Insert Coin Semifinalist Make a Play

The students at ITP are constantly churning out creative projects that are unafraid to walk the fine line between art and tech. So its no wonder that Gal Sasson’s Make a Play wound up as one of the semi-finalists in our Insert Coin: New Challengers competition. It doesn’t hurt that the concept also combines two of our greatest loves here at Engadget: toys and Arduino. The name, it turns out, is actually quite descriptive. The microcontroller-driven stage allows anyone to quickly create a piece of miniature theater using handcrafted puppets and an impressive selection of buttons, knobs and switches — all lovingly handcrafted out of wood on this prototype. The control panel can move the actors using two motorized carts, cue lighting, playback voice recordings and even activate special electronics embedded in the puppets, such as LED eyes in the demo video after the break. Any action can be recorded and fed to a companion computer program, where tweaks can can be made to the automation. Honestly, sounds like the sort of thing we wish we had a as kids.

The petition to reinstate the DMCA protection of smartphone unlockers has reached 100,000 signatories on We The People. As it’s now hit the golden limit, the White House will have to issue an official response explaining its stance on the matter. The petition also asked that if the Librarian of Congress wouldn’t bring back the exemption, that a bill should be passed that enshrines the right into law. As soon we see the message from the West Wing, we’ll let you know what they say.

The company’s just introduced its Bar and Mini external batteries, touting rather portable and peculiar designs as some of the main features present. More importantly, both of the USB-equipped power packs are loaded with 5,600 and 2,600mAh, respectively — and, according to Jackery, this is enhanced by the peripherals’ ability to hold a charge for up to six months, thanks to the company’s own “unique power lock technology.” Jackery’s 5.4-ounce Bar is available starting today for $40, while the more petite Mini (which weighs in at less than three ounces) can be yours for 10 bucks less than its heavier sibling.

White House threatens trade sanctions for countries found cybersnooping

International diplomacy may feel like schoolyard antics, but the participants do have something a little heavier to throw at each other. After President Obama signed an executive order to improve national cyber security, the White House is now reportedly opening the box marked Trade and Diplomatic Sanctions, which it’ll lob at any country that’s found to be appropriating US trade secrets. The executive has published a report, outlining a dozen thefts from companies such as GM, Ford and DuPont, fingering China as being behind a majority of them. If the hacking persists, then James Lewis, of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says the White House should deny visas or access to US banks to Chinese people and corporations — making us wistful for the courtroom dramas of yore.

NXP's silicon fingerprinting promises to annoy the heck out of ID hackers

It’s 2013 and white hat hackers like Adam Laurie are still breaking into ID chips that are supposed to be secure. How come? Partly it’s the way of the world, because no man-made NFC or RFID security barrier can ever be truly impervious. But in practical terms, a chip’s vulnerability often stems from the fact that it can be taken apart and probed at a hacker’s leisure. The secure element doesn’t necessarily need to have power running through it or to be in the midst of near-field communication in order to yield up its cryptographic key to a clever intruder who has sufficient time and sufficient desire to breach the security of a smartphone, bank card or national border.

Which brings us to the latest device in NXP‘s SmartMX2 range — a piece of technology that is claimed to work very differently and that is expected to hit the market next year. Instead of a traditional key stored in the secure element’s memory, every single copy of this chip carries a unique fingerprint within the physical structure of its transistors. This fingerprint (aka Physically Unclonable Function, or PUF) is a byproduct of tiny errors in the fabrication process — something chip makers usually try to minimize. But NXP has found a way to amplify these flaws in a controlled way and use them for identification, and it’d take a mightily well-equipped criminal (or fare dodger, or Scrabble cheater) to reverse engineer that.

While the Shard might be the new darling of London’s skyline, the BT Tower’s still got a few tricks up its sleeve — such as this record-breaking 320 gigapixel panorama of the English capital. In total 48,640 images, shot with four Canon EOS 7D cameras were stitched together to create this 360 vista. Want a little more perspective? The press info claims that if this were a physical image, it would be almost as large as Buckingham Palace — or in more concrete terms — 60,000 times larger than an average iPhone photo. Of course, what good would a gigapixel image be without a where’s waldo-style hunt? So, UK residents who have a keen eye can try spotting BT’s Buzby mascot for the chance of winning some prizes. Us? We’re just trying to hunt down a cab. Set your sights on the source for big picture.

BT TOWER BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR PANORAMIC PHOTO

An amazing image of London taken from the top of the BT Tower has set a new record for the world’s largest panoramic photo. The image shows a full 360 degree view of London in incredible detail.
The 320 gigapixel image, taken by expert photography firm 360Cities, comprises 48,640 individual frames, using four, state of the art Canon EOS 7D cameras with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses and Extender EF 2x III teleconverters, provided by Canon. The cameras were driven by high end Rodeon VR Head ST robotic panorama heads, from the Clauss company in Germany. The individual images have been stitched into a single, gigantic panorama over a period of weeks by a powerful Celsius R920 workstation, provided by Fujitsu Technology Solutions Europe.

It is the first time that an image of this magnitude has ever been attempted, and it took several months to create due to the scale of the endeavour. If printed at normal photographic resolution, the BT Tower panorama would be 98 meters across and 24 meters tall, almost as big as Buckingham Palace. In comparison, the last record attempt for a London panorama was 80 gigapixels, taken from Centrepoint in 2010.
The images were taken after the end of London 2012, the first digital Games. Londoners, tourists and those who work in the capital are now being asked to share their favourite views of the capital, as a permanent record of London’s year in the global spotlight.

As the official communications services partner for London 2012, BT played a vital role in ensuring the Games were the most connected ever, with millions of people enjoying sharing their experiences of the sporting and cultural action via social media. BT Tower played its part in the celebration, sharing news of every single medal won, live stats and scores on its giant 360 degree LED screen.

Samsung receives patent for music player that lets you add your own riffs

Though patents often never amount to anything, we sincerely hope this wacky one from Samsung does. It’s an approved idea for a portable music player that also contains keys and motion detectors to let it function as a “musical instrument,” too. While listening to that epic jam, you could play along by pressing keys on the side of the device as if you were fingering a guitar’s fretboard. You’d be able to change position on the “guitar neck” by moving the player back and forth, and a motion detector on the side would sense the fingers on your other hand as you strum chords or pluck out a solo. Your GarageBand-style noodling, along with the original music would all blare through a speaker and amp combo on the device, to the amusement / horror of your friends. That’s assuming Samsung ever builds one, of course — but if not, our John Q. Engadget will be the first name on a petition to get it to market.

Twitter’s acquisition of TweetDeck definitely ruffled some feathers, but unlike other purchases made by the social network, there appears to be a future for this once-celebrated application. Available today by way of a browser restart, the blue bird has rolled out a new set of filters for TweetDeck’s web and Chrome apps that allow users to fine-tune what content their columns track. The new Showing option manages what your timeline displays, such as tweets with images, videos, links or any other type of media. The Matching and Excluding filters give the option to search for keywords in your feed that you wish to blacklist or single out. Rounding out this list of new features is the ability to enable or exclude retweets from your setup. Sure, seeing your words quoted a few times can be an ego boost, but a continuous echo can get annoying after a while.

Dell reports Q4 2013 earnings

Dell hasn’t had good news to share during its quarterly earnings reports in quite sometime. And on the eve of it going private, things don’t appear to be on the verge of changing. The fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2013 saw the company rake in revenues totaling $14.3 billion, which is up slightly from Q3, but down 11 percent from the same period last year. The story gets even worse when looking at profit. A net income of $530 million represented a 31 percent drop year-over-year. Again, not nearly as bad as last quarter, but still a stunningly steep drop off for a manufacturer that was once at the pinnacle of the industry. The crash is particularly stunning when you look at the consumer division, which was once Dell’s bread-and-butter.

Revenue there was down 24 percent year-over-year and operating income has dropped by a staggering 87 percent. In fact, almost every division within Dell has seen its revenue and income drop, with the exception of servers and networking, which enjoyed an 18 percent growth from Q4 of 2012, pulling in just over $2.6 billion. As we’ve said before, though, the few enterprise-related bright spots are likely not enough to hold off the company’s continued slide. Lets just hope that loan from Microsoft is put to good use. Dell Reports Fourth Quarter, Full Fiscal Year Financial Results
Revenue of $14.3 billion in fourth quarter, $56.9 billion for the year

ROUND ROCK, Texas, Feb 19, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) — –GAAP earnings of $0.30 per share in quarter, $1.35 per share for full year; non-GAAP earnings of $0.40 per share in quarter and $1.72 per share for full year

–Cash flow from operations of $1.4 billion; $3.3 billion for fiscal year

Dell announced fiscal 2013 fourth quarter and full-year results today, with revenue of $14.3 billion for the quarter and $56.9 billion for the year. Revenue from enterprise solutions and services grew 6 percent in the quarter to $5.2 billion and was $19.4 billion, or 34 percent of Dell revenue for the fiscal year, a 4 percent gain over fiscal year 2012.

“We continued to execute our long-term strategy in Q4, and realized a 6 percent increase in our enterprise solutions and services business,” said Brian Gladden, Dell CFO. “We also continued to generate strong cash flow from operations of $1.4 billion in the quarter. Our strong balance sheet and cash position enabled the company to invest almost $5 billion in new capabilities and intellectual property this fiscal year, including great assets like Quest, SonicWall, Wyse and AppAssure.”

Results

— Revenue in the quarter was $14.3 billion, an 11 percent decrease from the previous year, and a 4 percent increase sequentially. Revenue for the 2013 fiscal year was $56.9 billion, an 8 percent decrease. Dell’s fiscal year 2012 had an extra week, which was incorporated into the company’s Q4 results.

— GAAP operating income for the quarter was $698 million, or 4.9 percent of revenue. Non-GAAP operating income was $954 million, or 6.7 percent of revenue. Gross margins for the quarter benefitted by approximately $250 million, primarily resulting from vendor settlements. For the fiscal year, GAAP operating income was $3 billion and non-GAAP operating income was $4 billion.

— GAAP earnings per share in the quarter was 30 cents, down 30 percent from the previous year; non-GAAP EPS was 40 cents, down 22 percent. For the fiscal year, GAAP EPS was $1.35, down 28 percent year over year and non-GAAP EPS was $1.72, down 19 percent.

— Cash flow from operations in the quarter was $1.4 billion, and Dell ended Q4 with $15.3 billion in cash and investments. Full-year cash flow from operations was $3.3 billion.

Products and Solutions:

— Dell server revenue increased 5 percent driven by strong growth in the company’s hyper-scale data center solutions business and migration to the company’s 12th-generation servers. The 12G-server line now represents almost 80 percent of Dell PowerEdge server revenue at average selling prices and margins that are a premium over previous-generation servers.

— Dell networking continued to deliver strong growth, with a 42 percent revenue increase, including more than 100 percent growth in the company’s Force10 business.

— Dell Quest software delivered revenue over the company’s stated target of $180-$200 million for the quarter. The company’s security software business also grew sequentially.

— Dell desktop and mobility business revenue declined 20 percent and was up 3 percent sequentially.

Business Units and Regions:

— Large Enterprise had revenue of $4.7 billion in the quarter, a 7 percent decrease. Operating income for the quarter was $393 million, a 16 percent decrease. Server and networking revenue increased 25 percent and ES&S business grew 10 percent. Revenue for the full year was $17.8 billion, down 5 percent from the previous year.

— Public revenue was $3.5 billion, a 9 percent decrease. Operating income for the quarter was $236 million, a 25 percent decrease. Servers and networking revenue grew 11 percent. Revenue for the full year was $14.8 billion, down 8 percent from the previous year.

— Small and Medium Business revenue was $3.4 billion, a 5 percent decrease. Operating income for the quarter was $385 million, a 4 percent decrease. SMB enterprise solutions and services sales increased 9 percent for the quarter, driven by servers and networking growth of 13 percent and services revenue growth of 17 percent. Revenue for the full year was $13.4 billion, down 1 percent from the previous year.

— Consumer revenue was $2.8 billion, a 24 percent decline for the quarter. Operating income was $8 million, an 87 percent decrease. Revenue for the full year was $10.9 billion, down 20 percent from the previous year.

— EMEA revenue decreased 14 percent in the quarter, Americas was down 10 percent, and Asia-Pacific and Japan declined 9 percent.

Company Outlook:

Given the company’s announcement Feb. 5 of a definitive merger agreement to take Dell private, the company is not providing an outlook for its fiscal 2014 or Q1.

(1) In the first quarter of Fiscal 2013, Dell made certain segment realignments in order to conform to the way Dell now internally manages segment performance. These realignments affected all of Dell’s operating segments, but primarily consisted of the transfer of small office business customers from the Small and Medium Business segment to the Consumer Segment. Dell has recast prior period amounts to provide visibility and comparability. None of these changes impacts Dell’s previously reported consolidated net revenue, gross margin, operating income, net income, or earnings per share.
