If you’d wanted to shop Ubuntu One’s Music Store in the past, you had to use a plugin through an app like Banshee or Rhythmbox. Not very convenient, we’d say. Someone must have been listening up in Canonical’s cloud, as Ubuntu One just brought its 7digital-based store to the web and mobile devices. Apart from widening the software scope, it’s billed as a more direct interface to shop for tunes and send them to Ubuntu One’s cloud for either streaming or syncing. Don’t think that’s enough of a perk? Early purchasers get half a year’s worth of Ubuntu One Music Streaming for free — as strong an incentive as any to dip a toe into the (music) stream before jumping in.

The agreement adds properties like Wallace & Gromit, Morph, Creature Comforts, Shaun the Sheep and Rex the Runt to LoveFilm’s offerings, letting users stream content on their computers, PS3s, Xbox 360s, iPads and more. McAfee’s been offering mobile protection services on Android for a while now, but Verizon’s taking it a step further and bringing an application tailored specifically for its own customers with help from the Intel-owned outfit. The Mobile Security app — which is also powered by Asurion — aims to assist the Big Red crowd by protecting their devices from many “digital and physical threats,” giving Android (2.1 or later) users the ability to lock, set up alarms, wipe data and locate handsets remotely. As it stands, Verizon’s splitting the Mobile Security utility into three different setups, including a free-of-charge Basic, the Premium for $2 per month and, for those who want to be extra careful, a Premium with Total Equipment Coverage that adds a $1 monthly charge to the current TEC fees. We’ll let your levels of paranoia decide whether or not you actually need any of these — but alas, the link is down below for folks interested in checking out the shielding app.

You don’t have to wait for an FAA rethink to use your iPad on an airliner below 10,000 feet — if you’re part of an American Airlines crew, that is. As of this month, the air carrier is the first cleared by the FAA to use iPads in the cockpit at every point during a flight. The program starts just with Boeing 777 pilots at first, but it should eventually grow to save $1.2 million in weight-related fuel costs per year across the airline, not to mention a few trees and the strain of 35-pound flight bags. American is confident enough in the tablet switchover that it plans to stop handing out any paper updates to its charts and manuals as of January, just days after its entire fleet gets the regulatory nod for iPads at the end of this year. We just wouldn’t anticipate Android or Windows tablet rollouts anytime soon. American isn’t opposed to the concept, but it’s only promising that slates beyond the iPad will be “evaluated for use” if and when the FAA applies its rubber stamp.
