Microsoft plans OTA update to keep Windows Phone 8 devices from randomly rebooting

Microsoft is prepping a remedy for Windows Phone 8 which will squash a bug that’s caused some devices loaded with the OS to reboot without notice. According to a statement issued by Ballmer and Co., Redmond and its partners have identified the cause of the restart woes and are working on pushing out an over-the-air update in December. However, Microsoft is remaining coy regarding what’s behind the mishap. Sure, a randomly restarting handset is cause for agitation, but remembering that the latest release of Windows Phone has accounted for the month of December might be a small consolation.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Note II starts shipping

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Note II starts shipping

If you’ve pre-ordered a Verizon flavor of Samsung’s Galaxy Note II, it’s high time you check your email for a shipping confirmation, as we just received a notice of our own. With two-day shipping on the package carrying our smartphone behemoth, it’s estimated to arrive on November 29th. Presumably, it’ll be available at Big Red’s brick-and-mortar establishments on that same day, but we’ve reached out to Verizon and Samsung for confirmation. In the meantime, you can peep inside your inboxes and let us know in the comments if your hulking handset is on its way as well.

Rovi is shutting down its OTA TV guide service without notice

Without notice, Rovi shuts down TV guide service

The company with so much love it changed its name to fool its fans is at it again, this time killing the signal that provides guide data directly to many televisions and set-top boxes. You see, before changing its name from Macrovision, Rovi acquired Gemstar-TV guide in 2008 — which was probably most well known for the integrated program guide common in higher end TVs throughout the last decade. While most people just use the guide offered on their provider’s set-top, this guide is for those who actually use the clear-QAM or over-the-air tuner in their TV. The way it worked is that manufacturers baked the software into the TV, which would then tune into a local affiliate’s broadcast of a week’s worth of guide data. The setup successfully made it through the digital transition — minus the truckloads of analog-only TVs ceasing to work along the way — as new TVs featured a digital version of the service, as well as some digital converters, like the DTVpal DVR.

Razer updates Orochi mouse with new laser, longer battery life

Razer updates Orochi mouse with new laser, longer battery life

It’s nearly vacation time, you’ve got your second-gen Razer Blade nestled in wrapping paper below the Festivus pole, and all you need is a fancy new mouse to go along with that fancy new gaming laptop. Razer’s apparently got you covered in that department as well, refreshing its Orochi wireless gaming mouse just in time for the upcoming holiday. Sporting a new laser with a 6400 dpi 4G sensor, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity (as well as wired support) and 30 hours of advertised battery life on two AAs (double the previous model), the Orochi promises to “take out the competition with deadly accuracy.” Here’s hoping Razer’s not talking about beating your opponents to death with the mouse, and just means that figuratively. The company’s already got the new Orochi up for sale on its website for $69.99 / €69.99, which we’d suggest heading to sooner than later should you want to beat the holiday madness.

Google adds detailed mapping to 45 Russian cities

Image

Were Yakov Smirnoff here, he’d probably try and crowbar in an “In Soviet Russia, cities Google you!” gag, but we’re above such mischief. As such, we’ll just let you know that Mountain View’s Russian branch has added detailed mapping information for 45 new cities, including Vladivostok, Donetsk and Sochi, the home of the 2014 Winter Games. We’d suggest downloading the mapping data for the whole bunch while over your 3G connection and see if you don’t win a prize, after all, it’s happened before.

Verizon and NBCUniversal bring TV Everywhere to even more places

Verizon and NBCUniversal has struck a “TV Everywhere” rights agreement so that FiOS customers will be able to watch the media company’s entire programming portfolio live and on-demand via multiple platforms. In fact, some of the programming is accessible via the Verizon FiOS Mobile iPad app already, like USA, CNBC, MSNBC and Bravo. The agreement extends to retransmission rights from local NBC and Telemundo stations, future Olympic games and various Comcast SportsNet markets like Philadelphia, Mid Atlantic and New England. Hoping that exclusive movie rental window like the one in the UK will cross the pond? Don’t hold your breath, but Verizon FiOS customers shouldn’t have long to wait for the NBCUniversal package, which starts early next year.

Netflix Android app updated with tweaks to the player UI, 4.2 compatibility

Netflix Android app updated with tweaks to the player UI, 42 compatibility

Netflix just refreshed the front end of its Android app a few weeks ago, and is now tweaking the look and functions of the player itself again after previously making changes back in April. As seen above, version 2.1 brings a look that’s closer to the one we’ve seen on iOS since the spring, with large red buttons, a bigger volume slider, 10 second skip back and stills that change in the background as the user moves the scrub bar. The changelog also notes added support for Android 4.2 plus other unspecified playback and stability bug fixes, grab the newest edition at the source link to try it out for yourself.

Lenovo IdeaPhone P770 stuffs 29-hour battery and Jelly Bean into a lower-cost smartphone

Lenovo IdeaPhone P770 stuffs 29hour battery and Jelly Bean into a lowercost smartphone

Motorola may face a new contender to the Droid RAZR MAXX HD’s battery capacity crown. Lenovo’s quietly introduced IdeaPhone P770 at least theoretically challenges its American counterpart by cramming a 3,500mAh lithium polymer battery into a thicker 11.9mm (0.47-inch) body. That’s 200mAh more than Motorola’s energy champion, and enough for the company to flaunt a 29-hour talk time. That’s not quite as long as Motorola’s claimed 32 hours, but Lenovo has done something its American rival seemingly can’t — launch a phone with Jelly Bean. Motorola might rest easier in knowing that the the P770 is an unrepentantly budget-focused behemoth, carrying a 4.5-inch qHD display, a (possibly MediaTek-made) 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of built-in storage, an 8GB microSD card and both 5-megapixel rear as well as VGA front cameras. For the ¥1,699 ($273) Lenovo is asking for an off-contract model in its native China, the P770 could still be the first pick of many local phone owners on long-haul trips. It’s just a shame that the lack of 4G (and Lenovo’s domestic-first mobile strategy) likely means we won’t see a launch in the US.

[Thanks, FT]

Huzzah! Some Nexus 4 orders shipping this week, says Google

DNP Huzzah! Some Nexus 4 orders shipping this week, says Google

Hordes of Nexus 4 hopefuls cringed after receiving an email stating that their order had been delayed due to the overwhelming demand for Google’s latest purebred smartphone. While some folks opted to cancel their purchase in hopes of buying the handset elsewhere, those who chose to weather the storm are in for some good news. Google is now sending out emails advising customers that their order will go out sometime this week and that it will provide tracking details once a device officially ships out. If you’re among those who hunkered down and exercised patience, you’ll want to keep a close eye on your inbox, as there may be a precious gem in your junk mail folder resting somewhere between messages from a Nigerian Prince who desperately needs your help.
