Trygger Camera Clip Aims to Improve iPhone Photos in a Snap

Smartphones make reasonably adequate cameras, especially if all you want is to capture some photos of your family and daily life. However, one thing that iPhonetographers will quickly find limiting are the optics included in their cameras. There’s not much you can do about improving them, unless you use some sort of add-on lens or filter.

After having made a pretty useful lens filter case, which was also successfully funded through Kickstarter, Trygger is back with a clip-on filter for your iPhone 5. Unlike their previous design, this camera clip is pretty small and can easily be removed and carried in your pocket. It’s designed to help balancing out colors and improve overall image fidelity using an adjustable polarizing filter. Here are some example images with and without the filter in place (left image is the stock iPhone, the right is with the Trygger).

The image on the right definitely exhibits fewer blown-out areas, and is more pleasing to the eye. In addition to improving color and hotspots, the lens filter can all but eliminate unwanted glare off of reflective surfaces. The result is pretty impressive from the looks of this example:

The Trygger camera clip was launched as a Kickstarter crowdfunding project, and they’ve currently amassed about $2,000 out of a $10,000 goal, with about a month to go to reach their funding goal. You’ll have to pledge $30(USD) to get yours.

Instagram Class-Action Lawsuit Demands Right to File Class-Action Lawsuits

Yowza, it hasn’t been the best month for Instagram. After changing their terms of service to allow them to use images for advertising purposes – and facing a huge backlash by its users, Instagram came back and redacted the changes. Apparently, this didn’t placate everyone. It actually doesn’t surprise me, ever since Instagram was bought by Facebook, I’ve been expecting this kind of upheaval.

Now, Instagram is facing a class-action lawsuit, which was filed by the San Diego-based law firm Finkelstein & Krinsk. Instagram user Lucy Funes, on behalf of all others against Instagram, claimed a breach of contract and other claims. The claims say that Instagram is also attempting to cover its tail by prohibiting users from seeking legal injunction against the service, adding a mandatory arbitration clause, and a $100 limitation of liability. In addition, they are demanding that users be allowed to export images should they decide to leave the service – something not currently permitted.

Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes simply responded to the lawsuit as follows: “We believe this complaint is without merit and we will fight it vigorously.”

Needless to say that this project will be fully funded. You’ll have to pledge $80(USD) to get yours, and you can choose from a blue, green or black version for that price. Iron Throne Smartphone Dock: Game of Phones

Whether you’re a fan of the Game of Thrones TV series or the A Song of Fire and Ice novels or you’re just willing to admit that your smartphone rules over your time and attention, you’ll love this dock made by Instructables member mstyle183.

mstyle183 – for this is the manner in which the kingdom’s future blacksmiths are named – originally made the dock for himself, but rightly decided that other people might want one. Whereas he made the original using 3D printing, the docks he’s selling are made via injection molding. Each order is individually painted, though I kind of like its vanilla look.

You can order the dock from mstyle183′s website nuPROTO for $70 (USD). It’s compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5 and phones that have micro-USB charging ports at the bottom. Although I’m not sure if fatter phones like the Galaxy Note are fit to sit on this throne.

Facebook Poke Mobile: This Message Will Self-Destruct in 5 Seconds

It seems there is always someone Poking you on Facebook. To be honest, I’ve never replied to Pokes since they’re pretty silly, but Facebook has recently launched a new mobile app that will take things beyond the usual Poke.

facebook poke

Facebook Poke allows users to alert to their Facebook friends, sending quick, disposable messages, photos or video in order to share them without posting them to your timeline.

Pokes are set to self-destruct, lasting for 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds after viewing. Basically, if you use it to send racy pictures to your boyfriend/girlfriend, knowing that they will be erased fairly quickly. In addition, Facebook says they are wiping out all of the Pokes encryption keys 2 days after viewing the message, so they can’t be recovered. Then again, you never know what Facebook will do with them. Ultimately, don’t they need to monetize them? After all, they do have shareholders these days.

iOS users can grab Facebook Poke on the App Store now. There’s no word on an Android version as of yet.

Lowdi Bluetooth Speaker: Small, but Loud(e?)

There are plenty of Bluetooth speakers available these days, and here’s another one you might want to check out if you still haven’t found one you like. This latest one was designed in France, and is called the Lowdi.

lowdi bluetooth speaker

The minimally-styled Lowdi is a Bluetooth 4.0 mobile speaker, with 3 watts of power. It can produce sound up to 80 dB measured at 0.5m, which isn’t bad. You can recharge the device via USB and its autonomy is 8 hours. Like other speakers, the 3.5mm input allows you to plug in other audio sources which don’t support Bluetooth. The Lowdi also has a mic so it can receive phone calls as well. Another nice touch is the rubber bumper around the exterior of the case, which resists scratches.

The Lowdi Bluetooth speaker sells for for €99 (~$132 USD), including a carrying pouch, USB charging cable and 3.5mm audio cable.

DIY Doctor Who TARDIS Model Actually Made Bigger on the Inside

Next to its modest exterior, the second most notable thing about the time and space machine in Doctor Who is that it’s way bigger on the inside. It’s relatively easy to make a model or even a life-sized replica of its facade, but a clever fellow has managed to make a tiny TARDIS that looks bigger on the inside.

tardis augmented reality replica by greg kumparak

The replica was made by writer/DW fan/clever fellow Greg Kumparak. Initially he just wanted to make a small model of the TARDIS out of wood. After adding a working light on its roof, Greg thought he was really done with the project when an idea came to him: add an interior. Which is why he ended up not making an interior – at least, not a real one. I don’t want to spoil Greg’s neat handiwork, so just watch the video below to see what he did.

Teleport to Greg’s website for more details about his cool project.

WhatsApp Messenger: Now Free for iOS

WhatsApp is arguably one of the most popular cross-platform messenger apps available out there. Though until now, WhatsApp hasn’t been free on iOS. You had to shell out $0.99 to get it on your iPhone. Well, for a limited time, WhatsApp is free.

whatsapp free

Other platforms could use WhatsApp for free, but for some reason iOS users had to pay up. This change will probably make many users download it, and it will boost the users of the service, which isn’t a bad thing. I wonder how the WhatsApp network will handle the additional load, though.

There are many other messengers, like Viber, Kik, Line, and more that are also free. These days, when you’re in range of a Wi-Fi network, you can definitely save money compared to your carrier’s messaging services, since these sort of messengers replace text and voice messaging very efficiently.
