Hasta La Gadget!

Here we are with yet another smartphone device from South Korean manufacturer Samsung, and we are talking about the expansion of their Galaxy range in the form of the Samsung GALAXY Chat. The name itself makes plenty of sense though – it was specially designed for socially-active users, and the Samsung Galaxy Chat is said to enable users to hook folks up with the rest of their family and friends in a jiffy. There is no word on pricing just yet, but it is said that the Samsung Galaxy Chat will arrive on the soil of Euro 2012 winners first, Spain, in July, followed by a rollout in Europe, Latin America, Middle East, China, Southeast Asia, and Southwest Asia. Chances are this will be a low-end or mid-range smartphone at best.

Touted to come in a sleek and compact form factor, the Samsung Galaxy Chat will run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, but do not expect it to have the Jelly Bean update anytime soon. Other hardware specifications include a 3″ touchscreen display complete with a full QWERTY keypad for you to send out those text messages, emails and Facebook status updates in a jiffy.

The Samsung Galaxy Chat ensures that your social life will remain fun and easy to manage. It will come with its own dedicated launch key on the handset, accompanied by Samsung’s ChatON communication service that will hook you up with users of ChatON on other platforms. This is more or less Samsung’s version of WhatsApp, where it offers spontaneous group chatting and messaging, never mind if it is text, animations or images that you intend to share. Email is a snap to handle and manage, courtesy of its predictive search capabilities, where there is also a more visual action bar that delivers seamless navigation. in addition to the ability to nest mail folders.

If you love mobile gaming, then the Samsung Galaxy Chat should also be your cup of tea, where it comes preloaded with Game Hub, which is pre-packed with the most popular social games for endless hours of entertainment, at least this is what Samsung claims. Any takers?

Does anyone out there remember Inspector Gadget? Where at the start of every episode, Inspector Gadget gets a note containing his next mission, the final line of each of these messages states that, “This message will self destruct in 5 seconds.“  Have you ever been in a situation where you only wished you could self destruct one of your e-mails, texts or an inappropriate picture or two? Phew! I have.

Well now you can, a new app called Wickr saw the need for folks to be able to keep tighter security on their communications. Wickr, encrypts your messages, kills, metadata, lets you remain anonymous, lets you decide who gets to see your stuff, and for just how long they get to see it for (from a mere second or two, to a several days) before your message self destructs, leaving no trace. Boy, I wish I had that a few late night e-mails ago.

As soon as your predetermined “viewing period” is over, the application will write over the nudie… I mean, sensitive visual images with random data. This makes the data unrecoverable, even using special computer forensics software, even by law enforcement officials, even by your soon to be ex-wife or, the IRS, and most especially, your drunken best friend on a Facebook posting frenzy.

So, if you like your privacy and your bothered by the idea that Big Brother might someday like to take a look-see at what you’ve been up to, then there’s a free version of Wickr available at Apple’s App Store, and (thankfully) an Android app on its way. A premium (paid) version of Wickr is being developed that allows you more precise user-controls, like being able to extend the time period before messages are deleted. Have you guys noticed QR codes turning up everywhere. Whats with these little suckers? They are on my groceries, newspapers, fast food packaging, they can be seen in shopping malls, on posters and on postcards. I guess we should have known it wouldn’t be long until someone started inking these codes onto their bodies.

I suppose QR tattoos are slightly interesting, and I guess if I had thought about it, I would have realized they were coming, but then I wondered if there could be some real usefulness here, could doctors someday scan our tags for medical histories in case of an emergency? or could we permanently be marked with our identification or blood type.
