These are awesome action figures of the player’s avatar in Minecraft. If you play the game then these are also action figures of yourself. Although you can’t customize Steve’s skin, he – or she – does have a ball-jointed head and poseable arms.

Play Minecraft With Your Eyes Via Minecon Demo

They say that one’s eyes are the window to a soul, but with the Minecon demo, your eyes play another role, although not as important as letting you see, but it enables you to take control of the world of Minecraft using your sight alone, thanks to 4tiitoo and Tobii. Tobii Technology, the current global leader in eye tracking and gaze interaction, has teamed up with 4tiitoo, a pioneer in developing natural user experience-focused software solutions, to deliver this demo version of Minecraft that relies on your eyes’ gaze alone to play the game. This demo will be on display at the Intel booth at Minecon, the official Minecraft event, this coming November 24th to 25th at the Disneyland Resort, Paris, so if you are in the vicinity during those dates, you might want to mosey down there and take a literally closer look.

Tore Meyer, CEO of 4tiitoo, said, “Through the implementation of natural user interaction, particularly gaze, we are able to push the physical game controls to the background, allowing players to experience an immersive, fun and unparalleled gaming environment. We are excited about the opportunity to show gamers the new possibilities of our NUIA SDK, and we are looking forward to applying our technology to numerous applications in the near future.”

Educators battle Eternal September by teaching digital citizenship with MinecraftEdu

Eternal September is now somewhat of an antiquated term, but its relevance as a concept is nonetheless alive and kicking on the internet today. Once upon a time, September was the month when a whole new group of individuals — primarily college students — were introduced to Usenet discussion boards, and many took a few bruises as they were introduced to online etiquette. Eventually, tightly knit digital communities became unable to cope with the deluge of new users, and it’s said that online discourse has never fully recovered. So the saying goes, we now live in Eternal September.

As proof that not all hope is lost, developers and educators are now collaborating on a project known as MinecraftEdu, which aims to teach digital citizenship in the classroom. Through virtual interaction with others, the game exposes students to a wide variety of concepts such as ethics, privacy, research and safety. From there, educators are able to use the in-game experiences to lead discussions that focus on protecting oneself and taking responsibility for one’s actions. In effort to reinforce these concepts, developers are also integrating quizzes and lesson reviews into MinecraftEdu. Much like the real world, Minecraft’s open-ended style is thought to demonstrate that an online community is what you make of it, and as development progresses, perhaps we’ll all come to benefit from its lessons. In the meantime, you can stick your nose into these forward-thinking classrooms with the video below.

FigurePrints will make your Minecraft creation a reality

We’ve seen many dedicated Minecraft gamers recreate some pretty amazing things, like a recreation of the World of Warcraft and etc. At the same time there are Minecraft gamers who have come up with their own creations and if you thought that your Minecraft creation deserves to be made a reality, you might just get your wish. The folks at FigurePrints have announced that they will now be able to offer Minecraft gamers the chance to 3D print their Minecraft creations. According to FigurePrints’ founder, Ed Fries, this is possible thanks to a custom software he wrote that let us view the Minecraft world — it can detect anything that is floating and that solves a lot of problems, it can fill in parts that are completely enclosed and it can shell parts to make it less expensive. There’s a lot that’s automated into the tool itself.”

Your custom Minecraft prints will vary of course depending on the size and the complexity of your creation, but it is expected to be around the $100 mark, give or take. For those unfamiliar with FigurePrints, they are a company that specializes in 3D printing and have in the past allowed World of Warcraft gamers to create 3D replicas of their characters from the game. More information about FigurePrints and their services can be found on their website.

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition major update arriving soon

Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition is one of those hits that went beyond the wildest expectations of everyone, never mind the fact that we more or less knew that it was going to be popular, the question was just, how much? 4J Studios did release a major update to the Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition last month, but with the burgeoning number of players as well as wanting to give more of the Minecraft experience to gamers, the developer are working hard to release yet another major update that is touted to arrive in the coming weeks.

The list of changes and fixes that will arrive on Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition in the coming weeks is a rather exhaustive and extensive one, but here are just a few to whet your appetite in the brick building game. There is the option to toggle the HUD off/on, to turn the player hand off/on, to have a crafting recipe for Golden Apples as well as Pumpkin Seeds among others.

Creeper Coffee Mug Is Oddly Square and Oddly Satisfying

Creepers always ruin your hard-earned progress in Minecraft, and it’s time to take revenge.  Don’t be a cotton-headed ninnymuggins, get the Creeper Coffee Mug, which has the face of your (least) favorite Minecraft monster printed on its side.  Whether you enjoy jumping up in fear whenever you look at your coffee mug or if you plant to take a sledgehammer to the thing, everyone at work will appreciate your sense of style, and it’s not because of the skinny tie your wearing.  “But everyone said they liked my skinny tie!”  They also said you looked like Jabba The Hutt when you dressed up as the green lantern last Halloween.

As you can see, the Creeper mug isn’t your typical coffee mug, but it is your typical “captured a Creeper and DRILLED A HOLE THROUGH ITS SKULL TO CREATE A RESERVOIR FOR MY COFFEE.”  While that may be a little harsh at the moment, next time you strike diamond and then get destroyed by a Creeper, revisit your thinking and make another judgement.

You can pick up this wonderfully geeky coffee mug for about $21(USD) in about 3-4 weeks, but you can pre-order it now to ensure your satisfaction in the future.  Not everything involves instant gratification, you know, and patience is a bird-chew.  “Is it?  Is it a bird-chew?”  I believe it is, my friend, I believe it is.  Cleaned it off my windshield yesterday.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: October 26, 2012

Welcome to Friday evening, everyone. Today was a pretty big day in the world of tech, with both Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface launching and the iPad mini going up for pre-order. Microsoft was actually handing out £50 coupons to the Microsoft Store for giving those in the UK who pre-ordered a Surface conflicting messages about when it will ship, and the company even managed launch Xbox Smartglass for Android alongside Surface and Windows. Microsoft said it will be giving Windows 8 Pro users a free upgrade to Media Center, while Steven Sinofsky talked up the company’s new products, managing to get a couple of shots in at Apple at the same time.

On the Apple side of things, iPad mini pre-orders went pretty quick today, but not as fast as Apple devices normally go, leaving us to wonder if Apple finally managed to get stock issues right or if the iPad mini just isn’t all that popular. We heard that iPad mini LTE models could arrive as early as November 21, and Apple was seen knocking PC manufacturers for being afraid to drop old technology.

Of course, it would have been a very strange news day if there weren’t any new Nexus leaks, but thankfully we had a couple big ones to report. One Google employee apparently used the camera on the back of the Nexus 10 to snap pictures on his vacation, while we got to see the tablet up close and personal in a series of new leaked photos. Speaking of Google, the company released a new video showing new Windows 8 users how to quickly install Google search and Chrome onto their machines, and we received a new Google Maps update that adds colored terrain, which is a pretty cool feature if you ask us.

There’s a particularly scary Borderlands 2 exploit making the rounds, while Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition players got a skins pack featuring a whopping 55 Halloween-themed skins for just two smackers. Nintendo introduced a new Charizard 3DS XL that’s sure to be super rare, and GameStop announced that it will be opening a number of retail stores aimed at young children. Paul Ceglia was arrested for fraud after it was determined that he forged documents saying he was entitled to a huge stake in Facebook, and Volvo was touting its traffic jam self-driving technology today. Netflix detailed its Windows 8 app today too, so have a look at the company’s new video if you want to get familiar of all of the new features.

We’re almost done with the Wrap-Up, but before we go, be sure to have a look at the original articles that went up today. Chris Davies tells us why he’s cancelled his Microsoft Surface pre-order, while Chris Burns asks if Apple will adopt wireless charging technology if Google introduces it in its Nexus line. Burns also got the chance to interview famed artist Futura at a recent Samsung event, so don’t miss that one! That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you have an excellent weekend!

Minecraft Xbox 360 gets 55 Halloween skins, proceeds go to charity

Tis the seasons for ghouls, ghasts, and perhaps most importantly, candy. Halloween is right around the corner, and to celebrate, Mojang and 4J studios have released a pack of 55 Halloween-themed skins for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. The skins were put together by a number of different studios, including Mojang, 343 Industries, and Rare.

Even better is that this skins pack is cheap – we’re talking just 160 MSP, of $2 for those of you who prefer real-world terms. All of the money made from this DLC will be going to charity, so not only can you get 55 Minecraft skins on the cheap, but you can feel good about the fact that the money you paid will be going to a good cause. PlayXBLA says that the profits will be split up four ways, going to Block by Block, SANDS Lothians, Child’s Play, and Macmillan Cancer Support, and you find out more about each by clicking here.

The list of skins is long and varied, with a number of different developers (both indie and big-time) contributing to this pack. Have a look at the full list below, which includes the developers and each of the skins they’re responsible for:

• 343 Industries: Vampire
• 4J Studios: The Grim Reaper, Devil, Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Werewolf, Ghost, Evil Wizard, Bride of Dracula, Bride of Frakenstein, Ghoul, Scary Clown
• Army of Trolls: Dracula, Frakenstien, Pumpkin, Skeleton, Mummy, Wolfman
• Climax Studios: Zombie Businessman, Cyclops, Evil Clown, Evil Robot, Vampire Girl, Grey, Headless Horseman, Lizard Man, Scarecrow, Scary Nom, Mad Scientist, Skeleton, Witch Doctor, Zombie
• Mojang: Evil Robot
• Owlchemy Labs: Zombie Jack Lumber
• Press Play: Evil Lemmy, Evil Max
• Rare: Gregg the Grim Reaper, Ancient Mummy, Zippy Zombie
• Ronimo Games: Zombie Lonestar
• Ska Studios: Cyborg Pumpkinhead, Mara
• Tequila Works: Mining Unit 010, Jacko, Bonny
• The Behemoth: Hatty
• Toylogic: Happy Zombie Cleric, Happy Zombie Mage, Happy Zombie Warrior
• Twisted Pixel Games: Captain Zombie, The Gunstringer, Ms. Splosion Man Mask, Skelly, Splodeton

That certainly isn’t bad for just $2, but to be honest, we think 4J could have charged more, considering the fact that 55 skins are included in this pack and the profits are all going to charity. The pack goes on sale today, but if you want it, you’ll have to act quick – it’ll only be available until November 26. Are you picking up the Halloween Skin Pack for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition?
