Motorola Atrix HD arrives on AT&T

When it comes to the world of smartphones, right now the market can be said to be fragmented into three different groups – the Windows Phone platform is one of them, occupying a minority spot, while the other two would be the Android operating system from Google as well as iOS from Apple. AT&T’s latest offering, the Motorola Atrix HD, is clearly part of the Android camp, where from this Sunday onwards, it will be made available in all AT&T channels for $99.99 a pop. Do not be charmed by the relatively low price point at first glance, as it would mean you will have to agree with a new two-year agreement.

Still, that would be better than purchasing a phone outright as an unlocked model, since you would have to get a data and voice line for the phone anyways. Not only that, if you are already a regular of AT&T for so many years, why not continue the trend and stick to the Motorola Atrix HD for a couple more years? Let us take a closer look at what the Motorola Atrix HD is able to offer underneath the hood in the extended post, shall we?

It goes without saying that the Motorola Atrix HD is the latest addition to Motorola’s Atrix family, where it measures an incredibly thin 8.4mm, but do not think that this is fragile at any time. After all, this puppy is made out of Kevlar, the same kind of material used for bullet proof vests, making it incredibly stable in any situation. Apart from that, the Motorola Atrix HD will also feature a high-tech, invisible nano-coating that doubles up as a splash guard for the outer shell as well as for the electrical circuit boards within.

Owners of the Motorola Atrix HD might find the smartphone to be worth their while thanks to the pre-loaded SMARTACTIONS, which is a free app from Motorola which actually suggests ways to automatically change your phone’s settings throughout the day in order to let you fall into a comfortable routine. For instance, should you place the Motorola ATRIX HD in the Vehicle Navigation Dock accessory and enable Drive Smart, it will automatically send the handset into vehicle mode, reading out any of your text messages, in addition to sending auto-replies to incoming calls and texts while delivering turn-by-turn navigation.

Other hardware specifications include a vibrant 4.5-inch HD ColorBoost display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities, and a front-facing 720p HD camera. This will be an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich powered device, so you need not fret about not having the latest operating system version, that’s for sure.

MediaTek partners with Twitter on feature phone integration

MediaTek made headlines not too long ago when it promised to bring dual-core processors to phones costing $199 and under. Now the company has announced a partnership with Twitter that will see the social network integrated with devices featuring MediaTek chips so that users in emerging markets can get in on the tweeting action. MediaTek will bundle Twitter into its reference design for phones as a result of the partnership.

MediaTek will include Twitter in its MRE middleware, enabling “smart-feature phones” that will run Twitter with minimal hardware requirements. Manufacturers can keep offering cheap handsets, and Twitter will reaching a massive user base of customers used to purchasing affordable phones. The app that will be included is said to be a native experience comparable to Twitter for iPhone or Android.

The first chipset that will feature Twitter integration is the MediaTek MT6255, although MediaTek says that Twitter will expand to all of its solutions later on. That would open up the massive Chinese and Asian market to Twitter, as well as other developing markets that current buy devices using MediaTek’s silicon.

Myanmar plans to open doors to foreign telcos for affordable cellular, internet service

Myanmar plans to open doors to foreign telcos for affordable cellular, internet service

Hefty price tags haven’t exactly made cellphones ubiquitous in cash-strapped Myanmar. According to AFP, an estimated 96 percent of the nation’s 60 million inhabitants don’t own a mobile handset, but that might soon be changing. A new reform plan announced by Myanmar’s Post and Telecommunication Minister, Thein Tun, lays out a strategy that could finally give said folks a crack at affordable cellular and internet services. If succesful, the initiative will start a bidding process for international telcos to set up shop in the country, allowing the companies to partner with the state-owned telephone provider and the ISP Yatanarpon Teleport. There’s no word on when the partnerships may coalesce, but here’s to hoping that $200 SIM card registration fees in Myanmar soon become a thing of the past. Full details at the source link below.

Sony Smartwatch – Cool Enough, but is it Big Enough?

Everyone knew a Smartwatch was coming. Somehow I expected it to be Apple’s. I remember reading somewhere that a Smartwatch was on Steve Jobs to do list, and I am aware that Cupertino is working things up as we speak. On the surface it seems like an awesome idea and a gadget I would like to own. Then I got to wondering, would the screen even be big enough to have any real usefulness, check this out and let us know what you think.

Welcome Sony’s Smartwatch, a neat little Android mini-accoutrement that keeps you connected to your digital world via your Smartphone, quietly, discreetly, and mostly hands-free. Worn on a clip, or the stylish wristband included with the watch, you can download a number of compatible applications, and make your new Smartwatch your own personalized media and communications center.

The Sony Smartwatch comes with an multi color, ultra sensitive touch display that allow you to tap and swipe your way through your chosen digital universe (although I’m wondering about accuracy, even with the smallest of fingers) The Smartwatch lets you check your mail or the weather, listen to music or twitter your face off and also be able to check and see who’s been trying to reach you, even if your phone is safe in your pocket.

Perfect for working out, walking or shopping, the Sony Smartwatch lets you leave your phone in your bag, briefcase or pocket and still be updated on everything you might want to know. The Smartwatch is dust proof, splash proof and comes in a high tech looking aluminum case. The real question is, with its need to be associated via bluetooth with a compatible android phone, and its small touch screen do you think it has any real value at 149 bucks? If you do, you can get one today,  from sony.com.

Exploded Samsung Galaxy S3 is a sham

There have been cases of exploding smartphones in the past, or basically, handsets that just caught fire without any prior notice, but it is a good thing that no deaths to date have been attributed to an exploding phone – smart or otherwise. I am sure the guys would be extremely relieved, knowing that there is the danger of the family jewels being exposed to the unnecessary risk of a wild bushfire in the event that something like this happens. When the Samsung Galaxy S3 was announced to the masses recently, this was touted to be the next best thing since sliced bread – of course, this would be from Samsung’s point of view.

Generally speaking, most folks would find the Galaxy S3 to be a worthy successor to the Galaxy S2, and reviews to date have been more or less favorable towards this Android-powered device. However, it was not too long ago that someone reported that his spanking new Galaxy S3 smartphone caught fire, and this happened in Ireland last month, which obviously sparked off concerns that Samsung might have rolled out a subpar product. I guess truth stands eternal, and in time (just a month or so later), investigation results by fire investigators claimed otherwise, where an external energy source was responsible for the fiery incident.

Samsung mentioned that an investigation led by Fire Investigations (UK) did state specifically that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is not the culprit responsible for the cause of the fire, where an “external energy source was responsible for generating the heat”. This is in stark contrast to what a Dublin-based consumer posted on a website last month, where he commented that his Galaxy S3 had “exploded” while mounted on his car dashboard. This happened as he was driving, where a white flame, complete with sparks and a bang, came out from his phone.

FI-UK, an independent British provider of consultancy services into fires and explosions whom Samsung hired to determine the cause of the fire, said after a battery of tests, “The only way it was possible to produce damage similarly to the damage recorded within the owner’s damaged device was to place the devices or component parts with a domestic microwave.”

It seemed that the entire thing had been a sham all this while, where the unnamed user’s latest comments claimed that the phone was recovered from water and the damage “occurred due to a large amount of external energy” – which was the cause of the fire, as he most probably microwaved his phone to dry it out. I do not know whether to laugh or to cry though, what about you? Definitely a face palm moment.

Researchers develop system to block phone use while driving

We all know about the dangers of talking on the phone or texting while driving, and researchers from India’s Anna University of Technology in Tamilnadu have now developed a new system that actually blocks mobile phone signals while an individual is driving. The trickier part has to do with taking away the driver’s ability to use a phone while still allowing mobile phone signals to be used by other passengers in the vehicle.

Some would argue that holding a phone or texting is the only thing that makes it so dangerous, but the Indian researchers point out that the conversations themselves also negatively affect drivers’ full attention on the road. The new system is able to determine whether or not the driver is using a phone while the vehicle is actually moving and then sets off a mobile jammer that blocks phone signals. Other passengers should still be able to use their phones since the jammer is low-range.

Countless laws have been put in places around the world that limit people from using their phones while driving. The researchers say that a system like this may also be able to one day be used to report traffic problems or illegal actions by transmitting a vehicle’s registration information to a traffic signal post where authorities could access them.
