Review: HiLO Lens and Grip Case for iPhone

About a year ago, we wrote about a Kickstarter project for an iPhone lens called the HiLO lens. The compact add-on lens allows you to snap photos at unusual angles that might otherwise require you to hold your device in an odd position. I’ve had the chance to play with one of these little lenses, and it’s pretty neat.

The machined aluminum accessory itself is about the size of the tip of your pinky finger, and can attach to the iPhone using either the included sticky pad, or better yet, attached to a minimal 3D printed plastic case, which provides easier removal and swiveling of the lens. The HiLO lens comes packaged in a nifty aluminum keychain holder for protection, which also has a tiny lens cloth inside to help you keep things clean.

hilo lens 3 620x416magnify

Inside the lens are four lens elements which turn your iDevice’s camera 90 degrees, as well as adding a wide-angle lens. This allows you to shoot images without the screen blocking your view of the subject. In addition, the ability to turn the lens to different positions lets you capture images at some really creative angles, while you still keep the screen straight. This lets you really see what your finished image will look like without having to your head to match the angle of your phone.

hilo lens 2 620x359magnify

When used with the included reusable 3M sticky pad, you can manually place the lens at any angle, but it’s a little tricky to align it just right. On the other hand, if you go with the case attachment, the lens is perfectly aligned, and it’s easy to swivel it. The only downside to this setup is having to remove and throw out the sticky pad, which leaves a bit of residue on the HiLo itself. Also, I did find that swiveling occasionally disconnect the lens from the case if I moved it without a firm grip on the phone.

One thing to keep in mind is that the images captured with the lens are upside-down and backwards, so you’ll need to use the free HiLO lens app to snap pictures without having to flip them in an image editor later. The app seems responsive and offers some neat controls for setting exposure and focus. However, it doesn’t have all the filters and whiz-bang features found in iOS 7′s native camera app nor some of the other photo apps out there. Not a huge deal, since pretty much every image editor allows you to flip and mirror images.

Here are a few unretouched sample images I captured with the HiLO and its companion app on my iPhone 5. Most frequently, I found that it was much more natural to use it to shoot items that were above or below my field of vision – like a pet lying on the floor, or an object that I wanted to get an angled shot from below. I can imagine how handy it would be for capturing images of tall buildings and statues.

The HiLO lens is currently selling for the introductory price of $69.95(USD), and is compatible with the iPhone 4,4S,5,5C and 5S. Trust me when I say you’ll want to spend the extra $9.95 on the HiLO X Grip case, which not only provides an easily adjustable mount, but gives your phone a little extra grip surface without covering up Apple’s industrial design.

Crowdsourced Reward Offered for Open Source iOS 7 Jailbreak: Codestarter

A small group of DMCA activists and device accessibility advocates are raising funds to reward anyone who comes up with an free, open source and untethered iOS 7 jailbreak. In case you’re not familiar with the term, jailbreaking iOS devices opens it up to software modifications that Apple would never officially allow. They can be as big as file managers, new gesture commands and even shortcut settings (which Apple clearly copied in iOS 7).

The prize was the idea of Chris Maury, an entrepreneur who believes that iOS devices will be more useful to disabled people if combined with jailbreak apps. The other proponents of the fundraiser are Boing Boing editor and author Cory Doctorow, iFixit co-founder and CEO Kyle Wiens and professor and author Biella Coleman.  Head to the fundraiser’s website if you want to donate or check out the criteria for submissions.

AUUG Motion Synth Turns iDevices into Dedicated Musical Instruments

If you’re looking to make music with your iPhone or iPod Touch, check out this add-on, which looks pretty neat. The AUUG Motion Synth is a combination grip/case for your iDevice, which lets you use your hand and motion to play music.

It’s supposed to let you make your music more naturally than with a touchscreen by itself, adding tactile edges for each of its on-screen controls so you don’t have to look at the screen while playing, and allowing single-handed play.

When used with its companion app, it will transform your device into an eight-button synthesizer. The instrument is controlled via the app’s keys as well as the motion of your hand. You can change pitch and tone this way, and the buttons will play notes.

The AUUG app isn’t a synthesizer itself, but it can be used to control other iOS audio apps like Garage Band. You can also control external synth hardware as well. Here’s a look at AUUG being used to control Ableton Live, by sending MIDI data over Wi-Fi.

The device is being funded via Kickstarter. You can get one if you pledge at least $68(USD) by December 19th.

Rose Gold Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Smartphones Get Official

Earlier this morning some images and details of a rose gold Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone surfaced via the Samsung Argentina website. Those product listings were then removed from the site. The official press release for the new rose gold and red smartphones has now surfaced.

gold note 3 620x483magnify

Samsung has confirmed that in addition to the existing black, white, and pink Galaxy Note 3 smartphones, two new gold versions and a merlot red unit are coming. The gold versions include rose gold with white or black accents. The forthcoming Merlot red version is a dark red color, but not quite maroon.

Other than being offered with new colors on the outside, the rose gold and merlot smartphones are the same as the earlier versions. Samsung says that the rose gold Galaxy Note 3 smartphones will match exactly with the rose gold Galaxy Gear smartwatch for those who like to coordinate their fashions.

“At Samsung Mobile, we understand that consumers view their mobile devices as an extension of their personal style, and Samsung is committed to delivering fresh ways for consumers to express themselves,” said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, IT & Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics. “By introducing these new editions of Galaxy Note 3, we want to provide our fashion-forward consumers with more ways to express their personality and tastes through our technology.”

Write and Share Five-Sentence Stories with Spine

You might not be able to write for a living for one reason or another, even if you wanted to, but that doesn’t mean you should stop writing. Let off some steam, talk about your dreams, share funny anecdotes – there are so many things you can do with words.

They don’t have to be extremely long. In fact, there’s an app that lets you write short blurbs and share them with friends and random people when you’re done with them. That app is called Spine.

Spine App 620x422magnify

It’s a neat little app that lets aspiring writers publish five-sentence stories. You can basically consider Spine as a social network for micro-stories where authors and readers can connect and share stories with one another.

Users can post and browse stories in nine different categories, which includes literary staples like action, horror, sci-fi, and mystery.

Users can rate stories and share the ones they love to others on their networks. In short, it’s a community of writers and readers doing something they love: reading and writing.

Spine is available free for iOS devices and can be downloaded here.

R2-D2 Car Charger: A Droid with the Power of the Force

Every pilot needs a faithful companion. Even if you’re just driving a 1990 Geo Metro, it’s good to have a personal droid on board, just in case you get into trouble. R2-D2 is up to the challenge – plus he’ll charge your gadgets while he keeps you company.

r2 d2 car charger 1 620x413magnify

This portable R2-D2 USB charger sits in your cup holder, and plugs into your car’s 12 volt outlet to charge up two smartphones or tablets at the same time, thanks to a pair of 2.1 amp USB ports.

But like any good maintenance droid, this R2 unit doesn’t just sit there, no. When you start to juice up your gadgets, his dome turns, lights up and he lets forth a series of beeps and bleeps. Now if only we had 3PO around to translate for us.

This is most definitely the droid you were looking for. Head on over to ThinkGeek right now, and plunk down your $49.99 (USD) if you want one in time for the holidays.

Classic SEGA Consoles Show up on iPhone Cases, Chargers and Bluetooth Speakers

While I prefer to carry playable SEGA Genesis games in my pocket, I suppose the next best thing is to carry a bag full of gadgets that look like SEGA consoles, right? Thanks to this new line of mobile gadget accessories you can.

sega genesis phone case 1 620x667magnify

Tommo Mobile recently unveiled a line of iPhone cases which look like the Sega Genesis, Mega Drive, Saturn and Game Gear (where’s my beloved Dreamcast?) In addition to the console cases, they’re offering a couple that look like the Genesis and Mega Drive controllers too. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but these aren’t just flat skins, they’re actually contoured to replicate the dimensionality of the systems they’re based on.

sega genesis phone case 2 620x322magnify

Each case fits the iPhone 5 or 5S and includes a SEGA-themed screen protector as well. They’re also offering up a couple of powerful battery chargers with SEGA themes, including Genesis and Saturn designs. Each one offers a large 9000mAh battery, which should provide plenty of juice for your mobile devices.

genesis power partner 620x561magnify

Last, but not least, there’s the SEGA Genesis Bluetooth speakers, which offer stereo sound and a look that yet again complements the Genesis console. It’s too bad that the original Genesis doesn’t have Bluetooth wireless audio.

All of the SEGA mobile accessories should be available by the end of the year. The iPhone cases sell for $24.99(USD), while the Power Partner batteries go for $69.99 and the Bluetooth speaker is $89.99. Keep an eye out on Amazon to pre-order.
