LTE push, and Samsung has released a new Galaxy S III app aimed at making things easier for those who use their phone while driving.

The Nexus 7 has snuck onto the Google homepage, and the Google Election Hub is up and running today, offering coverage from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Nokia users worldwide were treated to Nokia Belle Refresh today, and it appears that Motorola and Apple are close to striking a licensing deal in Germany. It seems that the iPhone 5 won’t be getting NFC capabilities as originally rumored, Steve Perlman actually isn’t staying on as CEO of OnLive following the asset acquisition by a silent investor, and Google has a new patent for an object recognition system that could be huge. Hopefully you’re ready to play the role of homeowner, because in Skyrim‘s new DLC, you’ll be doing just that.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is getting a handful of new color variations – we’re partial to the grey, to be honest – while the company also gave us some more details about its incoming Series 5 all-in-one PC. Curiosity has beamed back some new images of Mars, which is always exciting, and Garmin detailed its new Forerunner 10 smart watch with GPS. Radio Shack’s wireless rates for no contract phone plans leaked today, and same-day delivery service Shutl has received a significant investment from the folks at UPS.

Finally tonight, we have a review of the Acer Aspire V5 from Cory Gunther for you to check out. Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday evening everyone!

MetroPCS continues 4G LTE assault with Coolpad Quattro

A brand new smartphone has been revealed by the folks at MetroPCS complete with mid-range specifications for those looking to keep their pocketbooks full while they access 4G LTE data speed. This device is the Coolpad Quattro 4G, and it’s one of two 4G LTE-capable smartphones on the carrier this summer. This device works with a 4-inch display, single-core 1GHz processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

With MetroPCS ramping up efforts to bring 4G LTE to the USA on a network that’s not quite expansive enough to compete with the big guns, a set of two smartphones may be just what they need to stay steady. There’s also a device called LG Motion 4G on the market now for as low as $99 – it’s also a mid-range Android smartphone working on their burgeoning 4G LTE network. Details on the LG Motion 4G can be found in our post last week on the birth of the network’s new connectivity announcement.

Meanwhile you’ll be paying $150 USD for this smartphone working with such features as a microSD card slot, wi-fi connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS navigation, and a 1,600 mAh battery – more than likely much more than enough to keep you powered up for a full day at a time. This device can be purchased and paired with the carrier’s $55 USD a month rate plan with 4G LTE, and is also part of a buy-two-get-rebate plan.

If you purchase two of these devices – or one of these and an LG Motion 4G smartphone – you’ll qualify for a $50 mail-in rebate. Sounds like a deal! Have a peek at your local MetroPCS retailer immediately if not soon to grab em both!

MetroPCS reveals Samsung Galaxy S III as part of fall lineup

MetroPCS reveals Samsung Galaxy S III as part of fall lineup

Turns out the LG Motion 4G wasn’t all that MetroPCS had up its sleeve for reveal today, as the prepaid carrier separately let its new fall lineup slip, and wouldn’t you know it, among those devices is the Samsung Galaxy S III. Joining the superphone will be a smaller Sammy smartphone, and like the LG Connect 4G, it’ll support VoLTE — curious that the carrier isn’t touting the feature for the Galaxy S III, don’t you think? ZTE will also be making another go at MetroPCS, as an Android handset with a 4.3-inch screen is now in the cards, but other relevant specs remain sorely absent. Rounding out the lineup will be an import from Coolpad, which is said to wield a 4-inch screen and will retail for $149. According to Phone Scoop, we may see this one make an official debut later this week. Naturally, none of these slabs carry the same clout as the Galaxy S III, and if you’d like to get a bit more familiar with the soon-to-be premiere smartphone at MetroPCS, be sure to check out PC Magazine below, which managed to score a hands-on with the latest version of Samsung’s finest.

MetroPCS announces new 4G LTE plan, reveals LG Motion 4G

MetroPCS has a new 4G LTE offer for those of you who want unlimited data but don’t want to pay out the nose. Announced today, its new 4G LTE plan will cost $55 per month for unlimited talk, text, and of course, 4G LTE data. Everything plans are nothing new, but MetroPCS President Thomas Keys assures CNET that there are “no strings” attached with this one.

Keys also says that there isn’t a solid cut off date for this particular promotion, claiming that the end date will be determined by how popular the plan is with consumers. To go along with your new 4G LTE plan, MetroPCS will also be offering the freshly-revealed LG Motion 4G. Paying $149 (with a two-year contract, naturally) will net you a 3.5-inch HVGA display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera, and a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor. This just so happens to be the carrier’s first ICS smartphone, and while it isn’t going to be something smartphone fanatics go crazy over, it will be enough for newcomers who are looking to get in on the 4G action.

If you’re in need of some kind of family plan, MetroPCS will let you share the 4G everything plan with up to three other devices for an additional $50 per phone. The company is also currently offering rebates when you buy a second 4G phone, and the LG Motion 4G is indeed included in that offer. It appears that this promotion will be going live on the MetroPCS website later on this week, so be sure to keep an eye out for that if you’re interested in signing up.

If there truly aren’t any strings attached, then this sounds like it could be a good deal. If it’s successful, MetroPCS stands a pretty good shot at giving the other, larger carriers a run for their money. We should be seeing just how successful this 4G LTE promotion is soon, so stay tuned.

LG Motion 4G for MetroPCS hands-on (video)

LG Motion 4G for MetroPCS handson video

The recent unveiling of that LTE-loaded Galaxy S Lightray doesn’t appear to have slowed down MetroPCS, as the Texas-born carrier’s quickly following up with yet another 4G handset to bring to its growing smartphone portfolio. Enter the economical 3.5-incher LG Motion 4G. Unlike the aforementioned offering from Samsung, however, the wallet-friendly network’s now betting high on selling this new handset on the cheap and, naturally, is flaunting the “4G LTE For All” unlimited access as one of the device’s biggest traits. But how exactly does it stack up in the real world? Well, the good news is we were amongst a select group of folks gathered at Manhattan’s Andaz, and were lucky enough to take it for a quick spin. So head on past the break to get a better feel for our first, early-on impressions of MetroPCS’ newest Android slab.

MetroPCS outs LG Motion 4G in tandem with unlimited all-you-can-eat plan

MetroPCS outs LG Motion 4G in tandem with unlimited allyoucaneat plan

LTE doesn’t have to mean premium pricing — just ask MetroPCS. The budget carrier, notable for its recent launch of VoLTE, has announced the availability of a limited time promo service bundling unlimited voice, text and data dubbed Wireless for All. And to help give that initiative a proper public splash, the company’s tossed in some new kit: LG’s Motion 4G. That handset, a humble 3.5-incher, is actually the first Android 4.0 device to bow on the company’s lineup and bears a familiar dual-core CPU setup clocked at 1.2GHz, HVGA display, 5GB of internal storage (expandable to 32GB via microSD), a 5-megapixel rear camera capable of 1080p video and 1,700mAh battery. As ICS handsets come, it’s certainly no big leaguer, but at $149, plus the addition of that all-you-can eat $55/mo plan, it’s hard to find fault with affordable. Skip on past the break to peruse the company’s official presser.

MetroPCS launches world’s first commercially available VoLTE smartphone

The smartphone in question is the LG Connect 4G Android device, and it is available in select MetroPCS stores around the country. The wireless carrier says it will continue to roll out VoLTE service and additional handsets in the coming weeks.

MetroPCS launches first Voice over LTE service in the world

MetroPCS might not be one of the major four mobile carriers here in the US, but that does not mean their small size makes them relatively unimportant to the overall scheme of things where smartphones and mobile services are concerned. In fact, MetroPCS is proud to announce that they are offering the first Voice over LTE service in the world, calling it VoLTE for short. This particular “achievement” would mean MetroPCS has beat South Korea’s SK Telecom to the claim by a day, which is pretty close to the chase.

Do take note that majority of the US carriers do not have plans penciled in to adopt VoLTE as part of their operations on a wide scale basis, at least not until next year, but I guess MetroPCS’ management wants to gain the early mover advantage in order to prop up their earnings call in February. According to MetroPCS, another historical first involved the maiden first VoLTE-compatible handset being sold at one of its Dallas/Fort Worth stores in Texas. Do you foresee yourself  picking up a VoLTE compatible smartphone down the road? [Press Release]

MetroPCS may not be grand in scale, but it’s certainly not lacking for ambition. Just over a year after announcing its eventual transition to Voice over LTE, the carrier has officially launched its VoLTE services. Moreover, it’s announcing the first sale of a VoLTE-capable handset at one of the company’s Dallas / Fort Worth store locations. The Android-powered LG Connect 4G is the outfit’s first (and only, for now) VoLTE-capable phone, but the operator’s promising more rollouts and phone options “in the coming weeks.” For the consumer, those in range of LTE signals should notice clearer calls, and it’s become something of a trend to see carriers (Verizon and Sprint, for instance) moving in this direction as 2G / 3G networks start to show their age. So, DFW residents — anyone been able to try it out? Let us know in comments below.
