Bacon Alarm Clock Is the Best Thing Oscar Mayer Has Ever Done (Besides that Song)

My alarm clock has a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R… my alarm clock has a second name, it’s M-A-Y-E-R. You will surely recognize the name Oscar Mayer as the company that makes more lunch and breakfast meats than you can shake a stick at. The company also makes bacon, which is the best food in the history of food.

Oscar Mayer has a new hardware and app combo for the iPhone that will wake you to the sounds and smell of frying bacon.

It’s not going to make you bacon like the Bacon Alarm Clock we talked about before. Instead, the Oscar Mayer app uses a cartridge that attaches to the bottom of the iPhone and produces the scent of bacon to wake you up. I’m not sure how I feel about that tease. The other issue is that you can’t just buy this thing. A limited number of them are being given away to people who take a quiz on the Oscan Mayer website. Those who win the dongle and app combo will get an extra vial of bacon scent. I guess once you run out of scent, you can’t get refills short of squeezing your own bacon juice.

We really love bacon around my house. I have spread that love for bacon to my kids too. My daughter even used crispy crunchy bacon to illustrate her food chain quiz recently in school. She is a genius.

CruxEncore Case Turns iPad Air into a Notebook

There are bunches of cases out there for the iPad that add a physical keyboard to make it more efficient to use when typing a lot. A new case has turned up on Kickstarter that turns the iPad Air into a laptop.

The CruxEncore case is designed to leave the camera and all controls of the tablet open and accessible. The case also leaves the speakers uncovered so the sound for videos and movies isn’t blocked. It’s got a durable hinge mechanism which allows you to adjust the iPad Air to any angle, without worrying about the display flopping over on itself.

It’s made from sturdy aircraft grade 6063 aluminum and polycarbonate. The aluminum is then anodized in multiple colors including silver, black, and white.

Power for the Bluetooth 4.0 keyboard comes from a 360 mAh battery that is good for a month of use per charge. The keys are raised and are claimed to mimic the typing feel on a MacBook. A pledge of $89(USD) or more will get you one of the cases with shipping estimated in May 2014.

Boeing Black Smartphone Bricks Itself When Tampered with

Boeing (yes, that same Boeing that makes airplanes) is currently working on a smartphone called “Black” that can reportedly self-destruct when it senses that it’s being tampered with.

boeing black phone 620x485magnify

It’s especially made for government agencies and their agents. Boeing’s emphasis in designing Black is security, with the goal of ensuring that sensitive information and data stay private or secure, even when the phone changes hands (or is stolen.) Apparently, the phone can also be set to automatically “brick” itself in the event that it falls into the wrong hands. Adding to security, it can transmit on private satellite channels.

Boeing’s tamper-proof phone is aimed at government agencies and contractors who need to keep communication and data secure. Made in the United States, the phone runs on Google Inc’s Android operating system. The 5.2-by-2.7-inch handset, slightly larger than an iPhone, uses dual SIM cards to enable it to access multiple cell networks instead of a single network like a normal cellphone.

The device’s hardware roots of trust and trusted boot ensure the device starts in a trusted state, enabling maximum security of data. Hardware media encryption and configurable inhibit controls are embedded to protect the device, its data, and the transmission of information, significantly reducing the risk of mission compromise due to data loss.

Yoshi Themed Nintendo 3DS XL Is Coming, Game Sold Separately

As everyone knows by now, Nintendo needs to sell anything they can since the Wii U has sold so terribly for them. So to get more sales in general, and to promote the release of Yoshi’s New Island, Nintendo is releasing a new, special edition Yoshi-branded Nintendo 3DS XL.

However, the special-edition portable doesn’t come with the game, even though the box is so heavily branded with Yoshi artwork. No, they want you to buy both the game and the 3DS separately.

Yoshi’s New Island releases the same day as the lime green 3DS XL. March 14. The special edition 3DS XL retails for $199(USD) price and there doesn’t seem to be an alternate option that comes bundled with the game. Smooth move, Nintendo.

Please buy the game and the console. Help a struggling gaming company who has made all of the wrong moves for years. Have a heart. Keep mild cartoon violence alive in video games. Otherwise they might have a telethon soon or one of those sad animal commercials with Sarah Mclachlan. Or maybe they’ll just smarten up and start selling their games on iOS and Android – when dinosaurs fly.

Square Pickup Lets You Order Food to Go Without Calling in

I’m sure that you have been sitting in the office or at home, at some point and decided to order up some take out for lunch. The problem with many eateries at lunch time is that they are so busy you end up waiting forever for someone to pick up the phone, only to be greeted by a harried worker that often messes up your order. That’s where Square Pickup comes in.

Square Pickup is an app that is currently in development for iOS and Android devices. The app allows any restaurant that participates in Square payments to enable their entire menu to be ordered and paid for directly from the app. The upside for the restaurant is that no one has to take an order. The upside for the person ordering is that they can choose what they want and pay without having to wait for someone to pick up the phone. The orderer also doesn’t have to wait to checkout since they pay with the app, all they need to do is get their bag and walk out.

There are other services out there that offer similar capabilities – like GrubHub – but so many restaurants are already using Square for payments now that this could be a good alternative.

The app is currently in a limited preview mode, so you’ll have to wait before you can use it unless you’re fortunate enough to have received an invitation code.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date and Specs Announced

Samsung today took wraps off it’s hotly-anticipated Galaxy S5 smartphone. But instead of focusing on software bells and whistles, the company says the phone is all about the things consumers want most – fast network connectivity, a great screen and camera, and durability.

samsung galaxy s5 620x658magnify

Compared with the S4, the Galaxy S5 will offer a slightly larger 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, and will be powered by a 2.5 GHz Quad Core CPU, running Android 4.4.2 (Kitkat). The phone’s battery has been stepped up from 2600mAh to 2800mAh, and there’s even a “super power save” mode which will drop the display down to black and white and turn off various features when you want to get the most possible life. Its also had both cameras upgraded – the front camera is now 2.1MP, while the rear is 16MP. Autofocus time has also been improved to as little as 0.3 seconds. Also, according to its spec sheet, it can capture UHD video at 30fps. We’re assuming this means 4K.

The Galaxy S5 supports 802.11ac and 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi connectivity, and a new feature called “Download Booster” which can combine data transmission over LTE and Wi-Fi simultaneously for greater throughput (though this will eat up data on your data plan when activated). It’s also got an upgraded fitness package called S Health 3.0, which includes tools like a pedometer, diet and exercise tracking and even a built-in heart rate monitor.

The design of the new phone is definitely more refined than the prior model in my opinion, and has a textured pattern on the back of its case to not only give it a better grip, but to make it more distinctive than past models. You can choose from a variety of colors, including black, white, blue and copper-gold to start.

Perhaps the best new feature of the Galaxy S5 isn’t its design or under the hood, it’s the fact that it’s now IP67 dust and water resistant – which should make it much harder to damage the phone. Though it’s still not fully waterproof, like the underwater-friendly Sony Xperia ZR.

Samsung hasn’t yet revealed pricing for the Galaxy S5, but has said the phone will be available this April 11, in both a 16GB and 32GB versions. For now, there’s no plan to release a 64GB model, though the phone’s microSD slot can add up to 64GB of additional storage.

Nokia XL Dual SIM Smartphone Aims at Budget Shoppers

The smartphones that we think are affordable here in the US, are often way out of reach for people in developing nations. Many of these places don’t get subsidies, so they have to pay the entire amount for their smartphones up front. Nokia has unveiled a new smartphone at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona that is aimed directly at the developing world, but will come to Europe as well.

The smartphone is called the Nokia XL Dual SIM and as the name implies it has dual SIM card slots. Despite Nokia now being owned by Microsoft, the phone runs the Android OS.

The smartphone is 10.9mm thick and has a 5-inch screen. The screen offers wide viewing angles and tactile feedback. It has a resolution of 800 x 480 and supports 24-bit color. The rear camera is a 5MP autofocus unit. The processor under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, and the phone offers Bluetooth 3.0, and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi conectivity.

It works on 2G and 3G networks. The Nokia XL has 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It also supports MicroSD cards for storage expansion. The phone will roll out in Q2 2014 for €109 (~$150 USD). The company also introduced the Nokia X and X+ phones, which are even more budget conscious, but have smaller screens, a lower resolution camera and the X also having less RAM.

Nokia Treasure Tags Keep Track of Your Stuff

Nokia has rolled out a new product that will launch in April called Treasure Tag. The Nokia Treasure Tag is a small square device that is designed to be attached to your belongings to help you keep track of them. This might be the perfect thing for those that tend to lose their keys or bag all the time.

nokia treasure tag 1 620x484magnify

When you walk away with your smartphone and leave your keys on the counter, the Treasure Tags will produce an audible tone. If you take the keys and leave the smartphone, the alarm will sound. The idea is that the sound will remind you to grab up all your belongings and help you find them.

nokia treasure tag 2 620x484magnify

The tags sync via NFC and Bluetooth to your mobile device. The Treasure Tag is 30 x 30 x 10mm, making it about half the size of a matchbox. Each one weighs just 13 grams, so you won’t even notice it inside your bag or on your keys. Battery life for each Treasure Tag is about six months, and they can be replaced with an inexpensive CR-2032 coin cell battery.

Out of the box, the Treasure Tag integrates with Nokia phones running Windows Phone for the OS. The tags will also be supported via a third-party app for iPhone and Android users. The apps will support up to four tags at once and each tag will cost about $30(USD).

Google Project Tango Smartphone Lets You Make 3D Maps: DIY Street View

Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) recently unveiled Project Tango, a smartphone that lets users make 3D models of their surroundings. ATAP is also working on development APIs that will let developers use those 3D models in apps.

The current Project Tango prototype is a 5″ phone with a 4 megapixel camera, a depth sensor, a motion tracking camera and two “computer vision processors.”

The sensors supposedly take about 250,000 measurements per second, which the phone processes into a 3D model in real time.

You’re not going to let the Google Street View crew into your house, but a harmless little smartphone? Come to my pocket and my life! The NSA wants a pendant-sized version of this thing yesterday.
