JimmyCASE Wood iPhone/Samsung Galaxy S4 Case Doubles as a Wallet

If you’re in the market for a smartphone case and looking for something a bit different than all of the others out there, you might want to check out the JimmyCASE.

The JimmyCASE offers the stylish looks of a wooden case, but also the practicality of a wallet case. The case combines a silicone bumper with a genuine mahogany backing to protect your phone. Wrapped over the wood back is a stretchy piece of custom-designed elastic which can hold credit cards and money.

In my experience, I was able to stack my license and three credit cards, as well as a few dollar bills under the elastic without a problem, and with even a single credit card, it held securely. And even with the wallet loaded up, the iPhone’s camera and flash are completely unencumbered.

The sides of the case offer a nice textured grip to them, and there are openings for the charging port, speakers, headphone jack, microphone, and mute switch. Volume and power controls are hidden beneath silicone, which keeps stuff from getting into them, but still providing enough tactile feel to be usable.

Of course, the JimmyCASE is about style too, so you can choose from four different elastic fabrics at this point, including the navy blue and black striped of my review unit, gray/orange, navy/orange, and a preppy kind of pink with colorful stripes. In addition to the iPhone 5/5S variant, it’s can be had in iPhone 4, iPhone 5C and Samsung Galaxy S4 models.

The JimmyCASE is available for order now, and sells for $39(USD).

iPhone 5/5S Case Made from Real Chocolate: Chocolate Covered Apple

You’ve probably seen iPhone cases shaped like chocolate bars. These on the other hand, are chocolate bars shaped like an iPhone case.

They are made by two Portland-based companies. Woodblock Chocolate supplied the bars of dark chocolate and iPhone and iPad accessory maker Grove machined the bars into cases. I know the Internet wants to get its hands on anything absurd, but the two companies have more sense than that and won’t be selling the tasty, but highly impractical cases.

Dash Wireless Headphones, Music Player, Headset & Fitness Tracker: Smart ‘phones

Wearable technology is still at a very early stage, but we’re seeing more refined and truly useful examples every so often. Bragi’s Dash is the latest example. Calling this tiny pair of devices “headphones” is as fair as calling the iPhone a “phone.”

Yes, Dash is a pair of Bluetooth in-ear headphones. But it’s also a music player on its own, with 4GB of built-in storage for MP3 and AAC files. It also provides noise isolation, which can be adjusted if you want to listen in on your surroundings. Dash also has a microphone and can be used as a headset. But that’s not all.

Dash is also a fitness tracker. Together with its iOS app, it lets you keep an eye on things like your heart rate, calories burned and body temperature. The app also has a convenient Lost Device Tracker, which I’m sure future owners will eventually need.

It will also keep tabs on performance-related stats like the steps you’ve taken, your speed and even your altitude and drop rate.

While you’ll get the most out of Dash if you use its companion app, you’ll be able to control the device through its touch-sensitive surface.

Dash is also shock- and water-resistant, and it lasts up to 4 hours per charge.

Pledge at least $199 (USD) on Kickstarter by March 31 to get Dash as a reward. That’s not cheap, but assuming it can do all of its functions well then it’s a much better deal than most if not all of the fitness trackers that are currently available.

‘Wingman’ App Gives You a Shot at Joining the Mile-High Club

What do you do to pass the time when you’re on a 16-hour flight? Most people sleep, while others read books or magazines. Some watch movies or TV shows, and there are those who spend their time chatting up the passenger beside them or trying to make eye contact with someone a few aisles down.

For the latter group, there’s Wingman.

It’s an app that’s currently in development. It was thought up by BuzzFeed copywriter Gabe Whaley, who explains what inspired him to create the app: “I’m pretty sure that at some point, anyone who’s flown has had a thought, like, ‘I wonder what it would be like to talk to that person. Too bad it’s never going to happen, because the seating arrangement didn’t provide for that.’ And of course, most people have at least some sort of exposure to what the mile high club is.”

The software is designed to work via Bluetooth in case Wi-Fi isn’t available on board your airplane. You can stay in the loop and sign up to receive updated on their website.

Ototo Musical Invention Kit Scales with Your Imagination

It may not look like much, but Dentaku’s tiny board lets you follow in the footsteps of Leo Fender, Antonio Stradivari, Ikutaro Kakehashi and other musical instrument makers. It’s called the Ototo, and it’s a small synthesizer that can be activated by any conductive material and tweaked by a variety of inputs.

ototo musical invention kit 620x413magnify

The Ototo is a lot like the MaKey MaKey, except it specializes in making music. It has 12 capacitive touch keys that you can activate with your fingers or any other conductive material. It also has four inputs for its sensors. One input modifies the volume, one changes the pitch and the other two sensors tweak the “texture” of the synth. At launch, Dentaku will offer seven types of sensors. There’s a knob, a slider, a joystick, a force-sensitive button, a touch-sensitive strip, a light sensor and a breath sensor.

Augmenting the synth with one or more sensors lets you make a variety of instruments, from a cardboard saxophone to a drum made of human heads. I mean live human heads. I mean living human drums. With their heads still attached – you know what I mean. Don’t kill people.

Ototo is powered by two AA batteries or via micro-USB. Speaking of which, you can also use the synthesizer as a MIDI controller over USB.

Jam with your browser and head to Kickstarter for more info on Ototo. A pledge of at least £45 (~$73 USD) gets you an Ototo board.

Red LG Nexus 5 Lands for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is almost here and as such, there is no shortage of red stuff on the market. Red versions of gadgets like smartphones can make great gifts. Just be sure you or the person you are gifting can live with red on a daily basis.

Case in point: Google and LG have announced a new red version of the Nexus 5 that launched late last year.

red nexus 5 620x620magnify

Other than being bright red on the outside, the device has the same features as the earlier model. That means the phone runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and rocks a full HD 5-inch screen. Power comes from a 2300 mAh battery and the smartphone is just 8.59mm thick.

It runs Android 4.4 KitKat, which is the latest OS version available. With the red version in the mix, the phone now comes in three colors including red, black, and white. You can order the Nexus 5 in any of its colors for $349(USD) for the 16GB model or $399 for the 32GB.

Tango Portable Computer: Your Laptop’s Guts Squished Flat

Here’s another computer looking for a dumb terminal to mate with. Like the ICE xPC, Tango crams in the main components of a computer into a palm-sized case. It also uses a dock to connect to an HDMI display and other peripherals.

tango pc portable computer 620x383magnify

Tango has a 2GHz quad-core AMD A6-5200 CPU with an integrated Radeon HD 8400 GPU. It can have between 2GB to 8GB RAM as well as a 32GB to 512GB SSD. Like the ICE xPC, Tango can be loaded with pretty much any desktop operating system.

tango pc portable computer 2 620x390magnify

Unlike ICE xPC, Tango keeps it simple and only has one dock. That dock has an HDMI port, three USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an Ethernet jack and a Wi-Fi adapter. The dock of course needs to be plugged into an outlet for the whole setup to work.

Pledge at least $349 (USD) on Indiegogo to get a Tango PC and a docking station as a reward; there are also separate pledges for additional docking stations.

I still don’t think that this is the best solution to portable computing on a budget. Yes, it has decent specs and is quite cheap, but it’s clunky and messy. You’ll need multiple docks, keyboards, mice and a whole lot of cables for it to be worth it. Windows 8.1 tablets like the ASUS Transformer Book T100, the Dell Venue 11 Pro and the new ThinkPad 8 are more useful than the Tango, but they also cost more and run only Windows. Chromebooks are cheap and come with a keyboard and screen but they might not have access to the programs you need. I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

Arcade Machine Accepts Bitcoins: Bitcoin-op

A growing number of establishments are accepting Bitcoin as payment. Now you can even use it to play arcade games. British company Liberty Games combined the cutting edge currency with the aging gaming platform to make a simple transaction hilariously complicated. The company used a Raspberry Pi and a PiFace add-on to make the payment interface.

bitcoin operated arcade machine by liberty games 620x295magnify

Liberty Games first tried their Bitcoin payment mod on a pool table. After receiving good feedback for that mod, the company decided to apply it on an arcade machine.

The great thing about their method is that it doesn’t mess with the machine’s software, which means it can be performed on pretty much any coin-operated arcade game. Not that you should.
