Most PS4 Games will Support Remote Play via PS Vita: FINALLY.

If you drooled at the PS Vita hack we saw last year that allowed for Remote Play via PS3, check this out. Sony may have found a solution to the PS Vita’s languishing hardware sales and intrigued more Sony faithful in one fell swoop. The company has acknowledged that they will require PS4 games to support Remote Play, with some exceptions. In other words, you’ll be able to stream most PS4 games from the console and play them on the PS Vita.

The feature was confirmed via Twitter by Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios. When asked if PS4 games will use the Remote Play feature, Yoshida responded, “Yes, it’s true unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera. It will be great to play PS4 games on PS Vita.”

This is awesome news. It’s so awesome that you have to wonder why Sony didn’t boast about it more during the announcement of the PlayStation 4. I’m pretty sure they mentioned it in passing, but remember, Nintendo boasted about this exact same feature on the Wii U, and rightfully so. Obviously PS4 gamers will have to buy a PS Vita to enjoy Remote Play, and the Vita’s rear touchscreen can’t fully make up for the lack of R2 and L2 buttons. But still, this is a blessing for gamers who have to share their TV or don’t have enough space for a TV in their room.

If this takes off and more people buy the PS Vita, perhaps that will help push more publishers to release games on the handheld. I’m not entirely sold on this feature; we obviously haven’t seen it in action, we don’t know how the PS Vita’s battery will hold up with Remote Play, etc. But it’s one that I personally have been hoping for ever since the PS Vita was released, so I guess we’ll just have to be hopeful and wait until its big brother comes out this Holiday.

Pistol iPhone 5 Case Offers Plenty of Bang for Your Buck

I’ve seen some weird iPhone cases over the years, but with the exception of the knucklecase, most of them would be fine going through the security checkpoint at an airport. Not so with this case.

iphone gun case 1

Yes, this ridiculous thing is an iPhone case that approximates a full-size pistol. Just about everything about this thing is impractical. Not only could you not carry it around with you without risk of being constantly harassed (or shot) by law enforcement, but I certainly don’t have any pockets in my pants this thing would fit into.

This is one of those things that I recommend you appreciate (or laugh at) from afar, but if you must have one, it’s about $16(USD) over at DealExtreme.

iHeart Locket Isn’t the Key to Anyone’s Heart, But It’s the Key to an iPad Diary App

Remember when you were a kid and you had this secret diary that your little brother would always try to sneak a peek at? Well, probably only the girls can relate, and while I had no brother, I did have a sister who constantly snooped around my stuff.

So if you have a little girl in the house and want to save her the trouble of having to fight for her privacy, you might want to get her the iHeart Locket. That’s if she already has an iPad.

ilocket digital locket 1

The iHeart works in conjunction with the iHeart Locket Diary app for iOS. The app is essentially a digital diary that lets your little girl write her deepest thoughts and secrets. The app also lets her insert images and scribble down notes and doodles when she feels like it.

iheart locket 2

The locket functions as the diary’s key. It transmits a unique code that keeps the diary private, so only its wearer can read the diary. In addition, if anyone comes along, a button on the locket can be pressed and anything written on the screen will be kept hidden away from prying eyes.

The iHeart Locket is being sold for $24.95(USD), while the app can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store.

Fairphone: Above Average Phone, Above Average Values

It’s no secret that some, if not most of the objects we buy were made under less than ideal conditions. The gadgets that we lust for may not have been made without oppressive labor conditions, irresponsible processing of natural resources and other immoral practices. One company wants to make a difference by making what they call the Fairphone, a “conflict-free” Android smartphone.

fairphone android smartphone

In terms of hardware and software, the Fairphone is not that impressive. It will run on Android 4.2 aka Jelly Bean and will have a 4.3″ 960×540 touchscreen, 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, 8mp rear camera, 1.3mp front camera and a 2,000mAh battery. Not bad, but the company behind it wants us to support it mainly because of its transparent and fair manufacturing process. The company aims to ensure that the employees involved in making the Fairphone are treated fairly and that the resources used in making the phone are gathered and processed in responsible means.

fairphone android smartphone 2

The Fairphone itself will supposedly embody these people- and environment-friendly principles as well. For instance, its battery is user-replaceable and its operating system will be rootable out of the box. If the Fairphone takes off, the company says they will strive to create a smartphone that is completely recyclable.

You can pre-order the Fairphone for €325 (~$420 USD) at its official website. Their target is to reach 5,000 orders before going into production. As of this writing they already have 2,174 orders. Of course, the goals and dreams behind the Fairphone won’t be realized overnight, but I really do hope they succeed.

They should make a more informative website or a documentary that shows concrete examples of what they’re doing. If they’re the real deal, I’d be happy to donate money for such a cause even I get nothing in return. I’m sure I’m not alone.

PhotoPills Plans Photo Shoots So You Won’t Always Be Chasing the Light

I once saw a photographer scramble around to finish the shoot as the Sun began to set. Needless to say, everyone had to come back the next day because the natural lighting just wasn’t enough and the photos turned out pretty bad.

Note that this is a mistake many photographers make when they schedule a shoot: they forget to consider the time the Sun rises or sets, in effect leaving the lighting for the shoot up to chance. If you’re an aspiring photographer, then PhotoPill is an app that you should consider getting.

PhotoPills

PhotoPills is basically a photo shoot planner that lets users create to-do lists of compositions so they won’t forget anything in the midst of a shoot. The most important features are perhaps the 3D augmented reality tools that can predict celestial paths and the calculators for time-lapse, long exposure, and depth-of-field calculations.

PhotoPills1

Rafael Pons, who helped come up with the app, explains: “You just have to decide where you want the sun or moon to be and tap the search button to get all possible dates it happens.”

While the app does help you with planning shoots, it doesn’t help you with your technique or teach you about how to make the most out of available lighting, especially when you’re shooting on location. For the lucky few, it’s natural talent – but oftentimes, it’s acquired through hard work and by taking courses and attending workshops at photography schools. It might seem like a lot of work, but your efforts will pay off with the results that you’ll get.

PhotoPills might sound like a complicated app to use, but the developer has released a series of tutorial videos to help everyone out. The app is available for $9.99(USD) on the iTunes App Store.

Elecom Scented Touchscreen Cleaners: Ain’t Nobody as Nerdy, My Screen So Fresh So Clean

I’m okay with using a microfiber cloth to clean the display on my gadgets and my computer. But if your nose is sensitive enough that it can smell the oil, dirt and whatever substance is left on your screen, watch out for Elecom’s new touchscreen cleaners. Aside from containing germ-killing ethanol and dirt-scrubbing surfactant, they also have various fragrances.

The scented cleaners are sold in either small spray-on bottles or equally tiny wet microfiber cloths. But even if you get the spray-on cleaner, Elecom recommends that you spray them on a piece of clean cloth first then apply the cloth to your gadget’s screen instead of spraying the cleaner on your screen directly. Probably because some of the liquid might find its way inside your gadget.

Elecom will make the cleaners available in Japan starting this month. The tissue will sell for ¥640 (~$6  USD) for a pack of 5 tissues while a 7ml bottle of the liquid cleaner will go for ¥1,323 (~$13). If that sounds too expensive to you, there are lots of guides online about mixing your own screen cleaning solution. Maybe you can add a fragrance to those recipes. Or the scent of a new computer. Or booger bits. Whatever floats your boat.

Cat Scratching Post Smartphone Stand Is a Real Head-Scratcher

We know that cats like to play with iPads, but it turns out they also like iPhones. While these tiny cats may look like they’re scratching up the back of your smartphone, they really are there to help it stand up.

I really don’t know what else to say about this except… Japan.

Lumigrids LEDs Map Bicycle Terrain: Pilot Your Bike Like a Fighter Plane!

If there’s something that you need to be careful with, it’s definitely your bike when you’re riding late at night. I’ve had one accident where I woke up in the hospital, and I was on a cycling path! Needless to say, good lights are paramount to keeping you riding safely in the dark.

lumigrids led lights bicycle

Lumigrids is a concept LED projector for bikes that aims to improve night rides. The device would project a square grid onto to the ground, allowing riders to see the terrain ahead, akin to what some jet fighters use(d). The concept calls for the LEDs drawing power from an internal battery or the rotation of the bike’s wheels, like a dynamo of some sort.

On rough surfaces, the grid will deform, allowing riders to adjust their bikes accordingly. The design won the team from the Sichuan University which developed it a Red Dot award.

It’s unclear what’s next for Lumigrids, but the technology to pull off such a feat is readily available (Microsoft Kinect, Picoprojectors), so hopefully we’ll see something like this go into production sooner rather than later.

Ultimate Ears EU Boom Bluetooth Speaker Tries to Stand out from the Crowd

I’ve become a convert of Bluetooth speakers, because of their usefulness and their multiple functions. Granted, I probably wouldn’t have bought myself one the first time out, but after reviewing a demo unit, I was sold on the concept. Streaming media from your mobile devices is just so easy. In the beginning, there were just a few. Now the market at the point of oversaturation. This speaker aims to stand out from the crowd with its durability, good looks, and stereo capability.

The UE Boom from Logitech’s Ultimate Ears boasts impressive sound and unlike other speakers, it’s supposed to be life-proof, thanks to a “plasma coating”. I honestly don’t know what that is. In my experience, a plasma is a superheated ionized gas. Regardless, the cylindrical speaker is dirt, dust, and IPX4 water-resistant, which should protect it from splashes and the occasional rainstorm.

As with most Bluetooth speakers, wireless range is about 50 feet, and is also compatible with NFC-enabled devices for instant pairing. It’s got two 1.5″ full range drivers, and two 2″ passive radiators, and also works as a speakerphone. The speakers have a battery life of about 15 hours and can connect to other EU Booms for a new stereo sound spectacular. The UE Boom speaker sells for $199.99(USD) and is available in a variety of colors.

Mobile Trouser Press: Iron Boy

Have you ever been embarassed at a meeting or a party because your clothes got wrinkled on the way? First of all, you’re going to the wrong parties. The best ones don’t require you to be clothed. Second, if you don’t want that to happen again, this portable clothes iron could straighten things out for you.

mobile trouser press

Google’s translation of this gadget’s Japanese name is Mobile Trouser Press, but of course you can use it on all sorts of clothing. It can heat to 95ºC in just 1-3 minutes and runs on either three AA batteries or via USB. As you can see in the pictures, its heating elements are inside a clip-like mechanism. This means its suited for ironing pleats or collars. If your entire shirt is a wrinkled mess, you’ll need a proper iron to deal with it.

Japanese online store eSupply sells the portable clothes iron for ¥980 (~$10 USD). Good thing we don’t have a dress code here. I don’t have anything worth ironing.
