ZTE launches Nubia range of high-end devices, announces Z5 quad-core smartphone

ZTE unveils highend Nubia mobile line, launches Z5 quadcore, 13megapixel, Italian design

ZTE’s plan to reinvent itself as a high-end smartphone was missing one, crucial ingredient — a European-sounding name that ended in “…ia” to brand its new range of top-level devices. That’s why the company has just announced Nubia, which apparently means “cloudy” in Latin. It’s also teased details of the first handset to arrive under this new cloud (geddit?), the Z5. This new 5-inch smartphone will have quad-core internals, a 13-megapixel camera and “Italian” design — which makes us hope above hope that they hired Pininfarina and it’ll come in Ferrari Red.

Wii U Deluxe Digital Promotion will give gamers a $5 credit for every $50 spent on downloads

If a copy of Nintendo Land, 32GB of internal memory and a black paint job weren’t enough for you to drop an extra $50 for the Wii U Deluxe Set, Nintendo’s hoping fresh details on its Deluxe Digital Promotion will further sweeten the pot. Yelp’s new picture-heavy menus give you a better look at that Baby Back Rib Tickler

Yelp's new pictureheavy menus give you a better look at that Baby Back Rib Tickler

Needless to say, we’re all well aware of Yelp’s popularity amongst people who love a thing or two about visiting restaurants and, in turn, eating some good ol’ food. And while the service could be considered relatively great as is, it never hurts to see a few new features added here and there — especially one as useful as the new “Explore the Menu,” which is made possible by everyday users like yourself. The newfangled menu system will allow folks to upload pictures of any grub item they’ve tried at frequented restaurants, making it easier for future goers to have a slight idea of what to expect should they be interested in trying a particular dish from one of the many places listed within Yelp. The novel menu pages will be rolling out to business pages today in the US, with Yelp noting that this will be the “first time ever” it’s simultaneously launching a fresh service across its OG site, mobile website and applications.

Skitch for Android brings revamped UI, complete integration with Evernote

Skitch for Android brings revamped UI, complete integration with Evernote

Users haven’t exactly been content with Evernote since it took over the Skitch reigns, but that’s not stopping the Smart Notebook creator from pushing out constant updates to its Android offering. To go along with the handy tweaks from earlier this month, Evernote’s now updated Skitch with a completely redesigned user interface, the addition of a couple of fresh tools (Pixelate and Highlighter), as well as, naturally, a much-improved integration with its own cloud-based service — not to mention the ability to sync with Evernote, though said application would have to also be installed on your device. This new version of Skitch is available to download now via Google Play, and be sure to share your first impressions with us in the comments below.

Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, plans more Star Wars movies

Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $405 billion, plans more Star Wars movies

Disney is already one of the biggest media companies around, and it’s now set to become even bigger. The company announced late today that it’s acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd., currently 100 percent owned by founder George Lucas, for $4.05 billion in a cash and stock deal. That of course includes the rights to both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film franchises, as well as Lucasfilm properties like Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. What’s more, the press release announcing the deal also confirmed that Disney is now targeting 2015 for a release of Star Wars: Episode 7, and that its “long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.” No word yet on a proper release of the original, original trilogy.

TiVo Premiere fall update starts rolling out with more HD menu screens and a few other tweaks

We got an early peek at some of the newly revamped menus from TiVo’s fall update a few days ago, and now the company has announced it is officially rolling out to retail Premiere DVRs, with cable-provided boxes getting the update at some point in the future. Those on the priority list are first up so some TiVo Community posters report they’ve already received it and can confirm the Netflix app is “still terrible.” Besides the upgraded screens for Season Pass Manager, To Do List, History and My Shows (beyond the new look, they each have gained a few new features), Parental controls has replaced KidZone settings, there are some new games in the apps menu and users can name their DVR in the menus. Hit the source link to check out the full list of changes,

Mobilicity upgrade to 21Mbps HSPA+ goes live with throttled service to match

Mobilicity upgrade to 21Mbps HSPA goes live with throttled service to match

Sometimes the leaks are uncannily accurate. As we’d seen just days ago, Mobilicity has flicked on its 21Mbps HSPA+ network, giving customers of the alternative Canadian carrier up to three times the speed of before if they’re using new $80 Huawei E366 modem or a compatible smartphone. Unfortunately, the other part of the rumor is also true: there’s now a curb on that unlimited data. Cross the (admittedly high) 6GB mark and those speeds may be throttled without springing for the 20GB that comes with either a $20 Premium Data Add-On for phones or a data-only $50 Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan. Despite the suddenly lowered ceiling, the higher performance is a welcome kick in the cellular pants for those who want a Galaxy S III without turning to one of the big three providers.

University of Tokyo turns real paper and ink into a display, could share doodles from a distance (video)

University of Tokyo turns real paper and ink into a display, could share doodles from a distance video

Forget e-paper: if the University of Tokyo’s Naemura Lab has its way, we’ll interact with the real thing. The division’s new research has budding artists draw on photochromic paper with Frixion’s heat-sensitive ink, turning the results into something a computer can manipulate. A laser ‘erases’ the ink to fix mistakes or add effects, and an ultraviolet projector overhead can copy any handiwork, fill in the gaps or print a new creation. The prototype is neither high resolution nor quick — you won’t be living out fantasies of a real-world A-Ha music video — but the laser’s accuracy (down to 0.0001 inches) has already led researchers to dream of paper-based, Google Docs-style collaboration where edits in one place affect a tangible document somewhere else. It’s hard to see truly widespread adoption in an era where we’re often trying to save trees instead of print to them, but there’s an undeniable appeal to having a hard copy that isn’t fixed in time.

Microsoft drops Windows Phone Store developer registration to $8 for eight days

Microsoft drops Windows Phone Store developer

How amped is Microsoft to get developers into the Windows Phone 8 Store? The company announced today at Build that it’s lowering developer registration to $8 — that’s down from $99. Got to get in there quick, however — that price is only good for the next eight days. Seems to be some kind of theme here, no?

Update: Looks like the discount situation is a little more involved than just that. According to Microsoft, “You’ll be charged $99 USD or equivalent in your local currency, and we’ll refund the difference in the next 30 to 45 days.” Ninety-two percent discounts don’t just happen overnight, after all.

Gmail composer goes to a simple pop-up, gives multitaskers freedom to fly

Gmail composer goes to a simple popup, gives multitaskers freedom to fly

As much as Gmail shines when it’s on the web, some of its most avid users stay in native apps for the multitasking; having to check a past message in the web client has usually meant putting the current draft on hold, or at least maintaining a near-photographic memory. Google wants to translate some of that desktop experience to the web through a new composition interface it’s testing as of today. New messages start off in a shrinkable pop-up that lets us find old threads without having to put the new conversation on ice, even we’re indecisive enough to leave multiple unfinished e-mail messages open. Other upgrades lurk in the background for the more focused among us, such as a pared-back composition interface, in-line photos and a reply box that dynamically adapts to the space it needs. Only those in the preview will see the Gmail update for now; Google is promising a wider launch in the months ahead that could save us all a few precious minutes each day.
