Plex desktop app becomes Plex Home Theater, adds AirPlay and HD audio

Plex desktop app becomes Plex Home Theater, adds AirPlay and HD audio

Plex wants us to settle in for some holiday viewing in front of our home theater PCs, and to that effect it’s delivering a major beta update to its desktop app — including a new name. The more clearly defined Plex Home Theater syncs up with the XBMC 12 beta and simplifies Plex’s own update process. For those in the living room, shifting to the newer base brings AirPlay streaming from nearby Apple-friendly gear as well as 10-bit H.264 video and HD audio. Behind-the-scenes updates bring more efficient video rendering and fix some older bugs, such as audio sync with SD footage. The catch to enjoying all this? As the upgrade is pre-release code, Plex is limiting early access to PlexPass subscribers. Media mavens still willing to pay the premium can check out the source link for an upgrade to their end-of-year movie marathons.

Must See HDTV (December 25th – 30th)

Must See HDTV December 25th 30th

Even though most of us are enjoying a holiday break and our favorite TV shows are too, there’s still a few things worth checking out this week. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

The Room
Touted as “one of the worst films ever made,” Tommy Wiseau’s The Room is one of the few movies being released on Blu-ray this week. Whether you consider it as an intentional comedy or one of the most poorly crafted efforts at a drama of all time, it is not a movie you should watch…unless you love bad movies. Check out the trailer after the break for a taste, the full HD experience (according to an interview, the filmmaker shot it entirely both in film and digitally in HD because he couldn’t make a decision) will cost more than thirty bucks.
($31.99 on Amazon)

Bowl Games
You name it, there’s a bowl sponsored by it. If your college football team hasn’t played in a bowl yet, there’s a good chance they will this week, and it will be on ESPN, check the listings below for the list of games and times. Of course, until the BCS games start these matchups don’t have a lot of pull, but if you just want to see your favorite team one more time, these will have to do.

Newsweek ends its print run with a hashtagged cover

Image

December 31st will mark the end of one of the biggest names in the world of printed news. As noted back in October, however, Newsweek isn’t saying die, it’s just jumping head first into the warm embrace of digital media. And as the publication revealed via its Twitter account, it will be doing so with a wink and a nod, thanks to a giant #lastprintissue hashtag smack dab in the middle of a classy black and white cover. #godspeed, Newsweek, #godspeed.

Gameloft cuts many game prices to 99 cents, wants screen time on your gift phone

Gameloft cuts many game prices to 99 cents, wants screen time on your gift phone

More than a few of us are getting phones and tablets as gifts this year, and Gameloft wants to be there the moment we’re hunting for new apps to feed our devices. Accordingly, the developer has slashed the price on many of its recent games to 99 cents during the holidays, even including better-known titles like Asphalt 7 and Dark Knight Rises. Not surprisingly, the discounting doesn’t include Modern Combat 4 and a few other releases — there have to be profit-makers left somewhere, after all — but it’s a huge break for those who want a few starter titles and aren’t concerned about always having the latest and greatest. Both Android and iOS gamers can splurge at the source links.

Nintendo PSA: update the firmware for that gift Wii U

Nintendo Wii U review wrap-up

So you’re the very definition of generosity and plan to put a Wii U under the tree for that special someone. Nintendo just provided a helpful tip to keep the kindness going beyond Christmas morning, if it’s not too late: update that Wii U’s firmware before you wrap the box. Unless the recipients are wired up with Google Fiber, they’ll likely face a long wait as that 5GB patch arrives. The process will spoil the unboxing experience, to be sure — but so does realizing that it’s another two hours before anyone can use the eShop and Netflix. Trust us, they’ll thank you for it later.

ZTE Grand X appears in T-Mobile USA garb at the FCC

ZTE Grand X appears in TMobile USA garb at the FCC

If you were wondering whether or not the ZTE Grand X would cross the oceans to launch in the US, there’s a good chance the mystery is over. An unusually detailed FCC filing has uncovered a V970T variant that’s destined for T-Mobile USA, complete with the carrier branding, Wi-Fi calling and AWS-based 3G data to match. Other details of the Android 4.0 phone are lacking despite the presence of a manual, although the V970 edition we’ve seen elsewhere runs on a dual-core, 1GHz MediaTek MT6577 chip alongside the more familiar 4.3-inch screen and 5-megapixel rear camera. T-Mobile’s release plan is about all that’s left to ponder; knowing the entry-level components, though, any possible launch should come with a low price tag.

LG’s 2013 Google TV sets to come in more sizes, fresher designs

LG's 2013 Google TV sets to come in more sizes, sleeker looks

LG only experimented with a Google TV lineup in 2012; for 2013, it’s committing to the concept in earnest. The 47- and 55-inch sizes we know today should be joined by 42-, 50- and 60-inch models that cater both to frugal viewers and those who like to live large. We should also see the spruced-up designs that come with yearly updates, including newer zero-bezel frames and distinctive stands. We’re less surprised by input and software updates — all of the new screens will ship with voice-enabled Google TV and OnLive support from the get-go, and the company’s multi-talented Magic Remote is making its return. LG is remaining coy on further details beyond promising a release sometime in the first half of 2013, although there’s a good chance we’ll know more in Las Vegas.

YouTube Player API for Android opens for all, brings seamless app integration (video)

YouTube Player API for Android opens for all, brings seamless app integration video

Adding a little dash of YouTube magic to your Android apps should be simple affair right? Well, historically, not entirely. That’s all set to change though, now that the long-promised Android YouTube Player API has finally been set loose in the wild. This means developers can access some new tools that should bring the ubiquitous video service snuggly inside any app that wants to use it. This includes high-quality playback for devices running Android 2.2 and above, easier integration there-of due to a change in how to call the videos, full screen and orientation mode support, closed captions display, support for YouTube ads and the ability to program most elements of the playback experience natively within your app. The tools have already been put to use by some partners who got early access, including one of our favourite social feed-readers Flipboard. Full details and tools at the source, or slide past the break for Google developers video showing it in action.

Windows Phone 7.8 upgrades appear on Nokia’s servers for all eligible Lumias

Windows Phone 78 upgrades appear on NaviFirm for all Nokia Lumia devices

Lingering concerns that Nokia might not upgrade all its Windows Phone 7.5 roster to 7.8 might have just been put to rest. Just a day after updates for the Lumia 510 and 800 were caught on Nokia’s servers through NaviFirm, updates have also been spotted for those devices that didn’t make the initial cut: the Lumia 610, 710 and 900 have all appeared, each with numerous region-specific updates in tow. Their existence still doesn’t constitute a formal update, so be aware that you’re gambling with your phone’s health if you install them without any word from Microsoft or Nokia. Suffice it to say that full availability is clearly getting close — and that it’s less probable any Lumia will be left behind.

Samsung ATIV S goes on sale at the big three Canadian carriers

Samsung ATIV S goes on sale at the top three Canadian carriers

Samsung’s ATIV S has only just started trickling out into the marketplace, but Canadians will be happy to know they’re some of the first to get their feet wet: Bell, Rogers and Telus have all made the Windows Phone 8 headliner available from today. We’re seeing a wild variety in pricing that doesn’t often happen with smartphones, however. Bell is offering the phone for $100 on a lengthy 3-year contract, but the amount drops to a momentary $80 at Rogers and just $30 at Telus’ discounted price. Landing the ATIV S off-contract either costs $600 (at Bell and Rogers) or $650 on Telus. Locals shouldn’t count on a walk-in purchase when there’s talk at MobileSyrup of tight supply; they’ll likely still be glad when they at least have the chance a week or more before their British counterparts.
