When it comes to the world of Android-powered smartphones, you can say that the range of choices are too many to name. After all, with so many manufacturers in the market, it can be quite difficult to make a choice. Sony, ever since making the break away from their partnership with Ericsson, has come up with their fair share of more than decent devices in recent months, and their upcoming device, the Sony Xperia TL, is tipped for a release by AT&T later this November 2nd. AT&T has set the asking price of the Sony Xperia TL to be $99.99, where it will come with a new two-year agreement. The Sony Xperia TL will be featured in the upcoming 007 film, Skyfall, as part of Sony’s marketing campaign.

The Sony Xperia TL boasts of Sony’s best HD capture and viewing experiences, not to mention being able to share content across different devices courtesy of One-touch connectivity with near field communication (NFC).

For starters, the Sony Xperia TL will feature a 13-megapixel primary camera that is capable of capturing even the smallest of details to life. In addition, this high resolution fast capture camera will be able to enter the first shot from standby mode in a mere 1.5 seconds, which is enough to capture even some of life’s unexpected moments. Regardless of whether you are using the back or front facing cameras, either one are able to capture video in High Definition quality.

The Sony Xperia TL comes with a superb 4.6-inch HD Reality Display at 1280 x 720 resolution which is powered by the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Should you want to watch content from your smartphone screen to the TV screen, the Xperia TL will be able to do so via HDMI with MHL support or wirelessly through DLNA. NFC technology will also allow the Xperia SmartTags for you to perform a range of customizable functions for different locations and situations. Any takers for this smartphone from Sony Mobile?

IDC: Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC’s third quarter figures are in, complete with a few unexpected shake-ups. The entire cellphone market grew 2.4% over the same time last year, but smartphones drove the majority of that, showing growth of 45.3% and beating the analysts’ expectations. Of the 179.7 million smartphones shipped, Samsung and Apple devices accounted for almost half of them, with the companies retaining their number one and two positions in the market, respectively. IDC notes that iPhone shipments didn’t increase, but this is somewhat expected given the latest iteration was released only a short time before the end of the quarter. What we find particularly interesting is that Nokia was ousted from the top five smartphone players and replaced by RIM. Whether Nokia’s upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices will put it back in contention remains to be seen, as does the effect BB10 and RIM’s new handsets will have on the market. ZTE finished fourth in the list thanks to increased sales in North America, with HTC rounding up the top five vendors with continued uptake of its power devices. With a bunch of new handsets coming to the table and the holiday season fast approaching, look out for even more surprises in the fourth quarter numbers, due early next year.

“Watch” Me Charge

Face it. There are some inconvenient times and places to see “1% battery” on your device. Be it during an important phone call, while you are about to break a video game record or taking a picture with your favorite actor who happened to be on your airplane flight – battery drainage never seems to happen at a good time. Plenty of portable charging devices exist, yet many take the inconvenient shape of a brick.

Miniinthebox sells a more convenient power option for those critical charge times. Meet the Wrist Watch Pattern 1500mAh Portable Battery, $34.99. No it isn’t a watch, but being patterned after one means the spare power lives closest to where your device is held. So make that call, keep playing your game or take that picture in confidence. 1500mAh probably won’t get you through the day. But it will get you some solid hours of use – at least enough to get you to a charger. The unit comes with Lithium ion battery wrist band with mini-USB output, charging cord and 7 different adaptors to cover most major phone brands and Nintendo DS. So share it around the house or use it on your different devices. But most importantly have an extra charge right near the palm of your hand.

Nokia Lumia 510 announced, carries Windows Phone 7.5 with it

Nokia did make quite a splash with their high end Windows Phone 8 handsets being announced not too long ago, where the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 certainly brought about its fair share of fans. In fact, the Lumia 920 is shaping up pretty nicely to be able to hold its own against other flagship models in the market, but what about those who do not have the kind of freely flowing cash? I guess this is where a compromise comes in handy – settling for somewhere in the middle, or in the case of the Nokia Lumia 510, it would be somewhere more towards the entry level market.

After all, the Nokia Lumia 510 will not run on Windows Phone 8 at all, but rather, it will ply its trade on the Windows Phone 7.5 platform, which is a half-way point between Windows Phone 7 and its successor, the powerful Windows Phone 8. Having said that, the Lumia 510’s announcement would clearly make it the Finnish company’s most affordable Lumia to date, and this does not mean that Nokia has compromised on quality and style, as you can choose from five eye-catching colors: red, yellow, cyan, white and black.

I am quite sure that many of us would ask, just what kind of entry level specifications could we be looking at over here? For starters, there is a 4-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display at 800 × 480 resolution, while its 256MB RAM will be accompanied by 4GB of internal memory. Power users, you know for sure that this is not the handset for you. Nokia has also thrown in a 5-megapixel auto-focus that does video recording in VGA resolution @30fps, which is nothing to shout about – but rather, you will not find the likes of this in higher specced handsets.

Nokia expects the Lumia 510 to be available from next month onwards in India, China, South America and Asia, with an approximate price tag of $199 prior to local taxes and operator subsidies. Would you be interested?

No Brainer USB Charger

Cords and cables. Aren’t they great? Look next to your bed or under your desk. I think it has become standard protocol to have a rat’s nest wherever you charge devices.

Leave it to the experts at Energizer to come up with a stylish way to charge.  The Energizer 5W Premium USB Wall Charger gives you a USB ports on a device with a fold out (US) plug. The advantage is the cable management however. This charger lets you easily wind your cord around the device for easy cable management. And it can handle a thicker cable. Oh and if that is not enough it even comes with a micro USB cable. While charging the light turns blue then turns off when done. And for just $14.62 on Amazon.com why not? You know you will get a quality product from Energizer.

So Much More Than a Case

With the introduction of the iPhone 5 come the introduction of a slew of cases. Some are totally new, but some simply adapt previous generations to the new iPhone form factor. And while all protect your phone, few actually enhance the phone.

Meet iZZi Gadgets, makers of the Orbit. The Orbit offers a trio of interchangeable lenses – fisheye, wide-angle and telephoto – right on the case. Changing lenses is as easy as twisting the iDial. And the case is no slouch either. The duraluminum dual layer protection offers ample cushion for the inevitable blows. iZZi’s Sure Hand Stabilizing Grip gives it a true camera feel too – easier for holding on. And for the videographer the Orbit comes equipped with three tripod mounts to meet your need. The Orbit costs a little more than the average case, going to show the quality of the lense systems. The iPhone 5 version runs $239.99 and the 4/4S version $229.99 on iZZi Gadgets site. Included for the price are the case, protective sleeve, wrist lanyard and cleaning cloth. And yes, replacement lenses are available at a cost should you need them. If the quality of the case interests you, but you don’t need 3 lenses try the Solo, which saves about $100. Whatever you do don’t let your iPhone’s camera limit your photo and video capabilities. Augment them with the Orbit or Solo.

A Wet Gadget Savior

Admit it. You or someone you know has done it. Personally I have done it twice. Once in a football stadium, once in the rain.  It is a careless move, usually brought on while rushing around. Yep, you know what I mean. You have subjected your phone to water! And if not a phone then perhaps an MP3 player, iPod or headphones. Being a veteran I can say some are recoverable. My phone in the rain was cured through a night in some uncooked rice. But some – like phone dropped in the toilet while at a game – have no hope simply because the supplies don’t exist when the mishap occurs.

We all need RescueTec hanging around. RescueTec consists of a multi-layer aluminum foil pouch on the outside. Internally a recovery sachet contains a compound that attracts the water to it – essentially like a magenet. It pulls both water and vapor out of your drowned device. Conveniently, RescueTec tells you how much humidity is still present in the bag so you can judge when to remove your phone or gadget – though the makers recommend a minimum of 48 hours in the bag.  So does it work? According to their website yes. They tested on many major gadgets with big success and stories to illustrate. This ingenious device claims to be up to 700% more effective than the dry rice trick, and over 300% more effective than Silica Gel. If that does not convince you then take a look at their money back guarantee. RescueTec runs £16.99 (about $27.50) plus shipping to anywhere in the world.  A pretty minor investment for a smartphone or other device that rules parts of our lives. RescueTec makes sense to have in our car, suitcase, home or wherever an emergency may occur. Why risk not being prepared to save your mobile buddy?

Smell-o-phone on the Horizon

Smartphones stimulate 3 of the 5 senses. Touch, sight and hearing are all impacted. But what about the other two? Taste – well ok, maybe that won’t ever happen. Who wants to lick their phone? Eeeeewww. But what about smell? We talk about, and some have attempted, the advertisers dream of  ‘smell-o-vision’ TV. And now a Japanese company will soon reportedly launch an iPhone gadget to stimulate your snout.

As reported by CNET, Chaku Perfume developed Chat Perf, an iPhone app and attachable accessory to convey smells. An atomizer and smell tank come in the device which attaches to the phone’s dock. Someone on the other end of the phone could then deliver a smell through your phone which is translated through the app. The attachment then releases the smell. The possibilities, particularly for advertisers, are limitless. Imagine your favorite restaurant sending the waft of a seasoned steak. Or maybe a laundromat infusing their coupons with the scent of freshly washed laundry. As CNET points out, Samsung already filed for a patent on a phone with smell producing device potentially delaying Chat Perf’s entry into the US. If that does not delay them the anticipated price over $60 may be somewhat prohibitive. But who knows. Maybe smell-o-smartphones are the wave of the future and our nose will get as bombarded as our eyes and ears.
