I have a confession to make. I love /r/cringe, the sub-Reddit dedicated to those moments usually caught on video that make us feel better about our lots in life when we can watch a 30-second chunk of happenstance and walk away thinking, “I am at least one level of dork above that person.”
Back in the day you were either a nerd… or not. There were no levels of dorkiness like we have today. You were into computers and Dungeons & Dragons or you weren’t: that was pretty much it. You were grouped into a subculture that enjoyed all things electronic, idolized Brian Tochi, knew who Steve Wozniak was and could explain why Weird Science was not a nerd revenge film, but actually a celebration of giving up the machine for love and conformity shrouded in a Hughesian attempt to finally give the dweebs a chance to get some. Still a cool movie, though, and a righteous theme song.
The mind behind BioShock‘s Big Daddies and BioShock Infinite‘s Songbird is apparently also getting behind the script for a Logan’s Run film remake. Irrational Games creative director and head Ken Levine is working on a Logan’s Run remake script, Irrational confirmed to Engadget today, which he was tapped to pen by Warner Bros. “I can confirm that the information is indeed correct, but unfortunately there is no other information we can share or comment to be given at this point,” the rep told us.
According to a Deadline report that surfaced earlier this week, Levine is continuing his work at Irrational in the meantime — the studio’s working on a few content packs for its latest BioShock release, and assuredly other things — while Jon Berg oversees the Logan’s Run project. Also in the report: this remake has been in the works for some time, though Levine’s addition is new to the project.
In case it wasn’t already clear, there’s a pretty sweet Logan’s Run movie (based on the original 1967 book) starring Michael York as “Logan 5.” The very, very mid-’70s poster for that film is cropped just above.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything out of the gTar camp — nearly half a year in fact, when the company announced pre-orders the week of CES. This morning the Kickstarted instrument manufacturer broke the silence by announcing that it’ll be opening up its SDK for both iOS and Javascript, letting developers create apps for browsers and Apple’s mobile operating system. The learning-friendly instrument already has a bit of a head start, as it’s presently compatible with more than 150 apps, according to the company. Compatibility also extends to Ableton Live, via an “unofficial custom script” that makes it possible to use the gTar’s fretboard as a control panel for the popular DJ software.

Keeping your Gmail account organized isn’t that hard when you can tag and star emails. Evernote Web Clipper’s new function, however, promises easier access to missives you deem particularly important. Once the Chrome extension is installed, it saves any message you want along with its attachments in just one click. One note, though: you’ll need a premium account to search through any attached documents. Note that the Gmail clip will look like a garbled mess (especially if it’s a lengthy thread) on Web Clipper’s preview screen, but on the Evernote app or web portal it will appear nicely formatted. No need to envy your iPhone- and iPad-toting friends anymore just because they can catch the latest episodes of Bates Motel or Dance Moms on the go. Streaming apps from A&E, History Channel and Lifetime have just arrived on Android, and you can access content even if you’re not a cable subscriber. Naturally, the entire roster of shows and episodes isn’t available — in some cases, you can only watch clips instead of full episodes — but Comcast or DirecTV subscribers who log in will have more to choose from. “Internet radio” is usually a misnomer, as well as an indicator of its ambition. The term “radio” is misapplied to internet services like AOL Radio, Rhapsody Radio, the upcoming iTunes Radio and their ilk. All these mediums are unrelated to radio technology. But for most people, “radio” simply means something you turn on and listen to. As a marketing term, “radio” seeks to accustom users to new technology by connecting it with familiar technology. Pandora describes itself as “free, personalized radio.”
The business intent in all cases is more ambitious — to wean people from the terrestrial radio habit and migrate them to online services. Will it work?
Sony is releasing a hand-cranked battery charger/emergency radio (ICF-B88/ICF-B08) on July 20. It will be extremely helpful as an emergency energy supply or as part of outdoor gear.
