Near silent hybrid electric motorcycle in the works

logosThe military certainly has its fair share of “big boys’ toys”, so to speak, where there are weapons and technology which the world knows nothing about – unless it is by chance or force that such weapons and technological wizardry are revealed. In fact, the advancement of technology in recent years have done a whole lot to change the map of the battlefield – pilotless drones are now used to scout an area ahead of time, as well as to deliver a payload without risking the life of a human being sitting inside a real cockpit, and GPS too, has helped missiles be even more accurate. As for getting around, well, tanks and planes aren’t exactly the quietest rides in town, but how about motorcycles? Logos Technologies has received a small business innovation research (SBIR) grant from DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in order to work on a military-use hybrid-electric motorcycle that has near-silent capability.

It is hoped by DARPA that this particular technology, when it matures fully, will enable tiny, distributed military teams to move long distances in the shortest time possible, all the while remaining stealth as they make their way across harsh enemy terrain.

Specially developed in partnership with San Francisco-based all-electric motorcycle producer BRD, this particular platform will merge Logos Technologies’ quieted, multifuel hybrid-electric power system alongside a cutting-edge, off-road electric motorcycle platform that has been developed by BRD. This particular initiative is said to be the first time that a two-wheel-drive, multifuel hybrid capability has been integrated into a full-size off-road motorcycle – successfully, to boot.

The hybrid-electric idea also paves the way for extended periods of near-silent, electric-only-propulsion, in addition to the generation of supplemental electric power for use by personnel in the field. No idea on how much such a bike will cost eventually, but if it is going to help win wars, there is no price tag issue left anymore, is there?

Pentagon To Recycle Old Drones As Wi-Fi Hotspots

pentagon-drone-wifiThe Pentagon has plans to breath new life into old drones, and they will do so by transforming these once loyal servants into Wi-Fi hotspots. Of course, using drones as a Wi-Fi hotspot is not exactly the newest idea on the block, and neither does it elicit an “Eureka!” moment, but it is interesting to see how this might change the face of battle in a war. Normally, the equipment that is required for long-range high-bandwidth Wi-Fi is more often than not unavailable to troops in the field. With some modifications made, engineers do hope that this will change, offering airborne Wi-Fi hotspots which allows isolated troops to have a decent data connection.

This does seem to be pretty much in vein with that of Facebook’s initiative to deliver their Connectivity Lab idea to the world, blanketing even remote areas with Wi-Fi connectivity, although critics of this program have (justifiable) fears that such drones could be the weak point when it comes to security.

On the flipside, if this program takes off successfully (pun not intended), then troops on the battlefield will be able to gain access to a secure, stable and fast internet connection. Dick Ridgway, Darpa programme manager shared, “We’re pleased with the technical achievements we’ve seen so far in steerable millimetre-wave antennas and millimetre-wave amplifier technology. These successes – and the novel networking approaches needed to maintain these high-capacity links – are key to providing forward deployed units with the same high-capacity connectivity we all enjoy over our 4G cell-phone networks.”

The initial phases of this particular drone transformation program would include smaller, steerable antennas; signal boosters; increased power efficiency and a light pod that will allow the device to be carried without burdening the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) itself. It is said that this network could very well hit the 1 gigabit per-second (Gb/s) capacity, making it as fast as Google Fiber’s. Tweets and Facebook updates directly from the battlefield, yo!

Porton Man takes all the knocks so soldiers won’t need to

porton-manWhen it comes to modern day technology, especially in the field of war, you know that plenty of advances have been made, so much so that what used to be thought up of as science fiction can actually pass off for something real in this day and age. Well, surely all of the high tech military equipment that we have seen so far would have had to be tested, and do live soldiers actually have a role to play in all of it? Fret not, we have robots to get the job done for us. Case in point – the Porton Man, which is a robotic mannequin that is capable of running, sitting down, kneeling, and even mimic the movement of a soldier.

Recently unveiled by the Ministry of Defence, the Porton Man costs £1.1 million a pop, where it has been specially developed using Formula 1 technology, with the main purpose of its existence being to test out protective suits and equipment. Sporting more than a hundred sensors that are strategically located all over its body, these sensors would be used to record data during tests. Developers of the Porton Man claim that it would be able to help them come up with the next generation of protective equipment.

According to the Ministry of Defence, such an animatronic mannequin happens to be unique to the UK. It was developed for the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), where clothing systems for soldiers were tested against chemical warfare agents. The Porton Man robot mannequin is flexible enough to raise its arms to imitate signals given by soldiers, with the ability to march and kneel, too. I wonder just how lifelike its movement would be, and is it capable of bring the viewers into the uncanny valley? The Ministry of Defence has kept their fingers crossed that the latest generation of robot mannequins will be able to do its bit in helping produce a new, lighter protective suit for the military.

The Pocket Grappling Hook isn’t practical for every day use, but looks cool

Grappling Hook
We have a fanciful version of what being a spy is like in our heads. Attending high-class parties, driving awesome cars, being the object of affection to many, and fighting off enemies in style. Having the right equipment for the job is one thing, but actually carrying out that job is another thing entirely. You need to be fit, stealthy, have nerves of steel, and of course, the cool gizmos help (though resourcefulness is likely more useful than a utility belt).

Regardless of that information, we like to have nifty spy gear around in the exceedingly off-chance we can find a use for it. The Pocket Grappling Hook is one such item that won’t fit the use you have for it in your head, but can have real-world use. This was created to snag trip wires from a safe distance, rather than repelling up or down the walls of a secure facility.

Before anyone asks, no, this is not meant to hold you up, and definitely shouldn’t be used for life support functions. The spikes can unscrew and be stowed inside of the water resistant O-ring body. If you need it to be heavier when you throw it, simply fill it with dirt or water and toss away. This will cost you $35, and won’t serve any real purpose other than aesthetics unless you actually find yourself in need of snagging trip wires on the regular.

Available for purchase on countycomm, found via thisiswhyimbroke

Evena Medical – New “Eyes On” Glasses get Under your Skin

Evena-Smart-Glasses

If you’ve ever been to the doctor and had your blood drawn you know that every now and then it’s a hit or miss proposition. Sure, most of the time it’s no big deal, but you’ll remember for weeks to come when they couldn’t find a vein and you left the office bruised and sore. Aging, and certain illnesses or accidents can cause a blood draw, or IV placement to become very difficult… and sometimes, seconds count.

Check out Evena’s Eyes On Glasses, this new, patented, wearable technology, provides the medical community with high definition, anatomically accurate real-time viewing of a patients veins using multi-spectral imaging and an easy-to-use ultrasound for identifying deeper veins. Imagine that the next time you have bloodwork done or need an IV placed, your medical team could actually be looking at a map of your veins. What a relief!

The same technology is being utilized in rugged service equipment specially designed for use by military field medics and physicians, as you can imagine these men and women are often in challenging and inhospitable environments with serious injuries that require immediate attention in the field, including proper IV access in order to be able to quickly and accurately provide life-saving therapy for injured soldiers.

This new technology not only saves lives, but improves patient comfort, and allows doctors to have full awareness of their patient, as the glasses are battery powered with a belt mounted computer, allowing complete maneuverability,  eye contact with both the patient, and the doctors areas of concern.

Ka-Bar “Zomstro” Zombie Chopper…just in case a zombie apocalypse breaks out

ka-barZombies happen to be part of the undead “family” that does not really strike fear into the hearts of the masses, not unless they start stumbling out in a large group, that is. Of course, where you augment them with super speed just as you find in World War Z, then those are definitely a terrifying bunch to deal with. Let’s just say that should a zombie apocalypse happens one fine day, leaving you with a Walking Dead scenario, then you would do well to be proficient in hand-to-hand combat and weapons, as you would want to dispatch of these brain loving undead quietly so that you draw as little attention to you as possible.

This is where the $129.99 Ka-Bar “Zomstro” Zombie Chopper comes in handy – it has been described to be a “zombie chopping cleaver” for survivors only (but of course!), sporting a fixed blade that measures an impressive 10.25” in length, and is proudly made in the USA out of 1095 Cro-Van steel. It includes zombie green handles, stealth black handles, a backup knife a with 3.25” blade for the more delicate jobs out there, a durable nylon sheath with belt loop and accessory pouch, 9′ of zombie green paracord, and an additional handle mounting hardware, not to mention a Ka-Bar “Zombie Knives” velcro patch. I suppose someone like Daryl Dixon would be most at home with this once his crossbow goes kaput. You know what they say – better safe than sorry, and be prepared!

Apollo AP1 Tactical Flashlight will light up your life

There are a lot of things that we take for granted in life. It’s not until they’re stripped away suddenly, that we really appreciate some of the most basic things. We’ve had some pretty bad storms over the last month where I live, and when the power goes out, you suddenly miss all of that light that was previously flooding every room. Suddenly flashlights, candles, and your cell phone are your best friends. Of course, things like flashlights are useful in more situations than just around the house when the power is out. So why not get one that is versatile, and can work in just about any situation?

The Apollo AP-1 Tactical Flashlight promises to be the the last flashlight you’ll ever need. This compact light is capable of providing nearly 1000 lumens of light, which can illuminate objects from over ¼ mile away. Check out the video below for a really cool demonstration of that feature.

The light has five different modes of illumination, which are high, medium, low, strobe and S.O.S. On the lowest setting you can get around 20 hours of light, and still an impressive hour while on the highest. The device is rugged, and can withstand most punishment that you dish out. It is tested to resist drops up to 1.5 meters, and can be submerged in water up to 20 meters deep. To get one of your own, you’ll need to pledge $99 to the Kickstarter project. It has already surpassed its goal many times over, so no need to worry about that. Expect to get yours sometime in October of this year.

Mace Pepper Gun – Packing Heat!

I worry about personal safety, not so much for myself, but for my little girl. She’s only 10 now so I’m with her most of the time, but someday she’ll be off to the mall, or worse… off to college and all alone. *sniff* I don’t know how I’m gonna handle it, but it would be easier if I knew how to make her safer.

I’m hoping that some strides will have been made in personal safety products by then, but in the meantime check out the Mace Pepper Gun. Touted as one of the most accurate defense sprays around, the Mace Pepper Gun utilizes a replaceable, bag-in-a-can cartridge that allows users to spray a constant stream of liquid agony, well over 20 feet. The Mace Pepper Gun also employs a trigger activated LED light that not only lets you see who you’re aiming at, but may in fact blind, or disorient the attacker before you even get a chance to shoot him in the face!

Of course the Mace Pepper Gun has a safe/fire mechanism that should prevent you, or someone you love from accidentally discharging the pepper spray on themselves and the chemical cartridges are easily replaced when they are empty. Each Mace Pepper Gun comes complete with batteries, a 28 Gram OC cartridge, as well as a water cartridge, so you can test-fire your gun and become familiar with how it works, well before the need arises.

So if you’d like a little portable protection, that seems a whole lot less scary than an actual firearm, head over to amazon.com and look at the Mace Pepper Gun, it’s only around 40 bucks and comes in 2 different shades of blue, as well as pink or silver. Go ahead, make my day!

US Navy gets laser cannon of their own

When do we see lasers in action? Well, most of the time, lasers are depicted in science fiction movies sometime in the far off future, where mankind has explored the galaxies far and wide, bringing along with them their sense of adventure and warfare (it is inevitable, as the entire universe is atrophying, so resisting conflict would be futile), and in a case of self-defense (or offense for some), a quick laser shot would do the trick nicely. Star Trek has their phasers, while the X-Wings in the Star Wars universe will see lasers shot from the tips of the S-Foils. The thing is, when will such high tech warfare and weaponry arrive on planet earth? It seems that the answer is “in the right here and now”, where the US Navy has already received its very own kind of laser cannon that has made short work of drones bobbing away in a distance, and said laser cannons can be fitted to active warships.

The US Navy will obviously start to fit their own ships that sail the seven seas with lasers, touting that this represents the future of warfare. Also known as the Laser Weapon System or Laws for short, it has seen action in testing areas, shooting down drones, and considering how it relies on electricity to fire, it costs under $1 per shot – which should be as efficient in disabling a small vessel on the sea, and when you compare it to a $475,000 Sidewinder missile, it makes a whole lot more economical sense to implement Laws throughout their fleet, no?

Interestingly enough, the prototype is not expensive either, where it costs less than $40 million to make, which is a drop in the ocean that the US call their defense budget. It will be installed aboard the USS Ponce, where said vessel has been assigned to the status of a floating base in the Middle East, although this is set to happen sometime after October this year. The Navy has hope that incoming missiles will be unable to outmanoeuvre a highly accurate laser beam that is fired at the speed of light, and for the controller, this could very well be a video game of sorts, although real lives are at stake.
