MiiPC offers backers double the memory for $15, throws in a free mic

With a week left in an already successful Kickstarter campaign (approaching three times its initial $50,000 goal), the makers of the MiiPC are giving backers the chance to increase their system’s memory. Add $15 before the close of the project and you’ll be able to double things up, from 1GB to 2GB of RAM and 4GB to 8GB of storage — the move comes in response to pledger feedback, according to the company. And speaking of listening, the makers of the parental-friendly Android PC are also tossing in a free built-in mic for those who pre-ordered, just for good measure.

MiiPC is a spanking new Kickstarter project

Another day, another interesting idea arrives on crowdsourcing website Kickstarter, and we have the MiiPC this time around. No, do not be mistaken that this could very well be some sort of computer that was developed by the folks over at Nintendo, after all, with the word “Mii” in it, some folks could be fooled into thinking that way. The MiiPC was launched by Young Song , the founder of eMachines. Young hopes to be a positive yet disruptive force in the traditional PC market by rolling out the first family computer that is based on the Android platform, although he requires the help of Kickstarter and its backers to get the job done.

The MiiPC has been priced from $89 as part of a Kickstarter early bird discount, and just in case you were wondering what the MiiPC is able to do, it enables parents to give their little ones access to the Internet, all the while ensuring that these very kids of theirs will remain under supervision using a companion mobile app. Safe surfing of the Internet, so to speak, which would definitely result in peace of mind for parents who fret more than the others. You cannot attach a price tag to peace of mind, can you? At least, even if your child learned something undesirable from the Internet when they are not under your watch, you know you have done your best.

The MiiPC will arrive with a HDMI connection, allowing it to be connected to computer monitors as well as the majority of modern TVs out there in the market. Apart from that, a couple of USB ports would optimize the entire experience, delivering a true keyboard and mouse experience. With access to the MiiPC companion mobile app round the clock, you will be able to enjoy complete peace of mind as you monitor your kids’ real-time activities regardless of where you are, as long as you remain connected to the Internet, of course. MiiPC will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice.

Insert Coin: MiiPC promises a kid-safe Android PC that allows surfing, gaming for $99 (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.

Insert Coin MiiPC promises a parentmonitored PC that lets your kids surf for $100

If there’s one thing that smartphones have taught us, it’s that small devices can surf the internet and play games just fine, thank you. With that philosophy in mind, the brains behind eMachines have launched the $99 MiiPC on Kickstarter with the goal of giving kids their own mini PC to surf the web, play games or videos, and, yes, do homework. To keep costs down, the tiny device is packing Android 4.2, a Marvell 1.2GHZ dual core CPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB upgradeable storage, WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, ethernet and 1080p HDMI output to a monitor or TV. The backers say it’s “designed for large screen connectivity and optimized to provide a true keyboard and mouse experience” so that each family member can run Android apps from their own accounts. For worried parents, the device brings an interesting twist: there’s also a mobile iOS or Android companion app to monitor your offspring in real-time from any locale. That’ll let you steer them away from verboten websites and stave off dreaded internet addiction, according to the outfit — bearing in mind, of course, that kids can be pretty clever. The campaign’s just kicked off, and MiiPC’s seeking $50,000 with a $99 pledge ($89 for the first 200 backers) netting you your own device — sans keyboard, mouse and screen, of course. Check the video or PR after the break for more.
