Reevu Motorcycle Helmet Gives You Eyes in the Back of Your Head

The most dangerous thing about a motorcycle isn’t the motorcycle itself, it’s the distracted drivers around you. We all see people driving down the street in a car weaving all over the place, texting rather than paying attention to what they’re doing. If one of those drivers hits you in your car, you may be angry but odds are you going to be okay. However, if one of those distracted drivers hits you on a motorcycle, there’s a very high likelihood that you won’t be walking away from the accident.

A company called Reevu has created an incredibly cool motorcycle helmet that gives riders eyes in the back of their head. The helmet uses an optical device that’s able to give the rider a view of what’s going on behind them, without distracting them from the road in front of them.

The helmet doesn’t use a camera system or an LCD viewfinder, it uses an optical device that is able to bend light over the top of the wearer’s head allowing them to view what’s behind them on a small mirror inside the helmet.

Those optical elements are coated onto a bulletproof material inside the helmet that also acts as a crumple zone to add additional protection in an accident.

The helmet is made from durable, lightweight polycarbonate materials, and is available in black, matte black, titanium and silver finishes. You can buy the Reevu MSX1 Rear View helmet at Revzilla for $399.99(USD).

AIST – Light-controlling sheet switches between mirror and transparent states

There is another really amazing new technology captured on video by Don Kennedy and Ryo Osuga of DigInfo.TV.
I think there are a lot of implications for building eco-friendly buildings and cars and having more flexibility with components in the future.
From DigInfo.TV:
AIST has developed a light-controlling sheet that can switch between mirror and transparent states. Using this sheet on window glass saves energy by effectively shutting out sunlight, greatly reducing the load on …

Film Material For Windows Switches From Translucent to Mirror Mode

One of the biggest energy requirement for a city is to heat or cool down buildings and houses. It is not easy to design a place that will be warm in the winter, and stay cool in the summer, and one way to do this in an energy-efficient way is by using sunlight as it’s free and quite abundant. The idea of having highly reflective Windows is not new: many buildings are already using this. However, their cost made them only accessible to the richest builders. (more…)

The Best Fogless Lighted Mirror

Hammacher prides itself in delivering what it deems to be “The Best” in a series of different home-based devices. Well, any man worth his salt would know that being clean shaven is a must-do if you were to have a big presentation at the boardroom tomorrow, or if you have this hot date tonight, unless you are one of those who can carry a beard, mustache or 5 o’clock shadow well like those Hollywood stars. To make sure there is an adequate amount of lighting, this is where the $49.95 The Best Fogless Lighted Mirror comes in handy.

The The Best Fogless Lighted Mirror comes across as a lighted shower mirror which will remain fog-free for the longest period, and it is a snap to mount securely. Lesser models were shown to steam up completely after just five minutes in a hot shower, this bad boy remained fog-free after over 20 minutes. This kind of wizardry is made possible courtesy of a special hot water reservoir which ensures the mirror remains at the same temperature as the surrounding area. You do not use unreliable suction cups which lose their grip quickly, but will instead rely on non-marring removable silicone adhesive. The shatterproof mirror also adds another element of safety and peace of mind for parents with young children around the house.

Looking Good Mirror: Who’s That Handsome Devil?

Some people like to obsessively check themselves in the mirror to make sure they look their best. If this describes you, then have I got something for you.

looking good mirror 1

Thabto’s Looking Good mirror looks like a giant pair of eyeglasses, so you can check out your own beautiful mug while at the same time you adjust your own shades. You are so good looking. The dual mirror design actually has another advantage – you and your significant other can primp and preen yourselves side-by-side.

looking good mirror 2The Looking Good mirror sells for £200 (~$350 USD). While that might seem like a lot to spend on a mirror, it’s actually way less than my last pair of eyeglasses cost. Of course, these might look a little ridiculous if I tried to wear them.

Audi R8 e-tron won’t see public sale, will be used for internal evaluation only

Audi R8 e-tron won't see public sale, will be used for internal evaluation only

It’s time to put your dreams of owning Audi’s R8 e-tron to bed — the German automaker won’t be shipping the electric car to dealerships, according to a Wired source. The record setting vehicle’s sales plans were apparently axed due to driving range concerns and a new focus on plug-in hybrid vehicles. We followed up with a contact of our own, who confirmed that the R8 would be produced only in small numbers, and only for internal use, at that. The R8 may be dead, but its core achievements should appear in future vehicles, we’re told — including its lightweight construction, AMOLED rear-view mirror and battery management system.

Nico the Robot Recognizes Self in the Mirror

Justin Hart and Brian Scassellati of Yale University have nothing better to do, so they thought they would tinker with robots and doom us all. Recently, they taught a humanoid robot named Nico to recognize its own reflection in the mirror. That doesn’t sound so bad right? Well, it’s fine until they decide one day that everything that doesn’t look like them has to go. We aren’t there yet thankfully. Right now this is just a cute story about a robot and a mirror. For now.
nico robot
Nico is part of an experiment to see whether a robot can tackle a test of self-awareness called the mirror test. To pass the test an animal or a robot has to recognise that a mark on the body it sees in the mirror is on its own body. Only dolphins, orcas, elephants, magpies, humans and a few other apes have passed the test so far.

The robot has had to learn more about itself. He isn’t done yet. So the team plans to teach Nico how to recognise where its torso is, where it’s head is and so on. The shape, the color and texture as well.

“What excites me is that the robot has learned a model of itself, and is using it to interpret information from the mirror,” says Hart. I guess one man’s excitement is another’s sheer terror. Soon there will be vain robots everywhere.

Fisker confirms Q&A outlining Karma woes and fixes, may establish council to talk issues in person

Fisker Karma mountain drive

Fisker has had more than its fair share of teething troubles with the Karma, but it has to be given credit for going out of its way to listen to early adopters. The hybrid car builder has confirmed to Autoblog that a question and answer session making the rounds is the official result of town hall discussions that have both acknowledged problems and promised fixes where they’re possible. The answers we’ve been given are a mix of sober realities and practical remedies. Drivers hoping for outright hardware upgrades to improve performance with existing Karmas will have to keep wishing; thankfully, a host of firmware fixes are on the way to improve at least the sedan’s Command Center system and mirrors. PR lead Roger Ormisher even hints that there could be an in-person council that would tackle concerns more directly than the remote pep talks. We’re mostly hoping for the day when Fisker stamps out the bugs and doesn’t need the Q&A to put Karma owners’ minds at ease.

Audi R8 e-tron to feature digital AMOLED rear-view mirror

Audi R8 e-tron to feature digital AMOLED rear-view mirror

Audi’s R18 racing car’s been sporting this digital rear-view mirror for some time, and was most recently spotted with it at the renowned LeMans racing competition — but now the German outfit’s bringing the tech to a more consumer-friendly vehicle, the R8 e-tron. The luxurious automobile company announced that gorgeous 7.7-inch reflector is making its way from its speedy R18 to the stunning R8 e-tron, marking the first time any ride outside of the former will come loaded with such feature. In case you weren’t aware, the AMOLED rear-view mirror helps automatically reduce headlights glare “during the hours of darkness,” while also allowing drivers to dim or turn it off altogether if, you know, they’re just not feeling the vibe.
