ID@Xbox Self Publishing Program Kicks Off Early Next Year

We reported back in July that Microsoft had confirmed that its latest gaming console, the Xbox One, will support self-publishing. The decision to allow developers to self-publish games for Xbox One would open up the door to a plethora of indie games for Microsoft’s new console. Today, a list of developers who have already signed up for ID@Xbox was made public and the company also revealed that the first self-published games will be out early next year.

The company also announced that Unity ID will be free for all Xbox One developers, and that it is continuing to work behind the scenes to “set up the system” which would allow any retail Xbox One unit to work as a dev kit. Large-scale and well known developers who have signed up for ID@Xbox include Crytek of Ryse: Son of Rome fame, who now wants to pursue self-publishing after having developed this popular game for Microsoft Studios. Definition 6 is a one man show by Chris Hecker, who is developing a title for Xbox One called “Spy Party.” It goes without saying that ID@Xbox will allow anyone and everyone capable of developing a game to get their title onto the popular console. Microsoft says that it has been “blown away” by interest in this program and that we’re bound to see a “wide selection of innovative titles” for Xbox One next year.
