Chrome 29 for iOS brings voice search with pronouns

Chrome for iOS with voice search

Google loves to throw small-yet-sensible interface updates into many Chrome releases, and the new Chrome 29 for iOS represents a textbook example. The browser’s voice search now supports contextual pronouns like “her” or “them;” ask a question and you can run a follow-up search without mentioning the subject by name. The update also lets you quickly jump back to search results if you visit the wrong result, and it’s now easier to view bandwidth savings if you have access to the experimental data compression feature. Should you like the smattering of new features, you can grab Chrome 29 now through the App Store.

Singulus tests 100GB, 4K-ready Blu-ray discs

Singulus tests 100GB, 4Kready Bluray discs

The Blu-ray Disc Association has teased that a 4K-friendly disc format is coming, but Singulus isn’t willing to wait to make some announcements of its own. The German company just finished production tests of a Blu-ray disc that squeezes 100GB into three layers, making it “ideal” for 4K movies. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, the company hasn’t said much more about the technology — we don’t know if the discs have the BDA’s support, whether they’re compatible with existing players, or when they enter mass production. We’ve reached out for more details; in the meantime, we’d advise saving up for the exotic TV you’ll need to watch 4K movies in any format.

LG G2 ships to six Canadian carriers on September 27th

LG G2 ships to six Canadian carriers on September 27th

Canadians won’t have to wait long for their version of the LG G2. The 5.2-inch smartphone is now due to reach Bell, Rogers, Sasktel, Telus, Videotron and Wind Mobile on September 27th, two days after it launches on T-Mobile in the States. The carriers haven’t yet divulged pricing, although we’re not expecting Bell, Rogers or Telus to charge much more than $200 on contract, like some of their American counterparts.

TiVo Network PVR puts Roamio recording technology in the cloud

TiVo Network PVR puts Roamio interface in the cloud for TV providers

However good TiVo’s new Roamio DVRs may be, not everyone can justify purchasing them — especially not TV providers that would have to buy in bulk. TiVo could make that experience more accessible with its just-unveiled Network PVR. The service (not yet pictured) puts the Roamio interface in the cloud, letting operators offer similar recording and streaming features though cheaper set-top boxes and mobile devices. Network PVR should also let providers offer perks that aren’t possible with locally-stored shows, such as sharing a recording with friends who missed the big season finale. There’s no estimated launch time frame for Network PVR, although that’s more likely to be dictated by the providers; don’t be surprised if it takes a while for the technology to reach viewers.

AT&T agrees to LTE interoperability with smaller US carriers

AT&T Logo on an angle

Numerous regional US carriers have called for AT&T to support their 700MHz bands, which would give them the LTE devices and roaming coverage they need to compete with national rivals. These networks may soon get their wish: as part of an FCC-led deal, AT&T has agreed to support LTE on the 700MHz A Block frequencies held by smaller providers. While AT&T is short on details, it’s already modifying its network to support the additional bands. Compatible devices will arrive in a “reasonable time frame,” the telecom giant says. The commitment doesn’t address LTE interoperability problems with Verizon and other major US networks, but it should help at least a few tiny carriers stand a fighting chance in the 4G era.

Vimeo On Demand now allows preorders, separate purchase and rental prices

Video producers that sell through Vimeo On Demand now have much more flexibility in marketing their wares. Starting today, Vimeo Pro members can offer both purchases and rentals at separate prices. They can also supply pre-orders and promo codes, while stat hounds will see more advanced viewership data, such as trailer play counts. It’s up to content creators to use the new features, but we’ve already spotted at least a few titles that take advantage of the upgrades; head over to Vimeo if you’d like to give them a try.

Moto X now available to T-Mobile customers, but only from Motorola

Moto X now available to TMobile customers, but only through Motorola's site

Want the Moto X experience combined with T-Mobile’s inexpensive plans? Today’s your lucky day — sort of. Motorola is now selling the promised T-Mobile version of its flagship, but only through its website at an unsubsidized $600 price. And like the Model T, you’re limited to black; the company lists the white version as “coming soon.” If you’re not deterred by the limited purchasing options, however, you can pick up a magenta-friendly Moto X at the source link.

Sprint to start LG G2 pre-orders on October 11th

Sprint to start LG G2 preorders on October 11th

We’ve seen AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon commit to releasing the LG G2 this fall… but where’s Sprint’s version? Don’t worry, fans, the carrier hasn’t forgotten you. Sprint now says it will take pre-orders for the $200 Android flagship starting on October 11th, with a release “in time for the holidays.” In return for the wait, the provider is giving out free QuickWindow covers to everyone who pre-orders a G2 through its website. We doubt that the gift will quell the jealousy of Sprint customers whose friends get a G2 weeks in advance, but the more patient among those subscribers can register their interest at the source link.
