If you’re not quite comfortable shelling out £299 for BT’s YouView box, then you’re in luck. Starting October 26th, the hardware will be free for new Infinity broadband subscribers who ink contracts that are one year or longer. Instead of relying on cable, the Humax-built device uses both aerial and internet connections to deliver content from more than 100 digital TV and radio channels including Channels 4 and 5, the BBC and ITV. With the IPTV box, users can sift through content that’s aired in the past seven days, watch on-demand programs and record up to 300 hours of standard definition television or 125 hours of high-def video to a built-in 500GB hard drive. Current British Telecom subscribers pining for the subsidized box will be able to get their own for a £49 activation fee and a £6.95 delivery charge. Those eager for the gratis set-top solution will be able to order it online starting October 19th if they register interest with BT’s website beforehand. With Apple’s shiny new iPhone 5 set to start arriving at people’s doorsteps tomorrow, it’s only proper for some folks with early access to give the masses an inside look at what most won’t ever get to see. And while it isn’t the usual suspects doing the damage favor on this occasion, we still appreciate the iPhone-Garage crew for taking the time to dismantle Cupertino’s novel handset. As you can see above, the iPhone 5’s innards aren’t set up much differently than those of its predecessors, the 4 and 4S, which is to be expected given the similar form factors between them. That said, the battery has found a semi-new home at the front end of the device, while the most obvious change is the headphone jack now being located at the bottom, next to that newfangled Lightning port. The Huawei Ascend G600 is expected to arrive in Europe sometime this month, but in the meantime, the middle-weight smartphone was recently spotted at the FCC, where it revealed… well, not much. We’re able to determine from the test reports that this is, indeed, the handset bound for Europe, as its UMTS / HSPA (3G) capabilities will be limited to the 2100MHz and 900MHz bands. Meanwhile, here in the States, the phone will be limited to EDGE connectivity. The Bluetooth and WiFi components also received a stamp of approval from the FCC, although the inclusion of these components should be a surprise to none. Beyond its connectivity, the Ascend G600 will combine Android 4.0.4 with a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, a 4.5-inch qHD display and will sell for €300 ($390) whenever it actually hits store shelves.

While the latest software for OS X Lion isn’t nearly as exciting as a couple of other updates that Apple released today, Lion users will find a few worthwhile improvements within the new OS X 10.7.5 update. Most importantly, the latest software introduces Gatekeeper, a security feature from Mountain Lion that makes it more difficult to inadvertently install malicious software. The update also brings improved WiFi reliability for the iMac (late 2009 and newer) and squashes a bug that’d caused Launchpad icons to become rearranged. You’ll find an even greater number of fixes / improvements after the break, and it’s also worth a mention that even Snow Leopard users have received a bit of love today in the form of a security update.
