OFF Pocket blocks all signals to your phone, and keeps you untrackable

OFF-Pocket

There are a lot of reasons to be worried about your privacy these days. It seems as though our emails, phone calls and texts are all subject to viewing by a government agency somewhere. You can prevent this sort of tracking by using some services to encrypt your messages, but what about the fact that your phone can be used to track your location at any given time? You’ll need some extra protection against that.

The OFF Pocket is a small pouch for your phone that blocks virtually every signal that is sent to and from your phone. This includes WiFi, cellular and GPS signals. This is accomplished by using a special fabric that’s made up of metalized fibers. These fibers are able to block any signals that try to get through. The exterior of the case is both strong, and repels water, to ensure that your phone is safe and sound inside the pocket. Interestingly, they’ve chosen to hold the opening flap in place by using elastic bands, rather than any other fastener.

If you need to make sure that you can’t be tracked down, even when your phone is turned off, this OFF Pocket will set you back $85 on their Kickstarter page. Personally, I can’t recall a time that I was ever concerned that someone was tracking my location, but I suppose it’s simply the principle of the matter.

IKEA relies on Augmented Reality technology to make furniture shopping easier for customers

ikea-arFurniture giant IKEA has always provided a fun shopping experience, where kids can have their kids meals and play time at Småland, while the meatballs are always a top draw. You can practically spend an entire day there with your family while the whole bunch of you shops for different bits and pieces that you think would fit into the new home. Well, considering how times have changed, IKEA too, wants to keep up to date by offering Augmented Reality (AR) technology which makes it easier for customers to shop.

Needless to say, this AR tech would require shoppers to own a compatible smartphone, but then again, who does not have a smartphone these days? Apart from that, the mobile app would also allow customers to “test” furniture from the comfort of their own home, now how about that? We will be able to see the most extensive ever use of Augmented Reality (AR) by IKEA when they roll out the new mobile catalogue later this month.

AR will be used to place its products into customers’ rooms, letting them find the right fit, and when August 25th rolls around on the calendar, you will find the app launched in the Apple App Store and Google Play. The 2014 IKEA Catalogue app will enable customers to literally try out 90 products for size (of course, they will also take shape, color and positioning into consideration as well) in their own homes. The app will rely on the catalogue to judge the approximate scale of the furnishings, where it will measure the size of the catalogue itself when laid on the floor in the camera, resulting in an augmented reality image of the furnishings in order for it to appear as correct as possible in the room. This enables customers to check out just how different IKEA sofas, chairs, beds, bookcases, chests of drawers and desks will look like in their rooms virtually, all through your smartphone camera.

Of course, there will still be a print version of the IKEA catalog, but AR tech is definitely breathing new life into the furniture shopping experience!

Apps on Toast – Helps you keep your Eyes on the Road

Unknown

There are a lot of things you can do that can distract you when you’re driving. I get the reasons why they have made using your phone against the law, but what I don’t get is why eating, smoking, putting on your makeup and reading is still okay. I don’t know how to help get dolled up or have a snack more safely, but I did find something that might help you stay in touch with the outside world, all while cruising the open road.

Check out Apps on Toast’s newest offering, the completely voice controlled, Car Dock. The Car Dock is designed to help you keep your eyes on the road, and your little hands on the wheel (at 10 and 2 o’clock!)  while making phone calls and texting your heart out. Apps on Toast Car Dock lets you send texts by voice and call anyone without even touching the phone, and you can start or stop music and navigation, just by speaking.

Think of it, no matter what kind of car you have, when the Car Dock is running your incoming calls will be announced and you can simply speak aloud your decision to answer the call or kick it to the curb, or you can opt to simply respond with a text. Incoming sms text messages will be read aloud to you, and you can send your response without ever looking at your phone. You can speak navigation instructions, or make calls, all without distraction.

The Ultimate Car Dock has a speedometer option, is designed for Android smartphones, and you can try it for free for seven days, or you can buy it right now on Google Play. So now life would be almost perfect if I could just find an app that would feed me a handsfree burger and fries and then touch up my lipgloss.

Moto X Phone – Okay Google Now!

Motorola_Moto_X_57586940_20_610x436

I love my iPhone. Not because I’m an Apple fan-girl, but because I just happen to love technology. I have PC’s and a Mac, and I show no loyalty to one brand or another. I just like whatever it is thats new, cutting edge or just different. I don’t like to involve myself in the politics of it all, and I don’t pay much attention to where the tech comes from, I just like to have a little bit of all of it… and I think I just found my new phone.

Check out the Moto X, Google’s newest “American-made” offering to the smartphone arena, the Moto X promises to be your constant companion, utilizing a permanent listening mode, you need only utter the words “Okay, Google now.” in order to awaken your phone and enquire about the weather, get directions, or call your mother, all without ever touching the phone.

Google’s Moto X is not only pushing the limits of “touch-free” communications, but is exploring the ease and convenience of motion controls as well. Sensors integrated into the phone and linked to the 10 megapixel camera, allow you to quickly initialize it by two vigorous flicks of the wrist, and you can snap away at the action by simply touching any part of the screen.

Did I mention that you’ll be able to select from 18 color options for the back coupled with a black or white front, and seven trim choices. You can also upgrade  memory, put a message on the back of the phone, pick the wallpaper and preconfigure your phone to go with your Google account? Yup. Is this all new? revolutionary? Life altering? I don’t know, but it sure sounds like a cool gadget to me, so I want one. If you do too, check out motorola.com for more info, or to register for updates.

GoCuff smartphone fitness case

gocuffWhen it comes to cases for your smartphone, you know for sure that these are dime a dozen out there in the market. The thing is, how do you get a smartphone case that stands out from the rest of the crowd? The GoCuff could very well fit the bill perfectly – it is the first iPhone and Android fitness case of its kind that offers you complete and unhindered access to your phone with but a simple glance or touch. In a nutshell, the GoCuff is the new and improved sport cuff that will empower you to quickly and easily engage with your smartphone without missing a beat. It will be different from all of the other traditional armbands that you would come across, where placement at your wrist and its touch-sensitive screen would pave the way for a more natural method of accessing it when using fitness apps, GPS navigation, answering a call or even checking out the most recent text message.

Touted to be anatomically and ergonomically engineered for majority of us humans out there, it would not restrict your movement at all, since it allows for a full range of motion at the wrist, ranging from running all the way to pushups. Apart from that, it will also let you access your phone’s capability and data regardless of the activity that you are involved in via a PVC touch-sensitive screen. It does not matter if you are jiving with the iPhone, a handset from Samsung or HTC – they will all play nice with the GoCuff.

Should it actually gain enough financial backing from the masses, it will arrive in a trio of sizes – namely small, medium and large. Not only that, it will play nice with Strava, MapMyFitness and Nike+, while you can preview GoPro video and photo instantly using the appropriate app. The GoCuff will also be able to track elevation gain and GPS while you ski or snowboard, while doing away with the need for supplemental GPS on a motorcycle to boot. Should its Kickstarter goal be met, the production timeline for overseas markets would occur sometime in mid-Sept to mid-Oct 2013, and Kickstarter backers would ideally be able to receive their respective GoCuffs in early November.

LG QuickWindow Case for the upcoming LG G2

It goes without saying that every single company needs a defining product that they can call their flagship, as that would represent the pinnacle of the company’s achievement in that particular niche. For instance, when it comes to the world of smartphones, Nokia of Finland has their recently introduced Nokia Lumia 1020 with a whopping 41-megapixel camera, while Samsung has been riding high with their Samsung Galaxy S4 (and its many variants) for some time already, with Apple preparing a new iPhone, leaving the iPhone 5 to be the standard bearer at the moment. What about LG? Well, LG used to have its Optimus G Pro as its flagship device, but in the months to come, we do know that there is a new smartphone arriving that will take over the Optimus G Pro, and that would be the LG G2. Having said that, the LG G2, being a flagship smartphone, should be accompanied by a case worthy of its calling, no? This is where the LG QuickWindow case comes in.

The LG QuickWindow is said to be an aesthetically beautiful case, and it would certainly set a high standard for the rest of LG’s growing premium smartphone accessory range which will comprise of cases, headsets and portable chargers. Why is it called the LG QuickWindow? Well, the answer is pretty obvious thanks to an opening or “window” that is located on the cover of the QuickWindow, allowing users to take a glance at different information displays without having to go through the hassle of opening the cover flap.

With but a light swipe of a finger, the QuickWindow UX will appear in the window which users are able to check out while on-the-go. All information that can be viewed through the QuickWindow cover are important ones, including a clock, weather report, alarm, music player, incoming phone call details and incoming text messages.

We have no word on pricing, but it should arrive in seven different colors including black, white, pink, purple, blue, mint and yellow at the same time that the LG G2 is unveiled.

Monkey King ThL W11 is first 13-megapixel front cameraphone in the world

When it comes to high end smartphones, you can be sure that there is quite a fair number to choose from. Sony has their flagship Xperia Z, while Samsung rocks on with the fourth iteration of the Galaxy S series in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S4. As for HTC, the company might not be doing too hot in the past few quarters, but this does not mean that they are left behind the race. In fact, their HTC One has made quite an impressive splash in recent months, and there is also LG with the Optimus G Pro, Nokia with their Lumia 1020, while China-based Oppo has their high end Find 7 model. While these tend to have a camera which works pretty great, so much so that they can even double up as a replacement for your regular digital camera under most casual circumstances, the front-facing camera does capture decent self portraits, but they aren’t enough when it comes to the amount of pixels. ThL of China hopes to deliver far better looking self portraits, with the Monkey King ThL W11 touted to be the first 13-megapixel front camera smartphone in the world.

Just what kind of hardware can we find underneath the hood? Well, the Monkey King ThL W11 will run on the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system for starters, where it will be powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz MT6589 processor, sporting rendering speeds of up to 357MHz, a 5” Full HD IPS display, 2GB RAM, 32GB ROM, and a 2,100mAh battery.

Sure, the front-facing camera might sport a whopping 13-megapixels, making this up the ante by a whole bunch, but the back at 13-megapixels is not going to impress anyone since smartphone cameras these days do come with a pretty high sizeable count. Still, it is enough to take more than decent photos, although we do hope that the quality of the software to process the images taken will be up to par. There will be no LTE connectivity with the Monkey King ThL W11 however, as it maxes out at 3G. No idea on pricing or availability, though.

Luxi turns your iPhone into a photographer’s light meter

There are a lot of factors that go into taking a great picture. You need a good subject, background, lighting, equipment, and the right angle. Of course, probably the most important thing to have is a good eye for photography. It’s amazing how a small change in your angle, or a few tweaked settings on your camera can make all the difference. But even the best eyes can’t see everything. Which is why it’s good to have a little help from your tools.

This Luxi Status Indicator is a small light diffusion dome that can be used with your iPhone. When you place it over the phone’s front-facing camera, it will be able to work with a special light meter app to give you the perfect settings for your DSLR. Once you hold it up next to your subject, you’ll be able to get a readout on the settings you’ll want to use on the camera. It will give you shutter speed, ISO, and aperture settings for you to use.

There are light meter apps on the market, however, the Luxi’s diffusion dome is what will make the difference when you’re using it. It should give a more accurate reading of the light. The small accessory doesn’t come with a big price, either. Just $25 will get you on the pre-order list. Yours will ship in 4-8 weeks.

HTC launches HTC One mini

Every single company would do well to release a flagship device of their own – it is not only a matter of technological achievement, but one of pride as well. After all, what is the point of tooting your trumpet if you do not have a flagship that is capable of duking it out with the best of the rest out there? HTC knows that they have a winner with the HTC One on their hands in the recent past, where it has picked up mainly rave reviews from the masses as well as the press, but still, the HTC One was unable to help HTC deliver a stellar quarter when it comes to earnings. Having said that, this has not stopped HTC from moving in the right direction, and they have just announced the HTC One mini, keeping in vein with the “mini me” theme that smartphone manufacturers, Samsung especially, just love to play with these days.

The HTC One mini is said to be HTC’s ultimate 4.3” smartphone, after all, it does come with HTC BlinkFeed, HTC Zoe and HTC BoomSound, all features that are available on their HTC One flagship, too. The HTC One mini would continue in the same iconic design flow of the HTC One, where you will find that the 4.3” display is easy on the eyes, while a powerful dual-core 1.4 GHz processor helps run proceedings from underneath the hood. Not only that, it will also be powered by the most recent version of the Android operating system, where it will be accompanied by HTC Sense.

Coming in Glacial Silver and Stealth Black colors, the HTC One mini boasts of a striking aluminum unibody in a slim profile, looking premium regardless of which angle you’re starting it down from. Not only that, there is also HTC BoomSound, which is HTC’s dual frontal stereo speakers that deliver less distortion and finer detail, and headphone lovers will love the Beats Audio integration that delivers immersive audio to the next level. It remains to be seen just how much the HTC One mini will sell for, but it is tipped to arrive in select markets from August onwards, before a global rollout in September.
