Huawei W1 announced for the US

Another day, another smartphone hits the scene, and here we are faced with the China-based Huawei having announced Huawei W1. Right after the sponsorship announcement of the highly-anticipated Jonas Brothers Tour, Huawei has also thrown a new announcement of their maiden attempt to roll out the first Windows Phone 8 smartphone from their stables, which would be the Huawei W1, and this will happen sometime later this month online at Walmart.com in addition to select Walmart stores in the US.

Todd Greenberg, General Manager, US Windows Phone Sales at Microsoft, said, “We are proud to deliver a premium smartphone experience to customers at a competitive price point. The new Huawei W1 is a great addition to the Windows Phone 8 portfolio of devices in the U.S. with its impressive battery life and availability in Walmart stores.”

Just what kind of hardware specifications does the Huawei W1 bring to the table? Well, we are looking at a rather speedy dual-core 1.2GHz processor, which will be accompanied by optimized battery technology, in addition to a gorgeous 4” IPS LCD touch screen display that is made of Gorilla glass and will boast of decent performance even under direct sunlight, not to mention a 5-megapixel camera at the back, while the front would have a VGA camera for those moments when you want to hold video calls with another friend.

Running on the Windows Phone 8 operating system, which means the device would deliver a truly personal smartphone experience that ought to be able to fit unique needs and offer quick access to the people as well as other things that customers care about most.

Of course, all that remains now would be to know just which mobile carrier would offer the Huawei W1, and pricing details will depend on the kind of agreement or contract that is offered.

Nokia Asha 501 announced

Finnish phone manufacturer has yet another device released, but this time around, it will not be on the high end side of things considering how it will not run on the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system. In fact, this will be a feature phone, but does that mean the new Nokia Asha 501 does not deserve any kind of news coverage? That would be anathema to me – at least, as Nokia intends to position the Nokia Asha 501 to break down plenty of barriers and smash people’s expectations of just how much ‘smartphone’ that their hard earned money is able to buy.

First of all, let us get this out of the way – the Nokia Asha 501 might not be a smartphone, but this does not mean that folks who pick one up are going to lose out on touchscreen goodness. No sir, you will find the Nokia Asha 501 capable of delivering the full touchscreen experience, complete with social networks, content sharing and connectivity that has been deeply integrated into a wonderful, responsive and revamped operating system.

It will be compatible with the GSM 900/1800 + WLAN and GSM 850/1900 + WLAN bands, falling back on the Nokia Asha platform user interface, but this will not come with a dual SIM slot. There is a 3” QVGA TFT capacitive display to get things going with your fingers, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and I am quite sure the 128MB of internal memory is far from sufficient in this day and age – which is why the engineers over at Nokia has decided to throw in a memory card slot that is expandable up to 32GB, if you get the right MMC card, of course. Other connectivity options include Micro USB, a 3.5mm AV jack, and a 2mm charger connector.

The Asha 501 will come in bright red, bright green, cyan, yellow, white and black colors, where each purchase will be accompanied by a pair of red headphones right out of the box. It costs $99 a pop from Q2 onwards.

Nokia pays homage to Sir Alex Ferguson with customized Nokia Lumia 920

Yes, I am quite sure that many people are still in shock over Sir Alex Ferguson’s recent announcement that he was going to retire after being at the helm of Manchester United since 1986, where along the way, the most decorated manager of modern times have picked up a whopping 38 trophies, certainly making him one of the most outstanding football managers regardless of the era. His crown jewels include 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and a couple of Champions League titles amongst others, which is why Nokia decided to celebrate and pay homage to the man by introducing a customized red version of the Nokia Lumia 920, where the back has been engraved with the following words.

“Sir Alex Chapman Ferguson. Manchester United Manager 1986 – 2013. Good luck Sir Alex”, and I do wonder whether any Manchester United fan who picks up this special edition of the Lumia 920 would actually use it as his or her primary handset, or rather, would this device be bagged and sealed so that the eternal words behind would never be chapped off?

Samsung Galaxy Core announced

Another day, and here we are with another smartphone from consumer electronics giant Samsung. This time around, it will not be a handset from the Galaxy family, but rather, we are looking at the Samsung Galaxy Core, which is a smartphone that is specially designed to offer users dual core processing power when it comes to multitasking purposes, dual SIM technology for easy transition between work and play, not to mention a slew of innovative smart features. Samsung touts that the Galaxy Core will be able to operate seamlessly and effectively regardless of whether you have purchased it for work or for play.

What can we find underneath the chassis of the Samsung Galaxy Core? For starters, this will be a mid-range smartphone which intends to achieve a balance of portability and power, where it comes equipped with a 1.2GHz dual core processor that enables you to perform data intensive tasks with speed and ease. You will find 8GB of internal memory good enough for the average user, although those who tend to carry plenty of multimedia files on their smartphones would be pleased with the inclusion of a microSD memory card slot.

1GB RAM will be accompanied by a 4.3” display, which is pretty much the norm in this day and age. As for battery life, we are looking at a long-lasting 1,800mAh battery that should be good for extended usage. Love capturing things as they happen? You should not be able to go wrong with the 5-megapixel camera at the back, while in front, there is also another camera for you to carry out all those video calls and video conferences. The productivity nuts around you need not tote two handsets around any more, as the Samsung Galaxy Core comes with Dual SIM technology, letting you use both SIM cards simultaneously – which is definitely different from the days of yore where only one SIM card could be used at any one time despite the handset holding a couple of these SIM cards.

LG Optimus F5 launched in Europe

Sometimes, I do wonder how come it does take some time between a particular smartphone’s announcement and its release date, perhaps there needs to be plenty of marketing material and co-ordination made between the mobile carriers and the smartphone manufacturer itself during the time in between. Well, the LG Optimus F5 was launched successfully by all means at Mobile World Congress earlier this February in Berlin, Germany, where it was positioned to be in a rather unique market – that is, to deliver 4G LTE connectivity to the masses in a mid-range Android-powered smartphone that should not break the bank for those on a tight budget.

Morephone Prototype Shape Shifts Instead Of Ringing To Notify Users

The Morephone is an interesting prototype, one that offers a glimpse of what mobile phones of the future may look like. It is based on a very unique concept, the phone has a flexible display and it subtly shape shifts instead of ringing whenever the user needs to be notified. For example, calls are often missed when one’s phone is on silent, but this concept certainly presents a fix for that problem.

Users are also able to customize how the Morephone “morphs,” this way users can ascertain on a single glance at the phone’s shape which type of alert they’re receiving. This prototype has been developed by researchers of the Human Media Lab at Queens University. It is evident from the video posted above that the Morephone is in no condition to hit the market, though the researchers believe that the technology will be ready for public release in the next five to ten years. However it is indeed amazing to watch this prototype morph when it needs to notify the user. I can only imagine what the phone would look like if there are a bunch of different notifications that make it morph in their own separate ways!

V-Moda delivers Metallo smartphone case

I am quite sure that many of us have heard the name of V-Moda before, and this time around, they have unveiled yet another smartphone case for the masses, although it will concentrate more on the high end models. I am referring to the new Metallo designer cases from V-Moda that will cater for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5, where each Metallo case’s main reason of existence is to defend your smartphone without compromising on style, while offering a perfect balance of solid tactile feel and lightweight portability. Sounds like a dream, doesn’t it?

The V-Moda Metallo was specially designed as a standalone case, but it also has a “hidden power” so to speak, that is, to work in parallel with V-Moda’s recently announced VAMP VERZA mobile Hi-Fi amplifier, DAC, and battery charger. This definitely helps make life easier for those who want to build a collection of accessories around a single brand, not to mention having the brand’s design DNA infused in each of these individual accessories for a more uniform look. The V-Moda Metallo will come with interchangeable back plates to deliver maximum versatility, and will include a solid aluminum plate and the Verzadock that will bolt itself onto VAMP VERZA’s 4-bolt main design, allowing you to slide and lock the smartphone to this portable audio powerhouse.

Just like many of the newer devices and accessories these days, the Metallo too, has been forged from the fires of Mount Doom itself – nay, I jest, but rather, from a single aluminum metal block that is machine milled and laser-cut via a state-of-the-art, precise design process which requires a full hour to complete each case. Got to love the unique V-ANGLE design as well as tactile audio feedback of switching back plates that sounds as though you are unsheathing a sword. Sharp! The asking price for the Metallo for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 would be $101, where it will arrive in Red Coral, Silver Snake, Orange Serpente and Black Mamba designs.

ABI: Budget smartphones will equal half of all smartphone shipments in future

It looks like it won’t just be low-cost Android tablets that will see a huge boost in the market, but low-budget smartphones as well. According to ABI Research, in the year 2018, budget smartphones will equal about 46% of all smartphone shipments, which is 28% higher than today. Currently, 259 million budget smartphones are expected to ship this year, but in 5 years, that number will increase to a whopping 788 million.

ABI budget smartphones to equal half of all smartphone shipments inf uture

ABI Research classifies smartphones in 3 tiers. The low-cost smartphones are below $250, the mid-ranged smartphones cost between $250-$400, and the high-end smartphones cost $400 and up. According to ABI’s data, mid-ranged and high-end smartphones will see growth in 2018 as well, with their joint smartphone shipments totaling 925 million, nearly 300 million more than the 635 million expected to ship this year.

Michael Morgan, a Senior Analyst for ABI Research, stated that as more users begin migrating away from their feature phones, they decide to transition to low-cost smartphones rather than diving straight in with a high-end smartphone. He also states that emerging markets, as well as customers who opt for prepaid plans, are the main drivers for the huge boost in low-cost smartphone sales.

ABI Research isn’t the only company seeing a trend in high budget smartphone sales. The analysts at CIRP discovered that nearly 50% of all iPhone sales in Q1 2013 were from older generation iPhones. CIRP discovered that most of these customers were upgrading from their old feature phones, and preferred to get an iPhone 4 for free, or an iPhone 4S for $99 on a new two-year contract, instead of paying $199 for the iPhone 5. Other analysts stated that if Apple were to release a budget iPhone, it would most likely sell 75 million units in 2014 alone.
